There used to be one by Glenmore trail by chinook centre. Before chinook centre expanded there was a school there that had a huge stand-alone air raid siren. Too bad it's gone
It is silly, we get storms here every summer that fit the tornado producing profile, and at best when a tornado watch is issued, it is usually a broadcast interuption message...assuming you have your TV on at the time...
The city of Edmonton, and surrounding communities have a siren system on 97th street near the yellowhead highway in edmonton there is an SD 10 and in fort sask they replaced thier mechanical sirens in the early 2000's to alertronics.
I'm sure that there might be some old civil defence air raid sirens gathering dust in a warehouse somewhere left over from the cold war, but not what we need. You're right, it stands to reason that if things are much less predictable now, we'd be outright stupid to not have a system in place. And was it ever an awesome storm!!
Good eye, it is closer to 5:40 but if you blink you'll miss it...somewhere between 5:39 and 5:40 if you look at it closely to the bottom right of the frame you'll see what looks like a huge spark jump up from in front of the camera. If you play around with the slide bar and pause frequently at the right spot you'll see the whole field of view light up. Not sure if it makes sense but I discovered it by accident when I was editing it...let me know if you have any luck seeing it.
Maybe even within the next 5 years...and you're right, we haven't had one yet, but it's only a matter of time. We have had several tornado warnings this past few years, I remember 3 this year, how about you?
Calgary has NEVER had a tornado. Strathmore - just east of the city - yes. But that's well outside the city limits. And that is as close as we've ever seen. Our time however, is coming. Urban sprawl is a major factor, I think the eastern side of Calgary will be hit in the next decade.
Well, Edmonton didn't get theirs until the infamous Black Friday. Our weather warning system is SCARY. The closest "real" Environment Canada weather office is in Winnipeg! The massive storm we had on June 5th of this year - a severe thunderstorm warning was NEVER issued that night by EC! They issued a watch for the city, about 20 minutes after the storm had passed!
Im pretty sure we do have storm sirens. Just in case of anything happening. I mean, we have had 1 tornado, so whats to say not another one? Especially with the global climate change. I remember that storm quite well. Was awesome!
Our weather warning system won't be upgraded until we have our own disaster. The fact that no one was killed on June 5th was luck, given the flooding. The system buckled, pure and simple. As bad as June 5th was, compared to the havoc of a large tornado, it was a non-event. I just hope the tornado warning doesn't come 20 minutes after some of us get blown to Balzac!! (No offense to Balzakians intended!!)
Well, I just hope that someone out there posts a funnel cloud sighted over the city, or even nearby, perhaps that might be a start. No one has to be a meteorologist, just know a few little things about what to look for. Not that you need to live in fear of the bogeyman or anything, but if a little education is good...
Hee hee...Balzakians. If an F3-F5 tornado were to hit Calgary in our current warningless state, the casualties would be enormous. Nobody here seems to know what to do in a tornado, there isn't a warning system even worth mentioning here, and on top of all of this most Calgarians falsely believe that a tornado cannot strike here "because we are too close to the mountains." What they don't know is that so far we've merely been lucky.

Thanks!!
It's actually a couple of fire trucks that just happened to be driving by, no doubt the storm caused trouble somewhere that evening...

I quess those severe thunderstorms are a nice change from the cold
damn that lightning bolt was so close, hehe, i really thought you are going to get struck
We don't have any storm sirens here in Calgary, actually.. silly us.
man-that was close!

basically that particular bolt zapped right over top of me...is what I was trying to point out...
yes that was incredibley unusual.

So did I...
