If you don’t have enough money to buy both the light and strobe. And you do photo/video. Simpler, buy a video light that is more than 10000 lumen and you’ll be fine even for photo. Video light can be used for both the job, strobe only for photo. I did, and it works, ok I can not have the same resolution as a strobe but I definitely can take very nice photo with no issues. And it as Alex said, teaches me how light works underwater.
I switched from strobes to counties light in 2008 when the Nikon D3 was released and I have never looked back :) Like you say, I only shot WA and most of the time in pitch black conditions and there are great benefits with continuous lights then.
Hi, Jessica-I think these videos are not really an ideal venue to discuss specific techniques. While they will inevitably be some overlap, learning to snoot is best carried out in the water with someone who can teach you the practicalities of using one!
On analog I used single strobe S&S for 30 years axed mostly macro. Digital I started with Gopro and immediately started adding Cheap LED lights I NEED LIGHT. These cheap chinese LEDs kicked outr a bit of light and I would mount up to 5 on my rig. It gave me a wall of light. My friends called it Gopro on Steroids. OK these LEDs cost 20 Euros cheap Chines crap. Ina weeks diving holiday two would flood and get thrown away. A gopro is not great at still photography but it taught me video. To get back to some great still photography so I got a TG6, YS strobe and built a new rig. This is a TG6 + Gopro + strobe + 1 or more LEDs. Yes TG6 does good video but the Gopro is filming away in the background while I work on my still shots. The Latest Suptig LEDs are now quite good don't flood easily and only cost 35 Euros. For most stufrf they are better than an expensive dive lamp. Dive lamps are too focussed will give you uneaven exposure and when video wide angle just give you a blob.
Whenever you two use examples, your videos soar in both interest and educational effectiveness. Thanks.
Glad you like them!

I think that strobes would be a better option for most underwater photography

Great feedback
Thank you! Can you guys do a video on how to use a snoot?
