    We don't have Kurt's opinions on these kinds of shows really, but we do have Dave Grohl's. Dave Grohl said that waiting in a room for 8 hours, singing your heart out for two minutes and having someone tell you it's not good enough is ridiculous. He said if you love music, do music as much as you can, and forever and ever.

    Is this show about musical talent or analyzing someone's character?
    There's absolutely no reason to compare him with Cobain, he tried to show his talent, not to imitate Cobain's personality.
    I didn't see him do that with Brian Crum when he covered Radiohead, and Radiohead are not exactly conformists either.
    He just gave his personal opinion on the guy's character and his unlucky choice of music.
    Totally unprofessional.

      Berak Celana His point is that rockers, all rockers should be against the idea of becoming sellouts, which has nothing to do with this show, and is a naive idea to begin with.
      Most rockers want to become stars, Cobain did certainly not enjoy the idea of selling out, but you can't compare these two at all.

  • @myworld1112
    @myworld1112 10 ปีที่แล้ว +119

    I agree with points both Simon and the long-haired contestant said. Simon was right in saying that Kurt would've hated reality talent shows let alone have one of his songs performed on one and also how rock fans would see a 'rock performer' performing on such a show, as selling out. However, the long-haired contestant did make a good point by saying that these reality talent shows have made the industry hard to access for new artists. Particularly rock artists, as it is more difficult to find another, less manufactured and conforming way into the industry because talent shows have taken over that and the charts. Also the white haired guy who said "If that's true, how did we get Kurt Cobain?" can fuck off because the music industry didn't have all the reality talent shows (or not as many as nowadays atleast) in the 90s to get in the way of Nirvana and their awesomeness. The long-haired contestant was right in saying that this music industry was laughing at Kurt, they didn't think Nirvana's genre of music would ever get popular. But now we can laugh at them for being so ignorant. I think the long-haired contestant justified his actions for coming on the show very well even if I do personally think rock shouldn't be on a reality show in general.

    • @IrnBru18
      @IrnBru18 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Back in the day these TV Talent shows traditionally had Pop singers, keep in mind this clip was recorded back in 2003...since then these shows have spawned MANY Rock singers.
      Just look at the rock singers that have came from American Idol...Adam Lambert, David Cook, Chris Daughtry, Bo Bice, Lee DeWyze, Kelly Clarkson (2005/06 rock chick era) Crystal Bowersox etc. There is definetly a place for rock singers on these shows.
      Simon was just challenging the traditional values of being a "rock singer", that they should stay-true-to-their-roots and not sell out. He was just speaking on behalf of the rock community who may have criticised Peter Evrard's appearance on World Idol.
      But Peter Evrard finished 3RD PLACE out of the 11 contestants that took part on this show.

    This is an interesting reaction from Simon Cowell. He must know that the music industry today, which he has helped create, is itself Kurt Cobain's worst nightmare. But he expresses distaste when someone tries to drag real music into his reality TV nonsense. It's like he's saying yeah I've sold out, but keep Nirvana and the real music away from all this, keep them sacred. That shows a degree of integrity which I sort of respect.

      He does hate the song though, because his rhetorics benefit to whoever rips the profit off Nirvana record sales at the time, trying to sustain that divine, infallible aura around everything that Nirvana ever did, so that the demand on the music market could only be satisfied with what these right owners decide to supply the listeners/buyers with. Which in a sense constitutes an absolutely opposite point from what this song is about -- carrying on and sharing your 'inner fire', a drive to live and create with anyone who gets this kind of sickly yet powerful feeling.

    I %100 agree with the singer, anyone who's been a musician seeking to make a living off music for any measure of time knows that you have to take opportunities that are presented and that you need exposure. Simon does make a point and I'm not too certain that Kurt would "love" this but I've spent a lot of time listening to his music and listening to him talk and I don't exactly see how this is conforming for one, and plus I think Kurt would've been kind of happy that someone came on that show and sang something other than smells like teen spirit. people are forgetting that there weren't really many shows like this in Kurt's day and there's still a live possibility that Kurt might've gone on one with the band to get exposure or chase his dream,there's nothing wrong with chasing a dream and doing what you can to further it,as long as its not selling out and that's not what this is at all.

      +kicsimoe the whole point of Nirvana was saying "fuck you" to the industry and changing a culture. A poser like this guy going on a talent show to sing nirvana is contrary to the whole point of the genre. Nirvana was an independent band out of Seattle that exploded after "Nevermind" was released because they tapped into something that a lot of people liked. Simon is simply saying that by covering Nirvana you are going against everything the culture stands for, and he is completely right. A counter-culture genre on music like this should very rarely be sung on a talent show because it's quite contradictory to its intention.

      @ChrisPBacon-mt3ph 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Your talking about Kurt as an individual and I'm talking about the perception the band had and what people that listened to the genre felt. Of course Kurt wasn't perfect. He was full of contradictions and he was a druggie. Still it's important to note that they were an independent band until "Nevermind" dropped and they became mainstream in the sense that they were popular, but the band's perception was the exact opposite. They literally started with very little and became superstars overnight.
      In Utero was arguably less "mainstream" sounding than Nevermind to many people. Nirvana is a pretty terrible choice to sing on a singing show like this for 2 reasons. 1) Many fans of grunge and early alt. rock will see you as a poser for singing this a talent show. and 2) The way Cobain sings his songs does not translate well for what the judges are looking for on a show like this. Not saying his voice is bad, but it looks awkward. It simply doesn't work, and I wish people would stop.

      +kicsimoe Agreed; I'm a big Nirvana fan, but a lot of the fanbase is delusional and refuses to accept that Kurt contradicted himself often and acted like a hypocrite at times during his short life. That isn't meant to discredit him in any way, but he was human and flawed just like everyone else. The hero worship is a bit disconcerting and something he ironically was never comfortable with although he worked hard to get that kind of notoriety and attention.

At least Simon can admit that this industry is a joke and artists like Kurt despised things like this. Music loses its purity when you have to perform through to judges to decide whether or not you are accepted or successful. Fuck that. Any Nirvana or grunge fan watched this cringing. Singing nirvana on this show is an oxymoron. Don't expect to make it anywhere when you cannot even respect or understand where the music came from.

Music used to be art. Now it’s a consumer’s product to use up and throw out when done. Of course rockers will think this guy sold out. The show itself is basically selling out. Simon acts as if a truly genuine person would actually take their skill to a place like American Idol. Maybe a dumb one who just wants to be famous. Those dumb ones are easier to manipulate

      You're bringing Grohl into this? He's been misusing his status as the 'drummer for Nirvana' to harvest his own success since the beginning. If not for that, he would never be as famous. Secondly, did you watch the funeral service of Lemmy? Dave didn't even know him, yet he talked for several minutes (even bringing up the fake tears) until the point that time ran out and the broadcast ended. Normally Ozzy was scheduled to say some words to one of his oldest and best rock friends who just passed away, yet he was uanble to because of Grohl's ranting. It had 'acte de présence' written all over it. Never liked Grohl and never will. Simon has never known what rock and roll is about and has no authorisation to judge Peter, who knows how hard it is to get somewhere with rock or metal music in Belgium. The industry HAS made it this way

    Simon is actually right. He wouldn't be accepted by the modern rock community because he has conformed to the manufactured industry. If you look at all the biggest rock bands of the past 25 years they have all been punk, metal, and indie bands that are true to their roots, e.g. Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Oasis, Green Day, Foo Fighters, The White Stripes, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys etc.

      +USCFlash I'm a huge nirvana fan and I'll be the first to say they didn't stay true to their roots. Instance nevermind album. Huge deal but was too pop for Kurt. If they woulda all stayed true to their roots they would be playing small shows and bars and not selling lots of albums and working for huge corporations. And nirvana woulda had another album like bleach or in utero

    • @USCFlash
      @USCFlash 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Daniel Malone
      1. I never mentioned Nirvana, I simply pointed out that Pearl Jam, Foo and Oasis, are not punk, metal or indie.
      2. That said, if Nevermind was "too pop" just because it was very produced, then Kurt should not have done it.
      But frankly, just because a couple of songs were very produced and had a heavy rock sheen to them, does not constitute it as merely pop or lesser songs.
      There are plenty of non "pop" songs on Nevermind.
      Polly
      Endless Nameless
      Territorial Pissings
      Something in the Way
      Breed
      are not pop.
      And songs like
      Drain You, Lithium, Come as you Are and In Bloom, are still very heavy rock songs, that while slickly produced, are heavier than many early Nirvana songs from Bleach era, and previously recordings made before Nevermind.
      And Bleach had "About a Girl" on it, which is as pop as it gets, but still a great song.
      And I like Bleach but the fact is, a lot of the songs on Nevermind, are in fact, far better songs, musically, than Bleach. They show a maturing songwriter.
      School, Negative Creep, Floyd the Barber, are all great songs...
      But are the rest of the songs on Bleach "better" than Breed? Polly? Something in the Way? Or the big hits on Nevermind?
      I feel about SLTS the way I feel about Stairway to Heaven, since Zeppelin is my all time favorite band, with The Beatles and Nirvana 2 & 3 behind them.
      I dont listen to SLTS or Stairway, because they have been overplayed....they are still great, but i might only listen to them once every two years.
      I listen to Polly and Something in the Way, and several In Utero tunes far more than SLTS.
      3. "If they woulda all stayed true to their roots"
      Since all the "pop" songs on Nevermind were written long before the release of Nevermind, all the songs, were in fact, written during their roots.
      just because they were then slickly produced wold not have changed anything.
      Be honest, put on Nevermind tonight (or tomorrow)
      and listen to SLTS, Lithium, Drain You, Come as You are, and In Bloom.....and then imagine if they had been produced with the same style as some of the great tunes on Bleach.
      There would have been very little appreciable difference in how catchy those 5 tunes were. There might have been more fuzz, feedback and abrasion, but the melodies were absolutely there and they would have still hit it big....but maybe not "as big" it might have sold 20 million instead of 30 million.
      4 "If they woulda all stayed true to their roots they would be playing small shows and bars and not selling lots of albums and working for huge corporations"
      That is not fair....what if you stay true to your roots, and people love that, and more people come to your shows and buy your albums? being more popular does not mean you have been disloyal to your roots.
      You do not have to play small shows and not sell a lot of albums to be true and honest.
      5. If you retain creative control, and make the music you want, then working for huge labels, is not betraying your roots.
      In Utero and Unplugged are examples of that....coming after Nevermind
      6. "And nirvana woulda had another album like bleach or in utero"
      They would not have had another album like In Utero, because Kurt would not have gone through the same fame issues he went through during writing most of the In Utero material. Things would be completely different...teh enxt studio album, may have been the "pop/sellout" album.
      And if they had another album like Bleach, instead of Nevermind, they would not be going anywhere, because they would not have been evolving as a band, or Kurt as a songwriter.
      7. That said, Nirvana did remain "true to their roots" since really, they were never a "punk band". Some people like to call Nirvana a "rock influenced punk band"....no way, imo they were a "punk influenced rock band" and always were. Kurts influences were always in the earliest roots of rock, from the Beatles, to Leadbelly, Zeppelin, etc...he was introduced to punk long after he was introduced to punk, and though he loved the punk aesthetic, definitely, and was hugely influenced by it, he added punk to his already rock repertoire and leanings. Melody is not the base of punk, in the same way it was the base of the Beatles, and Kurt's mastery was melody.
      That was his genius, i believe, from his natural talent as well as the Beatles influence, since the Beatles are arguably the greatest ever rock band when it comes to learning pure melody.
      As such, he did stay true to his roots, even if it meant signing with a big record company. The vast majority of the songs for Nevermind, were written long *before* they signed with DGR....it was that demo tape, originally, that got the interest of the major labels.
      Sorry for the numbering, i like to keep things straight in discussions.
      These are only my opinions, of course.

    • @USCFlash
      @USCFlash 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Malone
      no probs, it did seem odd when you were talking about something i did not say :)
      and i agree with on what kurt said, but i also believe that kurt was a great at embellishing, and you know he really liked stuff like polly, something in the way, territorial pissings, etc....and breed, drain you and lithium as well....he might have ultimately not liked the sheen that he himself chose to put on, but i believe he really did like nevermind, just not all teh acclaim and new audience it brought him.
      and yes he had a masterful ability with melody...which is what i think he knew and did secretly like even if he felt it dimished his cred....it's what everybody said though, Dave, Krist, even Courtney (blech, we wont go there) they all said the same thing...."he knew he was the shit"
      I think he knew *exactly* what he was doing with nevermind and tried to make it as accessible as possible while still retaining his credibility and most of his idealism....and lets face it, he really was never as idealistic as he pretended to be....he had integrity, but he knew he alwso wanted certain things, that came only with success, and he has a right to earn a great living and be popular, imo, all artists do, if they are honest.
      That said, not a week goes by when i am not listening to at least 20 different Nirvana songs....they were a big part of my life in 91-94 and remained so till this day, as it sounds like for you as well

Infact this is his most famous quote "Doesn't matter if it sounds good only if you're passionate about it." Kurt cobain. He came on stage and song and he tried and it sounded good he was passionate so how dare you say this isn't what he would have wanted.

    the guy has talent, and it's a shame that he's obviously trying to be like Kurt, I mean he has the whole uncut shaggy look, by going straight on tv and having other celebrities tell him weather he's good enough or not. Nirvana were just three high-school rejects from rainy Seattle: depressed white teens with a dream, they started off by working hard in the underground industry, then they attracted other depressed white teens who could totally relate to them and they blew up. because of their rebellious, energetic and ORIGINAL vibes. Dave himself already expressed his hatred for talent shows like this, because unless you're under great circumstances like One Direction and/or Leona Lewis the farthest you will ever get is one hit straight after you're win and then before you know it you're no longer the obsession. Besides, while we're being real here, a guy like this would never win a modern talent show, they're looking for freshly cut late teen kids who have their whole lives ahead of them.

    Simon is so cocky and arrogant that he thinks he can talk in the name of the rock n roll community, and at the same time he represents the pop music industry himself.

    • @mauricio14junior
      @mauricio14junior 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** Because he expected to be judged by his singing and performing talents, not by his ideology? Like everyone else?

    • @mauricio14junior
      @mauricio14junior 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Disagree. I like and sing Nirvana songs and I'm not part of Kurt's ideology necessarily. Kurt might not have signed for something like this, but dude! He signed for MTV show, which is pretty much as mainstream as this.

    • @mauricio14junior
      @mauricio14junior 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** Simon focused his criticism on ideology, which I don't really think that is relevant for a pop show judgement, and, yes, he also talked about originality. I see as hypocrisy the "originality" card coming from Simon once I've seen he applauding much more unoriginal candidates in other auditions. I think he was super unfair with the guy. I mean, he could just have said "I didn't like", but why humiliate the guy? I've seen him being an asshole many times, including this one.

    Here's my problem with this... Cowell is telling this guy to get famous and become recognized by doing something similar to Kurt (which took years and must have been very hard) just because he's doing a different fucking genre other than pop? That's almost impossible nowadays. He lets everyone doing pop music compete on his show. Why not rock n' roll? Simon cowell is the one that helped create all these shitty boybands and new artists which have no meaning behind their songs and sing about the same topics repetitively. This dude seems like he has talent, so what the hell is cowell's problem now?

    any genre of alternative music (rock, metal etc) is not played for the recognition. It is played for the love of music. It's a way of life for the person. Simon Cowel may be an arse sometimes but he knows enough about rock music to understand this. That guy was just an idot poser who knows nothing about the music he's performing.
