If you had been a cowboy, you would not have had a Model 1892 chambered in .45 Colt. 😉 Or 300 gr. Hornady XTP bullets!
The reason was that the original .45 Colt cartridge had a very small rim and no extractor groove. There wasn't enough rim for the lever gun extractor to grab, (not a problem in the rod ejecting Colt revolver) add in the fouling of black powder, still in common use in the 1890s, and it simply was not a reliable combination. Neither was it chambered in the earlier Model 1873. Even Colt didn't chamber it in their "Lighting" slide action rifle. Remington avoided it in their Model 14-1/2 slide action.
The slightly bottlenecked .44-40 also offered better feeding in the lever and slide action guns, particularly in a fouled chamber. Again, something that is not an issue in Colt Single Action revolvers.
Some changes were made to the .45 Colt over the years. For a short time the US Military used the large Colt "New Service" revolver as a substitute standard and they used a special loading designated ".45 Model of 1909" which had a slightly larger rim to work with the Colt's star extractor, but these rounds would not fit in a Colt Single action as the rims were too large to be loaded in adjacent chambers. These loads were generally not offered commercially. After WW2, the bullet diameter was reduced from the original .454" to .452", to standardize the .45 bore diameter and the base size of the case was reduced .002" which resulted in a larger "rim". The brass case head was reinforced and the current .45 Colt cases have less internal capacity than old black powder cases (originally copper and inside primed) so an extractor groove could be cut. These changes made the .45 Colt a viable cartridge in repeating firearms like the Winchester rifles and copies of the Colt Lighting, now also made in .45 Colt.
This is great for lever guns and also revolvers with star extraction, like the S&W Model 25. Smokeless powder took care of the fouling problems (in the 1890s, many people weren't sure smokeless powder was here to stay) and now you can enjoy that rifle and that cartridge. .
The Model 1892 itself is a great design and fun rifle to shoot. I think it is the easiest and fastest of the Winchesters to operate. I am with you on not trying to make the .45 Colt into a .44 Magnum. .44 Magnum is an option in these same rifles, so there is no need to try and make something else into it.
Thanks for covering another really great rifle!

Your's is a great comment filled with all kinds of historical info that I didn't cover in the vid so I have pinned it to the top of the comment column for all to see. Thanks! Btw, even after the changes to the case rim, the modern 45 Colt rim only overhangs about .016" compared to .028" with the 44 Magnum. Thanks Gary!

@@christopherjackson3455 It's my understanding that Special meant bout the same thing as magnum, before magnum term came into use.

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@christopherjackson3455 I don't agonize over decisions. I buy them all. Well, to be honest, I do not own any .45 Colt rifles, though I do own two .45 Colt chambered handguns (both of them made by S&W) and several .44 Magnum handguns and a .44 Magnum lever gun. I support your right to choose the .45 Colt in a rifle. My usual explanation for why I choose to buy a gun runs more along the lines of "'Because I want it" I'm just like that.
Elmer Keith's experiments, which led to the .44 Magnum, began with the .45 Colt but after he blew up a revolver in 1945, he decided it would be better to work with the .44 Special since it's smaller diameter gave it increased chamber wall thickness in revolvers.
I never heard the story about Mrs. Colt and the .45 Colt. Interesting.
Why do you suppose the COLT company didn't chamber the .45 Colt in the COLT Lightning slide action rifle? Odd. She held a controlling interest in the Colt Company at the time. The rifle was made in 3 frame sizes for 8 different cartridges, none of them bore the "Colt" name. But it was made in 6 Winchester cartridges. Weird!
The makers of the replica Colt Lightning rifle, made after the changes to the .45 Colt bullet diameter and case dimensions, did chamber the .45 Colt.
Colt also chambered their revolvers (both DA and SA) for .32 WCF and 38 WCF cartridges. Sounds like Mrs. Colt was pretty selfish.
I doubt she prevented Remington from chambering it in the Model 14-1/2. Mrs. Colt sold her interest in Colt in 1901 and died in 1905. The Remington rifle was made from 1912 to 1934. It was chambered in .32, .38 and .44 WCF but not .45 Colt.
I'll stick with the dimensional/mechanical explanation.
A point of confusion may be that in 1884, after the death of both Oliver Winchester and Samuel Colt, when Mrs. Winchester was Treasurer of Winchester, and Mrs. Colt held the controlling interest in Colt's, the Winchester and Colt Companies came to a "gentlemen's" (Ladies?) agreement that Colt would not make LEVER action rifles and Winchester would not make revolvers. This came about after Colt's venture into lever guns with the Colt Burgess lever action in 1883. Winchester quickly followed with a prototype revolver called the "Rivivaler". The revolver, designed by none other than Richard Mason, who had designed some of the patent features of the Colt SAA, and who had left Colt in 1883 to join Winchester. Sounds all incestuous and stuff, doesn't it? The Connecticut river valley was something like Silicon valley (or Peyton Place) in the 1880s.
Colt dropped the rifle in early 1885, allegedly in response to the agreement. The Winchester revolver was never produced commercially.
I never heard of any cartridges being mentioned.

45 Colt is my favorite cartridge. You can load 180 bullets all the way up to 320 grain and any powder charge you want in between. You can make rounds best for pistol and rounds best for a rifle. Plus you can make some kick butt rounds for your rifle.

As a long time "Big, Relatively Slow, Bullets Make Bigger Holes Down Range" advocate, I found this video entertaining AND educational!! NOTE: Modern hunters tend to forget, or never bother to learn, that our ancestors fed themselves, their families....And sometimes whole communities.... With "traditional" Black Powder front loaders in calibers STARTING with a "4" on up to a "7" that produced velocities well under any of the "modern" rounds produced since the mid to late 19th century. I can't think of one good reason why a hunter, even now in 21st century, not being able to do the same with a '92 Winchester chambered in .45 Colt's like the one featured in this video as long as the hunter does his or her job at the trigger end of things. Excellent video as usual!

Another entertaining video George! You hit the 45 "long colt" info right on the head. 45 Colt is also one of my favorite cowboy cartridges to reload for just due to its versatility. I have also tinkered with hot loads with the 300 gr xtp's and H110. No it wont make my vaqueros as powerful as my model 29, but boy I still hope I'm never on the receiving end ha! As much as I love 45 colt and 44 mag, I think I would have to buy an 1892 in 44-40 just for originality. Maybe with a large loop lever to make Mr. McCain proud lol

45 Colt is my favorite cartridge. Have been loading and shooting them for many years. I've owned an old model 45 Colt Vaquero for a long time. Just last year I bought a stainless Rossi 92 to go with it. I cast with a 250 gr RNFP mold but my bullets weigh about 264 gr. I do a mild load of 9.0 gr of Unique. Accurate and fun to shoot. Haven't chronoed the Ruger but the Rossi with these loads is running around 1165 fps. Plenty for any Alabama critter I may run into.

Hi George, I sure enjoyed the history of the 45colt. And you are spot on about 45long colt and being also called just 45colt because of the Schofield could not except the 45long colt in the chamber. The cylinder was shorter in length so the cartridge would stick out and one couldn't close the gun. If I'm right it was called 45 Schofield cartridge. Actually a 45 s&w. Great video! Sugary Sam and the pumpkin patch kid didn't stand a chance!!

Hi Terry. Good to hear from you as always! One article I read said the crates of Military Schofield ammo was marked something like 45 Caliber Pistol. I can't find the article to be sure, but it was this generic labeling that reputedly led to the "Long Colt" designation.

Back in 1981 I bought a M1873, .44-40 Uberti built Winchester carbine and had a local Gunsmith put a Douglas .45 caliber barrel with a one in sixteen inch twist on it chambered in .45 Colt. When I got it back from my Gunsmith in 1982, it was a joy to shoot and was the most accurate of all my rifles. I used that rifle in Cowboy Action Shooting since 1984 until I retired it for a M1866 Winchester in .44-40 for a more historically accurate portrayal. I still use the '73 when I do Wild Bunch matches.

Love my Henry 45 colt, I have a few boxes of Buffalo Bore 260gr for people that think I should have gone with the 44 magnum.
Just so you know, that round comes out of that 20 inch barrel at about 1900+ fps, that makes this Henry 45 colt more deadly within 100 yards than a 30-30.

Hi George, thanks for another fine lustration on a fine rifle. I also have the same rifle as your son has. One small obstacle I ran into early on was 260 grain Keith cast bullets would not feed. I can see the action is just a little short for much of anything over the col of 1.600. Fortunately the hdy 250 has a col of just about right at 1.600. I was wondering since you and your son both load your own like I do have run into the same problem with longer bullets. Lol I too like 296/h110 for the heavier loads! Good work sir I appreciate what you’re doing !!

Hi Gary. The 265 grain Montana bullet works bullets work just fine in the 45 Colt 1892. But I have to seat heavier bullets deep in order for them to fit in the chamber of my 44 mag 1892. I've considered getting the throat cut deeper on my 44 magnum so I can load the heavier bullets but just haven't pulled the trigger on that yet

Be interesting to see bullet performance of the 300 grain XTP at those speeds through water jugs and wet paper (which are as good as or slightly faster than 454 casull from a pistol)! They must be made for 454casull or 460S&W mag in mind, so likley thick jacket?
I shoot a powder coated 318 gr GC H/cast bullet w/H110 at 1530fps from my Henry, recoil will wake you up in the morning, but this XTP at simular speed would be very interesting for hunting.

That is a rifle that I would like to come across at a reasonable price. I have always wanted one in the caliber. The .45 Long Colt is an awesome round and like you said you can custom load them to whatever you want to use it for. Guaranteed hunting rifle. You could use it for all kinds of game. Hogs and deer come to mind. My brother in law used a Colt single action army in .45 long colt when he started out in law enforcement. The agency finally made him change his weapon choice when they finally came out with a standard for their sidearms, but he used one in a western style holster for about 3 years. Can you imagine seeing a big guy about 6'4" tall and weighing around 300lbs. getting out of his car in a cop uniform behind you and having a fast draw western holster tied down with a big old Colt 45 in it? I thought it was funny but I know there were a lot of people that got a little fright when they got stopped by him. God rest his soul, a good man gone.

Money was tight when I chose to buy a matching caliber Single Action and Lever Rifle. I bought a 45 Colt EMF Alchemista at an auction for 1/2 price in 9/10 condition. I lost my bids on 44 mag SAA;s. So I started looking at 45 Colt levers, after going to about a dozen places I went to a local Gun Show at the VFW a 15min away. I came home with a Stainless Rossi R92 in 45 Colt. Then ordered Ammo from Freedom Munitions pre covid. I didn't care about the safety the ATF makes all imports have. Or the fact that 45 Colt in levers were not used. For about a grand I have what I wanted with 300 rounds of ammo. Both of my guns are not made here. But neither are Glocks, CZ and a dozen other well loved imports.

Good morning George , I now realize I stated the problem with my rifle wrong. All of those rounds will chamber one at a time when the bolt is all the way back, the problem is when a round comes out of the tube it doesn’t clear the tube far enough for the carrier to bring it up to the chamber. With a fraction of the nose of the bullet still in the chamber the round is stuck! I’ve thought about seating and crimping deeper and reducing the powder charge but that particular bullet I don’t think was designed for that. I’m not sure if the action could be worked on for the bolt to move a little further back or not.
If you have time please give me your thoughts on this . So much fun with so many problems lol
In the meantime I’m going to try the bullets you mentioned from Montana bullet works .
Thanks again George for all your work , you have me and several friends hooked on TH-cam now !

I agree... it ought to be a good combo. The original .44-40 chambering certainly was, and had that cartridge not been later eclipsed by other ".44" offerings, I don't doubt it probably still would be. I've fired a '92 in .44 WCF, and it was a really nice-shooting rifle... hard hitting but pleasant to shoot and quick to handle. And the fact that back in the day you could pair it with a SAA in the same chambering made it a winner. For a long time, it was actually MORE popular than the .45 Colt.

Hi George: I like your 1892 - looks very nice. Do you like 45 LC ammo? I also like the octagonal barrel. Does it give you more kick than a 30-30? I'm still very confused on the colt & long colt controversy. I know it's the same but why was it called long colt? May be it just means the cowboy is loading them into the rifle rather than the six gun ??

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Louis Yong I like the 45 Colt cartridge. It is very versatile and doesn't recoil (kick) as bad as the 30-30. As far as the long Colt designation, that goes back to the 1870s when the US Army had two 45 caliber revolvers, the 1873 Colt Single Action Army which shot the .45 Colt cartridge and the Schoefield which shot the 45 Smith and Wesson cartridge. Both were .45 Caliber cartridges. But the .45 S&W round was shorter and the .45 Colt. My understanding is that the US military came up with the designation Long Colt and marked crates of ammo with "45 Long Colt" to avoid shipping the wrong ammunition to units that used the Schoefield revolver.

What calibers were available back in the day in pistol and lever?

Hi Jimmie. No it will not work because the ACP round is rimmless. So there is nothing to keep those rounds from sliding further down in the chamber.

In that platform, the 45 Colt can safely be loaded to magnum pressures. Probably could best a 44 Mag in stopping power.

Given how strong these lever actions rifles are, I wonder why nobody is making them in 454 Casull, I'd get one. I believe Rossi had very limited productions of the model 92 in 454 Casull, the only other one is the Bighorn Armory in Wyoming but that's not something most people can afford.

Doesn't the Model 1892 have problems with some of the heavier-longer bullets used in 45 Colt? My question relates specifically to bear loads. I believe the 1894 action, however, allows their use? Would love to know on this subject!

    • @TargetSuite

Hi Tom. It's all about twist rate. Bullets that spin faster stabilize better than bullets that spin slow. The twist rate on the Winchester Miroku 1892 rifles in 45 Colt and 44 Magnum is 1:26". That's a lot faster than the Marlin 1894 which has a twist rate of 1: 38". So the Winchester is much better at stabilizing the longer heavier bullets than the Marlin.

I understand now and yes, I could chamber the 300gr. bullets in my (now traded) 1894, but not in the 1892. I have been considering getting the 1892 re-throated but just not sure yet.

As a member of SASS, I can tell you that having rifle and handguns shooting the same calibers have an advantage, as in all three guns shooting your one load that is safe for the handguns at the range distances used in a typical SASS match, which is 25-50 yards.
But back in the day when everything was loaded in Black Powder the firearm industry knew the lever action rifles need to step up to the plate and be able to put game on the table from a distance of up to 200 yards. The 45 Colt with its rainbow arch sending the 250 grain bullet at that distance was not powerful enough for the task. So the cartridge of choice since 1873 had been the 44/40, with its 200 grain bullet being driven down range through a 18-24 inch barreled rifle with enough punch to take animals as large as a deer at 200 yards and was also loaded in the Colt Peace Maker since that same year.
The US Calvary used the 45 Caliber because the heavier bullet out of a handgun could take care most targets a Calvary would encounter at ranges of 50 yards or less. Anything further away you used your carbine. Those carbines fired cartridges that used powder charges with 60 or more grains of powder with bullets weighing 300 grains or more so they could be effective out to 800 yards or further if needed.

@@TargetSuite May I suggest you contact SASS website. Look for a big match, perhaps a regional match that is held yearly, rather then a local group that meets monthly where their maybe 20 competitors. At a regional match you might see several hundred competitors over the course of 3-5 days. The Big Regional is End of Trail, and it is held near SASS headquarters in New Mexico.
Ask Someone for a copy of the Current SASS rules book. So you can see the different categories for which a competitor can compete in. Then look at the dress code of conduct. Every shooter is expected to dress accordingly to there aliases, and so if your a bank robber then you dress the part. The period is from the civil war to the year 1898. Most matches are geared around a competitive shoot using single action revolver of the period, lever action rifles shooting pistol calibers and a shotgun of 20 gauge or larger. Either black powder or smokeless. Of course if your shooting smokeless powder your pistol cartridges are traveling less then 1000 FPS in a handgun and 1600 FPS through the rifle. Firing magnum caliber cartridges is allowed as long as you shoot a loading that is not a magnum. Lead Bullets only, absolutely no plated or jacket Bullets and shotguns are also loaded with lead pellets. A typical shooter using traditional cartridges will keep velocities at about 750-800 FPS through the handguns and 1200-1400 through rifles shooting pistol cartridges. It’s a lot of fun, and you can tell how those who don’t take there wardrobe seriously will be pointed towards the front door until they can get with the program and dress properly, next time. These matches are a family event, so you will see plenty of women and children who are old enough competitors competing.

People started using the term '45 Long Colt" after the 45 ACP round came out after 1911 to differentiate between the two 45 Colt rounds. The Schofield round had nothing to do with it.
