      Ray, here's a good helpful tip so that you have better control over your flexible ratchet extension: Take
      a piece of heatshrink tubing that is just a little bit larger than the flex extension if not two pieces of
      the same length that you need to cut it. Place the first piece and slide it over the joint and the whole
      length of the total joint and shrink it down ever so slightly but not to the point of totally seizing it up.
      Take the second length of heat shrink tubing slide it over top of the first one and once again, shrink
      it down, ever so slightly. This way the flex joint is still somewhat flexible and not all floppy all over
      the place. This way, you won't be struggling with the wasted flex joint trying to keep it on the bolt
      head!! OR, you probably could get some clear silicone tubing to do the same thing or even better!!
      With the silicone tubing, you just won't be heating it up. OR maybe even vinyl tubing for that matter!!

      Both vinyl and silicone tubing may be found in places like Lowes or Home Depot if they have the
      right sizes. Check online first before making a wasted trip.

      Not trying to be a keyboard commando but just trying to provide some feedback. I feel like your videos lately are too lengthy and way too many parts. The last video was fighting the exhaust and this video was pulling the trans. In the old shop I felt like the videos were to the point and the job was completed by the end of the video, rarely a multi-part unless it was something like that Jag sunroof. Just a little difficult to stay engaged lately. Still great content and I appreciate the effort that goes into it.

    Try Loctite 8040 freeze/release, works brilliantly. Expensive stuff but easy use. If you wanted and have access to one a plumbers pipe freezing kit will do the same.

    I've said it bofore and I say it again, somewhere in a parallel universe Rainman Ray is a brain surgeon. How you can get the socket on an extension waaaay up there on a nut you can't see, with a camera, lights and running monologue, is beyond the ordinary man's ken. Kudos once again, love you channel and your work. Hop you'll consider moving to Michigan sometime soon. I'll be your first cusomer.

    I lost a freezeplug on the back of a sb Chevy. Pull the motortrans out , separate, remove clutch, remove flywheel, remove freezeplug! Re assemble! All for a. 75 cent part! Fun,fun!

    I worked in a transmission shop you need a 1/2 drive extra long extension with a 3/4 drive end for sockets.

    Just a suggestion Ray ....place a retaining device on the converter such as a strap or bolt strip on the converter before wiggling/ tilting the transmission around as they can pop off at anytime especially when placing your hands near them ....gravity you know 😉!

    I did the same job on my Escalade ESV several years ago. The truck was on jackstands but I was lucky to have the exhaust come right off. It took me almost 3 days by myself but it stopped the massive oil leak. I used massive amounts of anti-seize on the exhaust bolts, etc..

    I’m the backyard mechanic guy that does starters radiators water pumps alternators brakes etc. on my own vehicles and in the old days before all the computer controlled systems I’m talking points lol I did more in-depth work but not much. But this is why I wouldn’t even touch something like this lol that’s when you need a man like Ray. I don’t have the patience to try to deal with all that but Ray gets it done, he’s amazing.

    I never had the skill nor the slim hands to get the top bolt without first removing the crossmember and lowering the transmission a little. You are the man.

      Would have taken 5 mins to pull the transfer case at this point and been a whole lot easier to get top bolts and get trans out.

    Removing exhaust nuts. Heat to red hot then spray with water, use a 6 sided socket & non-ratchet bar, strike with hammer if possible. As seen on 'Watch Wes Work' , he is the best at working on rusted old vehicles.

    Part three of the Avalanche is on the horizon. Ray you have it made with the lift & transmission jack, our son didn’t have those when he replaced the automatic transmission in his 2002 F350 CC dually 4x4, he did have a friend who had a transmission jack that was like a floor jack.     Whatever happened to the good old days where you could change a rear main seal on a SBC without removing the transmission, in about 5 minutes. Technology rocks!

      This was designed with the service departments bottom line in mind.
      I mean dealerships have to make money, so why not buckets of money.
      Back in the day when gas cost .27 cents a gallon you could have this fixed for 50 bucks max. The part cost .75 cents.

    What a PITA trans to pull...they could have at least made some kind of notch or joggle in the crossmember to accomodate the removal as 1 unit.

    What a PITA of a job .You need a medical full face shield for the oil spatter.Back in my day I could pull/replace two auto trannys but they were on Aus GM vehicles that were simple 4 speeds I f I owned that thing I would put some gasket repair solution in it & flip it.

    i have a question why not just replace the oil pan gasket at the same time since you will need to reseal it anyways??
    this would also guarantee that all the seals are fixed

    I realize I'm not there to see it live, but that rear main seal looked very dry to me....... I'm thinking the oil filter adaptor is most likely the cause, the oil gets blown back toward the transmission.

      Wait until you strike one with the old rope style rear main seal. Then you'll know what a lot of work for a small leak is all about 😆

    If you pull the transfer case off first it saves you so much work in the long run. Takes 15 mins but saves a lot more in time and frustrations.

    Work at a chevy dealer as an apprentice, always cool to see you work on things I see daily. Never seen someone pull the trans on one of these without removing the transfer case😂 Adding that to the notepad for sure lmaoo

    I always just grab end of transmission and wiggle it side to side and up and down...pops right loose every time quick and easy no prying needed.

    I need to do the same job on my Silverado 1500. I kept putting it off, but now the transmission went out so it needs pulled anyway, I guess my procrastination saved me from doing it twice 😅

      Recently, I had a bugger of a time trying to find a shop that would replace my valve seals on my old GMC pick up . The engine is basic and not complex ..it's a tricky job but most shops just don't have the experience or skill set to do it ..thank god I found a shop in San Jose that had a break in their work and didn't want to gouge my wallet like so many other places will do

    Had the enjoyment of doing this in my driveway, vehicle on ramps on blocks of wood. No longer work on vehicles, but I sure could use a lift for when I repair my own.

    I need to do the same thing to my 05 Dakota here soon. It's got a good little leak in it. I'll have to get someone good like you Ray to get the job done right.     Your use of Milwaukee, ratchets and drivers has inspired me to purchase my own set of M 18’s and associated impact rated pits and sockets. I could never justify the cost of a snap on product, even with the warranty.

    Some food for thought Ray, when I pull a tranny and the converter is left in, I put a strap or some such across the converter just to make sure it doesn’t try to jump out onto the floor and run away! Just some “makes me feel good insurance”. Darn things can be sneaky 😏

      Actually, we had air tools in the early 60s when I worked on VWs. It did mean you had to drag an air hose around though. One of my favorite tools was the 3/8" butterfly air wrench.

    Forget about crappy engineering and super difficult access, it's the little things like dipsticks hanging up and falling back into the hole 3x in a row that drive you slowly insane. My anxiety level hit like 6.8 watching that.

    Ray removing the trans and transfer case at one time is a job in itself. As much as I enjoy your videos and your great mechanical skills I have to disagree with this one. Looks like the oil pan gasket and oil cooler line gasket might be the cause of the leak. The oil pressure sensor on the back of the block behind the valley pan might be some of the culprit also. ✌🏻

    i just pulled the transmission on my samurai this weekend. 4 bolts hold that thing to the engine and then bench press it out!

    Watching you get the top bolt out reminded me of a job i did on my c class Mercedes, the started motor needed changing, i did this in my drive as i did not have the luxury of a car lift, so i did this on a cardboard box. I rembered it as i had to use about 5 extension bars to the length of about 4ft over the top of the gearbox etc, not a job i enjoyed and it took about 3 hours, but the price i was quoted on top of the cost of the refurbed starter it was well worth the struggle and bad back for a few days.

    Fun fact: If you look close there is a small step on the flywheel pilot diameter of the crankshaft. The purpose of the step is to help minimize engine unbalance by keeping the flywheel-asm (manual style more important auto) centered on the crankshaft axis. The fit is actually called a "transition fit" due to part tolerances. The flywheel to crank interface can be 0.001" loose to 0.003" interference depending on the interface diameters on the actual flywheel-asm and crankshaft.

    Nice interesting episode.
    Second episode as a new sub for me.
    He could, with some additional training be a darn good aircraft mechanic.
    I should know as that was my job for almost 5 years as a Coast Guard Aviation Machinist Mate 3d class.
    Good work habits.
    Pays close attention to what he's doing.
    The oil in the face thing can happen no matter what engine repair you do.
    I had it happen on both a Jug change on a Pratt and Whitney R1820 radial seaplane engine and on a Sikorski HH52A Seaguard amphibious helo GE t58 turboshaft engine.
    The radial because the oil feed line hadn't been purged per manual by the person who began the engine removal the day before.
    Being low man on that days crew first engine swap and being skinny then I had the pleasure of snaking some wanna cuss like a 20 year CPO bolts.
    Last bolt came out kaplow, a face full of lovely black oil with a not to pleasent small.
    I loved being a Flight Mechanic on the 'Ol Goat.
    The smell of AvGas and oil burnin' on first burst of smoke as the engine caughed over.
    Loved it my first year and a half before I cross trained on the Sikorski HH52a Seaguard.
    Yuppers, I would have trusted this young man In my duty section.

      Aircraft mechanics make 3 times the hourly rate plus benifits than any other engine mechanic.
      Besides, Coast Guard mechanics help the Coast Guard keep the squids from getting lost :•)
      Did you know over 95% of landing craft in WW II on all theater fronts were manned by Coast Guard personnel.
      The flag that was raised on Mt. Suribachi by those Marine heros came from a Coast Guard manned ship.

    I think that most people call the flex plate a flywheel because of that a lot of people think of the old Ford Flex plate that was basically just thin tin that would break if you lost the pins that were between the transmission and the flex plate. I know that Ford used them on the older Mustangs that had the inline 6 engines but do not know what other cars they used them on.

    One piece main seals last a long time, but when they leak, are a pain to change. Old style two piece seal, especially rope style tended to leak more but only required the oil pan to come off and the main bearing cap to access. The trans stayed.

      That's if you can get the sneaky pete tool to work. Chrysler engines normally require the crank to drop a bit, to be able to feed the top half in.

    Removing the top bell housing nuts was interesting using swivels and extensions. I’ll be fascinated to see how the nuts get back on later.

    This job reminds me of one I did many years ago on a Triumph TR7 where I was straddling the trans from underneath and working it back and forth until it was freed. Here I am embracing it wondering how I'm going to get it and myself away from under the car. I finally figured it out and was so proud of my accomplishment, I brought it inside the house to show my astounded girlfriend what I had done! 🤣

    I remember seeing Chevy had trouble with oil pickup tube o-rings which starve the engine for oil. Would this truck be subject to that problem and would it maybe be a good idea do some preventive service as long as it's in the shop?
