This is sung at the end of one of the saddest though good and so well done movies I have ever seen. a Japanese animated film called "The Grave of the Fireflies" about a brother and sister who survive in war-torn Japan at the end of WWII. It is undoubtedly with political overtones, but honestly it is so beautifully presented that it cannot help but move one deeply and convey a universal message about the price in human terms of war. And this "Home Sweet Home" sung by Galli-Curci at the very end completes that impression. I shall never forget it.
Yes, i had never heard of Amelita Galli Curcci until I saw that movie on TH-cam. At the end of the movie I just had to know who the vocalist was. What a truly amzing voice she has !! And as for the movie - I have watched it about 5 times - so, so sad. And seeing it from a Japanese perspective , even more sad...
@@Johnnyboy88 Wow. 5 times? I watched this movie for the first time last night and cant bare the thought of putting myself through that emotional wreck ever again. Seriously, I couldnt sleep last night.
This marvellous song was also the harp and voice theme-song (sung in Japanese of course) in the legendary director Kon Ichikawa's 1958 powerful and profoundly moving war-protest movie "The Burmese Harp".
Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home; A charm from the skies seems to hallow us there, Which seek thro' the world, is ne'er met elsewhere. Home! Home! Sweet, sweet home! There's no place like home There's no place like home!
The sweetest honey and syrup are not as sweet as her sound. Her phrasing, dynamics and grace notes are those of a thorough musician. O yea I like her singing.
This song is about to enjoy its 200th birthday. This was surely my #1 favourite. A song that dates back to 1823, sung by a wonderful singer in 1917, and people in 2022 are listening to it while bursting into tears.
@117247784684350246407 It was originally issued as a one sided 12 inch 78 RPM record in 1917. If you're looking for it on an LP, I think it was on the RCA Camden album, "The Art of Galli-Curci". The RCA Victor Vocal Series Galli-Curci CD contains an unissued take of the song recorded in 1927. Note: I checked and "The Art of Galli-Curci" LP contains her piano accompanied 1928 electrical recording of the song.
