  • In today's video, I look at the Tone King Imperial MKII plugin from Neural DSP.
    This plugin is a faithful recreation of the fantastic Imperial MK11 Amp from Tone King. This amp sim plugging has changed my mind on how great Amp Sims can be! Top Job Neural DSP.
    Here is what Neural DSP say about the Tone King Imperial MKII Plugin.
    Balancing iconic vintage characteristics and innovation is a paradox very few can reconcile. Tone King is one of the most remarkable examples of this in the world of tube amplifiers. It is packed with gorgeous clean and crunch tones reminiscent of the most iconic era. However, it also comprises unique features like its built-in reactive attenuator - all painstakingly modeled to replicate every sonic nuance.
    This amplifier was designed to delight and inspire, and we are proud to present the Tone King Imperial MKII Suite.
    The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    Theres not a neural DSP plugin that ive played around with that hasnt totally and utterly blown me away ! I cannot believe the quality you can get with a set of monitors and an 80 quid ish plug in ! Certainly beats the rubbish practise amp that was the same price when i was young ! If your a home player you dont even need an amp or pedal board any more to have alot of fun and sound amazing ! But lets be honest we all need both ;)

    I love all the Neural DSP stuff, but their Tone King Imperial plugin is another world of realism. The way it reacts dynamically is so fantastic. The drive is delicious, and the clean is to die for. It's fantastic for when I want a similar sound to my DRRI but everyone is asleep.

  • @JohannesLabusch
    @JohannesLabusch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This plugin has a few very nice features that have noting or little to do with the sound of the amp itself. For instance, it's got a very sensitive tuner, and a kick-ass metronome! You can set its sound to "drum kit", which gives you a bass drum and a closed hi hat. Practicing is much more fun that way. I also really love the stomp boxes, especially the delay and the compressor. Oh, and on top of the "built in" spring reverb, it has a separate reverb "pedal", which gives you those long, epic movie soundtrack reverbs, which in combination with the trem are a slow player's best friend. One more thing: If you experience latency, like I did, reduce the audio buffer size in the settings. It didn't seem to deteriorate the sound at all.

    While I’m waiting for my real Tone King MK2 to come in next weekend. I downloaded this to get me over till then. Wow, sounds really great and gives me ideas. And set points for when I get my real one! I went through a lot new Reissue Fender tube amps…horrible issues and quality build. So spring for the Tone King! I saw this plug-in way after I purchased one. But very cool stuff!
    But anyone looking to really buy one…tel er this plugin has pedals, effects and a master eq. So a real one you may have cool pedals…but it won’t be stereo and there is no master EQ. The master EQ allows the plugin to be a little more high gain metal. The actual amp sounds just as good from medium to hard gain…but the real deal is not something you want to put a plexi style or metal zone through! It has some crisp highs that without a master eq,..like the plugin would just shrill

    Superb tones. These plugins for clean/edge of breakup are getting better and better - and this Imperial MKII sounds awesome. While crunch/heavy tones were always easy to find in many plugins, it was always the clean and break-up tones that severely let the vast majority down - you couldn't use them at the front of a mix, and certainly not on their own. Neural DSP have really excelled here.
    I wonder, have you tried the S-Gear 2 plugin by Shuffham Amps? - how do the cleans/breakups compare?

    Paul - do any of your Katana presets do something similar to the Tone King? I bought your Katana preset bundle a little while ago and I don't recall anything similar (I've had a quick browser through again as well and couldn't find anything). I'd love to be able to get the sound of the Tone King out of the Katana (or at least pretty close) as (i) I'm struggling to justify another +100quid on guitar stuff, and (ii) I don't have studio monitors so I'd always be playing the plug-in through headphones (ok but not my favourite) or via the Katana speaker (which obviously adds a Katana colour to it). Would be really interested in your thoughts if you have a chance. Thanks for all your great work!

My old American Strat from the early 90’s sounds nothing nearly as crisp and crunchy as yours 😕 do you run your guitar through something else before it hits your DAW or are the guitars just that good? To me, the plugin seems to be more compressed than my real Imperial MK II at the same settings....I like the plugin but making me wonder if something is going on with my amp/tubes given the tremendous feedback on line on how authentic this plugin is to the real deal...hmmmm

    What is it with all the compression??? The sounds do not sound real at all. Buy a tube amp and an sm57...I bought this and immediately asked for a refund. Neural DSP will not refund your money...

    I gotta disagree-sorry. From the opening notes, it sounds flat/dull/lifeless. Without dynamic range? I've played plugins before. Overloud THU and Bias FX both sound more engaging and alive than this. This isn't a bad tone. It just isn't as 'lifelike" as one can get from even a mid-level modeler. My two cents....

      Can't make this judgement based on a TH-cam video. My suggestion would be to download the trial, check it out for yourself.
