  • The five (5) Brigades (Bdes) of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) are being presented with their new Colours at the Polo Field, Up Park Camp, Kingston 5. Each Bde will be presented with a Queen’s and a Formation Colour, resulting in a total of ten (10) Colours being presented on the Parade. Each set of Queen’s and Formation Colour is called a Stand. Of note, is that the three existing Stands of Colours in the JDF, those of the First, Second and Third Battalions will be formally retired today. The parade has a total of Five Hundred and Sixty-Three (563) persons.
    COLOURS
A Colour is the official ceremonial flag of a military unit, originally of an infantry unit only. In the infantry of the British army and the armies of other Commonwealth countries, each battalion carries two (2) Colours. The King's/Queen's Colour is usually a version of the country's national flag, trimmed with gold fabric and with the regiment's insignia placed in the centre. The Formation Colour is a flag of a single colour, which is the main colour that represents that Formation. These flags are also trimmed with gold fabric and display the Bde’s insignia in the centre. Colours are a representation of pride, identity and ethos for each Formation.
