- Therese MacGowan joins her son Shane and The Popes for a rendition of ‘Fairytale of New York’. Introducing the performance, Pat Kenny describes ‘Fairytale of New York’ as;
"One of the most beautiful Christmas songs of this past period. It’s absolutely an incredible song."
Originally recorded in 1987 by The Pogues, the song was sung by Kirsty MacColl and Shane MacGowan and featured on the album ‘If I Should Fall from Grace with God’.
Shane MacGowan & The Popes were appearing on ‘The Late Late Show’ fresh from a sold out concert at The Olympia Theatre.
This episode of ‘The Late Late Show’ was broadcast on 15 December 2000. The presenter is Pat Kenny.

His name is Pat Kenny and he wasn't very nice to Shane in another interview (it's on TH-cam, maybe even on this channel). Shane's parents were in the audience and stuck up for him after he was torn apart by Pat Kenny on the same show, but a different year.

Well, now everyone is singing praise to Shane. Back in the days, when he needed support, people and media was mocking and kicking him around for his appearance and drinking.
I absolutely agree. I remember people always talking negatively about him, even going so far as saying what a waste it is having someone like him on this earth. However, the very same people love Fairytale Of New York, calling it the best Christmas song ever and could listen to it over and over. All I can ever think is that this best Christmas song ever that you love so much and makes you happy would never have existed if this person who you say is such a waste having on this earth never existed either. Don't get me wrong, I love Fairytale Of New York too, and I also think it's the best Christmas song, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy from some people.

She was murdered by an untouchable Mexican businessman/millionaire driving his motorboat in a diving zone that boats were forbidden from entering. She saw diving there with her family, the boat was coming straight for one of her sons, she managed to push him to safety but the boat ran her over and killed her instantly. The millionaire blamed it on one of his staff, saying the staff member was driving, even though witnesses saw the millionaire at the wheel. He was never held accountable and the corrupt Mexican government did nothing to prosecute him.
