This video is the truth, despite all the negativity about this trade. I’m a GM Master Tech in a Cadillac dealership in an affluent part of town. I do mostly heavy engine repair and transmission work, and I am around 140-150% efficient. I broke $100k the first week of October this year. One thing missing from this video is that not only do you have to put in work and be efficient, you need the credentials to back it up. You have to be the whole package, and keep grinding it out.

Want to make 100k? GET OUT OF THE BUSINESS!! You won’t be able to sustain that for a lifetime. Being a good tech takes its toll on your mental and physical health in short order. Have a backup plan because after 15-20 years (you’ll only be in your mid 40’s) you won’t be able to keep up with the 25 year olds anymore and and as you slow down, owners notice and will look for a reason to hire younger techs.
Hourly tech here, at my new pay rate I should make about 125K next year and I only work about 35-40hr per week at this point. I work in a shop where each tech is expected to produce 500-700K of annual gross revenue and we don't sell a lot of tires. The best way to get paid well is to do the jobs that other people can't, I constantly get handed jobs that other people and other shops "can't handle", and I don't think I'm doing anything difficult. Don't expect to make great money doing the work that everyone thinks is easy. Invest in yourself and get every certification that is relevant to your career, don't wait for someone else to send you to training, buy your own scopes and scan tools, and invest in specialty tools that make you faster and more efficient than the guys in the bays next to you.
IF you're in a busy shop, and IF your service writers can sell work, and IF you're given all the gravy work, then yes, you can make 100k a year. If you're not in a busy shop, and if your service writers can't sell work, and if you get stuck doing all the $h!t work, then you'll be lucky to make half that.
Consistency is rough at the shop I’m at. Two weeks ago I had 64.8 flag, and then this past week I barely broke 40. It’s not a writer issue, it’s unfortunately an issue of customers approving work. I think that’s currently a consistent trend across the industry with the economic situation.
This has been going on for over 15 years, it's become more affordable for someone to take on a new car payment than it is to fix their current vehicle. We've over-engineered automobiles to the point it's plain stupid, making parts cost extortion money. The auto repair industry is dead, get out.
From a dealership tech. There’s so many VARIABLES to this industry. It’s all a game and you have to be willing to play. Long story short, You gotta get in where you fit in. To the dealer It’s all NUMBERS! Nothing else matters. Anything after that it’s personal to you and how you feel about yourself as a person and as a technician. For one TECHNICIANS LIE (from one extreme to the next), inflate there numbers , what they can and cannot do etc., etc. It’s just like the economy, you have the poor, middle class and the Top 1%. It’s only a Top 1% of technicians that no matter what you give them they can figure it out and actually make money doing it, I’m talking Bumper to Bumper = transmission, engines, electrical you name it. You have to figure out what’s best for you. You can take a Green tech that never touched a car or read a book on mechanics with absolutely no training what so ever, how to properly change oil , mount and balance a tire, reset a service light, do a proper service etc , will TURN 60-70 hrs easily, but can’t figure out why his car doesn’t start (dead battery). Just an example 😂. One of the many Variables in this industry. But then you have the B line tech turn 80 hrs a week but guess what half the cars come back! I say the clock starts over on the comeback ( so do you truly actually turn 80 hrs a week) NO you don’t!! you have to fix your comebacks. Oh wait no you don’t we will get someone else to fix it, keep turning and burning. SO MANY VARIABLES! I can go on and on. Think I’m gonna write a BOOK on this .

I’m leaving a job now that has us top 2 top techs (1%ers and I don’t mean that in a condescending way) doing all the $hit work and 50% of what we do is come backs from the B techs that turn and burn all day and have no idea their car even came back. Just keep feeding the B tech machine while the other 2 A techs put out fires all day. What does that look like when they look at just numbers? B techs, repeat failures guessers, dart boarders…whatever you want to call them look like cash registers when you look at the bottom line every month
Another good point is I’ve seen where crap shops with a bad reputation among techs will offer big money for certified techs because no one familiar with the place wants to work there due to the bad reputation
I hear we've got a local Dodge dealer that's gone through some major ownership/management changes recently offering up to 80 an hour. I'm told it's so awful to work there right now that people last less than 3 months.
@@JMKady76 Before leaving the industry, the dealership I was at would lose a new guy on average every 3 weeks. Not because of the work but because they were trying to pay them $14/hour, that's less than fast food offers.
A few years ago I was making good money because we only had like 5 guys in the shop and I was the only one that liked working on diesels. Now we have 10 guys and the volume hasnt changed and I get less and less of what I was good at. I feel like 50% of my week is LOFR's and recall reprogramming, which was supposed to have been the job of the new guys and not us master techs. We also seem to attract customers that can't afford dealership rates and parts markups - which I don't blame them.
60% being the best diagnostician and be an ace at beating repair times but also 40% management being able to feed you work effectively and not getting in your way...
If you are an A level technician in a major city and not making 100k you need to quit. 100k a year was pretty good in 2018, it's common now. 50+ flat rate is not that difficult to find. 50 x 40 = 2000. 52 weeks in a year. That's over 100k at 40 billed hours a week. Go get your certifications, and ask for what your worth. These shops are charging 170 to 200 an hour labor where I'm located. Add to that the parts mark up and it's very easy to see how not only can these shops afford to pay techs, but absolutely have to pay well if they want good ones. No need to kill yourself trying to bill 60+ a week, just negotiate a pay rate that is fair. Plenty of shops out there still think they can pay someone 35 or 40 bucks an hour. Do not work for those shops. I've met technicians that have a high skill level and have been working at the same shop for 10 or 15 years and they do not realize how badly they are getting ripped off. If you are not earning over 50 bucks flatrate, then the problem is you.

I have no idea about the rest of the country, but I imagine plenty of other places that are not rural pay similiar. I have a friend working for a gm dealership that only does fluids , brakes, and alignments. He makes $31.
100k isn't much in some locations, like California, where almost impossible in other locations. I figured this out after 34 years, I went mobile and only have to turn 21 hours per week to make over 100k. Mix in a few flips and 200k is possible. I only charge 90 an hour and have a service area 10 times bigger than any shop. Overhead is gas and I charge for that so basically no overhead. Good luck
Yeah that is what I have been telling people. I do mobile and work from my garage at home in the evening and weekends. I have a big stack of 20's and 100's from this weekend! I am getting ready to raise my mechanical rates to $95 from $85 because everything I use is getting more expensive. I charge $150 for electrical and module replacements. People are realizing every day that shops are a rip-off.
For what its worth, get into a union. I work for a electrical union as a diesel fleet mechanic working on bucket trucks. Hourly pay. At top tier it’s $125k base. With OT alot of guys making $150k-200k. The industry is a broad horizon with many opportunities.

The biggest hurdel in this industry is the lack of progression with out being self employed i have fought this myself yes i kind of prefer hd diesel but it doesnt mean i cant do auto to. Now that i work for myself im a much happyer person yes im mobile to but t travel accross western ak from kodiak to kotzabue

Go into EPG or any other diesel speciality ….i made over 100k as my first year as an apprentice. Stop playing with cars killing yourself and go apply at your local CAT, Cummins, MTU dealer….you actually do rebuilds and work that made you want to become a technician. Not replacing ball joints on a Honda accord with 300k miles on it
Just be an electrician, easier job, pays a hell of a lot more, electrical wiring has not changed in the last 50 years so a lot less training is required and after your 4 years apprenticeship, you are on 100k plus. Stuff the automotive trade.
I see people talking about making this kind of money and have no idea where they get it or how legitimate their work is. I've been a tech for about 20yrs, the last 10 has been at dealerships and have never broken 40k in a year. I've known guys who make alot but it's by cutting lots of corners and straight gunning everything together knowing they don't have to deal with the comebacks. Worst part is these are the guys the shops celebrate because of the amount of hours they pull in.
Would not do this job for less than $100k a year. If you’re driven and smart you should be at $120k+. I do my fair share of programming and electronic diag. I wish I could just do that and make the same money. Unfortunately there are no shops around me big enough to support a full time diag guy. A guy I use to work with relocated to northern VA and does mobile programming for a company and makes $150k a year.

Sometimes its just a shop problem, for the first time in my 7 year career i made 100% efficiency. I been busting my ass making as much hours as i can but its extremely hard to break over 30 hours as an indy tech. Whether its intermittents, bad parts, free inspections, etc. the blame is always put on you that you just have to produce more. But guess what im always the dude that has no cars left and im also the diagnostic guy nearly keeping up with the suspension/brakes tech. So is it really the tech or a shop problem?
there is a way to make 100k as a auto mechanic start your own mechanic business there is no doubt you could make 100k if you have enough customers and business you would be doing better than working at a shop and be able to make top dollar no doubt about it.

We had 6 techs, 11 lifts, 2 tire changers, 2 balancers, and no supplies, weights, filters always out, fluids never on hand and expected 1hr job in 40min, hourly tech cut to 7hr/day to pull in 8+hr/shift cause of $$$ with new manager thats 27 lied on resume. We were pulling in $130,000 on good months but I believe that included gas sales.
Hours have plummeted at my shop. Owner got in too big of a hurry to add more techs and now everyone is hurting. And I’m the one who gets stuck with all the heavy line plus the time wasters and headaches. Been kinda looking but can’t announce on LinkedIn because he’s a LinkedIn stalker. Interviewed at Simply True but I don’t like the idea of being my own parts guy plus having to sell the job to the customer. Still keeping an eye out.
Want to make $100k as an auto tech- here is how !?! Get a job at a quick lube and sell cocaine ( or meth depending on the area ) on the side. Seriously though if you’re trying to pull $100k there’s way easier ways to do it than wrenching on passenger vehicles. It’s pretty much the only industry where even if you land in the less than 1% of hired techs that pull that kind of cash you still don’t really earn $100k. You gross $100k. By the time tools, clothes, edu, healthcare cost , etc get deducted a lot of that income is gone and if you go self employed the gross amount grows but so does the cost/headaches. So unless you’re some trust fund kid that’s going to inherit a legacy shop and a lot of money (even then it’s an iffy career choice) go do something else with your life. Because it’s always an illusion when you think you’re making money in this field. Wished I’d figured this out sooner and didn’t waste so much of my life on this hellscape of an industry.

Literally no one is making $50/hour in automotive repair. The average A-tech makes $32/hour on flat rate. Industry is a joke.

Work for a fleet I make $58 an hour plus I get 20 hours overtime a week working nights I make 2500 after taxes every week

Unless you own the shop, it's not worth it. The 24 year old service writer will make more than the master tech, a lot more.

So far I'm at $77,132 and have the rest of the year to go. Last year I hit $48k.

I'll be at 110-120 this year depending on how the rest of things shake out, I'm at 90 some right now I'd have to dig up a pay stub.

Hours have plummeted at my shop. Owner got in too big of a hurry to add more techs and now everyone is hurting. And I’m the one who gets stuck with all the heavy line plus the time wasters and headaches. Been kinda looking but can’t announce on LinkedIn because he’s a LinkedIn stalker. Interviewed at Simply True but I don’t like the idea of being my own parts guy plus having to sell the job to the customer. Still keeping an eye out.
Want to make $100k as an auto tech- here is how !?! Get a job at a quick lube and sell cocaine ( or meth depending on the area ) on the side.
Seriously though if you’re trying to pull $100k there’s way easier ways to do it than wrenching on passenger vehicles. It’s pretty much the only industry where even if you land in the less than 1% of hired techs that pull that kind of cash you still don’t really earn $100k. You gross $100k. By the time tools, clothes, edu, healthcare cost , etc get deducted a lot of that income is gone and if you go self employed the gross amount grows but so does the cost/headaches.
So unless you’re some trust fund kid that’s going to inherit a legacy shop and a lot of money (even then it’s an iffy career choice) go do something else with your life. Because it’s always an illusion when you think you’re making money in this field. Wished I’d figured this out sooner and didn’t waste so much of my life on this hellscape of an industry.
and this is the whole issue in todays world!!! MONEY, to be efficient and hit your weekly targets etc so you can earn your bonuses, or bill 70 hours work in a week when you only worked 50 is what damages this trade, everything is on a time limit your forced to rush diagnostics & repairs for a bigger pay check, and then everyone wonders why jobs get "bodged" . best thing is to work for self were you can set the pace and price of your work. and the biggest thing to takeaway from this is, live within your means and stop being greedy. what's the point in being rich?????? what will you gain other than being able to "Show Off" materialistic things that no one else gives a toss about???? in my 35 years of existence not ONCE have i ever met a happy "RICH" Person. What does that tell you???
