If you've seen the documentary analysing it, then two things are clear 1. Rock tried to improve his "image" using the documentary 2. Triple H planned the whole thing and HOPED that audience would revolt which they did

(He is the "higher ups" hes a board member, there's very few people above him, none of which are even WWE guys.) Sure, maybe theres a chance in the wake of Vince, they wanted Dwayne to become the new figurehead of WWE, but I doubt they came to that idea without his input and even then, that doesn't require him becoming WWE champion. The fans turned on him and he at least had the good sense to do whats right for the business, because he wasn't going to get what he wanted either way. (another moment in the spotlight with the crowd cheering his name)

There is a possibility it was HHH doing some backstage scheming on that one. In the documentary they talked about how Cody stayed hot, and it was really obvious what they needed to do.

WWE has dropped the ball in this way prior to all this. Namely with Bray Wyatt, LA Knight, and CM Punk among others. LA Knight claims he is glad things went the way that they did because he enjoyed the time he had in the trenches, the indies, TNA, doing commercials, and etc. so good on him but they had and still have their next Rock or Stone Cold in LA Knight but he's in his 40's and just now getting his first title. CM Punk was partially his own fault but he was more than half right and justified in doing the pipe bomb back in the day and they stole from him the same way they almost stole from Cody and then some from Punk. Punk made his own share of mistakes and he had some growing up and learning and maturing to do, but it doesn't change that WWE and multiple involved dropped the ball back then too. Bray Wyatt was outstanding, gone far too soon (R.I.P.), and he was probably the greatest of his generation and easily the most creative mind. They booked him poorly for years, deprived him of title wins or spotlight at times, screwed with his character and vision more than once, had the audacity to fire him for a time and in the process lost him time and truly hurt him during that time. They had something amazing with Bray and chose to make completely backwards decisions when it came to writing, booking, and pushing the wrong people at multiple points. WWE has done this in other instances but these are the biggest examples as of late, and they will undoubtedly continue to do this. We'll see how much things change going into the Triple H Era and the Netflix deal but even after the PG Era and Vince Era they still make some of the same mistakes. They will still have lines they aren't willing to cross, things they aren't willing to do, risks they aren't willing to take, and they will at times stay in their comfort zone or maintain a level of predictability.

as a skeptic, i can't help but think the entire farce was a work. but another part of me questions why they would have the whole "Cody gives his spot to the Rock" promo to begin with. why not just have the Rock show up initially as a face, then have him jump Cody with the rest of the Bloodline? why go through all that extra effort to turn him heel?

And some people still say that it was all big mastermind plan from the very beginning... It wasn't. It was probably the worst booking decision ever made. And the fact that it turned out to be a beginning of a great story, doesn't make this speciffic decision better. They literally said in the documentary that Rocky was planned to face Roman, Punk was planned to face Seth, there was no speciffic plan for Cody at Mania and he still won Royal Rumble Match! What a mess... I think there was a tug of war backstage between Rocky and everyone on his side, and others who didn't like this decision (possibly Hunter, Prichard and Hayes, maybe Aldis). They didn't know what to do until the last moment (even after deadline, cause it happened after Royal Rumble) because they were split and there wasn't anyone like Vince who had one last word. But we won't gonna know what actually happened behind the scenes, probably ever.
Punk supposedly got injured during the match, though. So how does that line up with who wins? They had the finish long before that, and it was cody. My best guess is punk at elimination chamber for Seth. His injury affected that, but not the rumble.
The people who say this was the plan all along are the same people who think WWE always planned for Danielson to win at Mania 30. Pure, absolute corporate loyaltists who think a company literally cannot put a foot wrong.
HHH planed the whole thing, you could have simply avoided Cody winning the Rumble but knowing Rock was going to beat Roman Triple H made Cody win, then immediately told him to point towards Roman while. Michael kept on telling us that we will see Roman v Cody at WM 40. After that night, only two things would have been logical for Cody to miss WM 40. 1. Either he did something very very bad (Benoit or Vince level bad) or 2. Cody died unexpectedly or 3. he had a serious health issue like Bray Wyatt (God rest his soul) if none of these things happened there was no way Fans would have been okay with anything else especially after that visual of Cody pointing to Roman.

The thing is, If Rock was in the rumble and won the rumble, we would have known the plan is Rock v Roman, and there wouldn't have been this level of backlash. Even then, at that point it would be a case of cody beating Roman at Summerslam.

First off; the visual of Seth and Roman sitting all the way up in the VIP box seats watching is so incredible to me. They were quite literally at the top of the mountain. It’s so crazy to see how far they’ve come. Second; I’ll never forget that Smackdown when Rock came out and handed his spot over to the Rock. What a shitty feeling that was. I almost didn’t even want to watch WWE anymore. And not because I’m a diehard Cody fan but because watching these guys go out there night after night busting their asses just to lose the spots they worked so hard for to cElEbRiTiEs had just gotten so old. And how out of touch is Rock and Brian Gewirtz to think Cody was gonna go out there with a big old grin on his face and then jump up and down with glee when Rock came out and do the whole “yeah!! Go kick his ass, Rocky!!” Huh!? 😂 I’m really glad the fans fought so hard for Cody. It was nice seeing the WRESTLERS win for once 👏
Us. The fans. We're the reason Cody got his mania moment at 40. Rock went back into WWE thinking he was saving Wrestlemania from the controversy that WWE and Vince were under with the Janelle Grant lawsuit. We wanted none of that, and so we started #WeWantCody, then that spilled over into the weekly crowds, and the rest is history. WWE is very much a crowd-driven product and we're fortunate to now have HHH be the head of creative because unlike Vince, he listens.
They did that to test him, see how he’d react to the news, really play a psychological game with him. Is he going to do what’s right for business when decisions need to be made or is he gonna get emotional and make us definitely take away this opportunity. I’m sure after that meeting the Triple H inner circle huddled up and said “Yea he’s gonna wrestle for the title. He handled that very well.”
And now The Rock is lying and saying that it was his idea or I should say his decision to continue with the Cody vs Roman match when we all know he wanted it to be him who faces Roman he wanted the spotlight on him
Yeah because this match has been 7 yrs in the making and schedules finally lined up. Remember hhh vs rock 2x they cut a promo and never happened. Fans was so damn desperate to have their boy finish the story that they think they can still get rock vs roman nah dumbasses ya potentially killed that match.

Roman didn’t do much because he didn’t have to. He was waaay overshadowed by rock and Cody. He did have some good promos in there, though. As overshadowed as he was, I think he was great at doing what he did. He didn’t need to do a lot and add fuel. It was already on fire and spreading.
I would not be surprised if Dwayne really did just want to do this shit for his own ego. The stunts and mandates he pulled with Black Adam to boost his own profile at the cost of the movie and tie-ins with Shazam make it clear he's not above those stunts
The Rock should stop lying. He wanted to Roman fight to happen the moment they did that stuff at Day 1, the mistake that he made was agreeing to Cody winning the Royal Rumble, had anyone else won the Rumble, we would have seen a different result, HHH booking Cody to win was the X Factor here because it made logical sense.
If they want Cody to beat Roman they could have done that at the previous wrestlemania. What's the point of him winning one more rumble and then having the Rock come out and Cody giving his spot to him, taking his spot back causing Rock and Roman vs Cody and Seth then Cody beating Roman for the title when they could have done that last year? All of it made zero sense. If you wanna have Roman pass 1000 days as champion, maybe make someone else face Roman at WM 39 and have Roman beat them instead? WWE could have save the moment for Cody. Cody vs Roman round 1 should have had Cody winning not losing. That would have made the impact better.
Reality is Vince got in trouble and they needed a distraction. No two ways about it. Vince doesn't get caught (don't start with it's just alligations bullshit the innocent don't pay for silence point blank period.) Cody never gives up mania

Assuming it’s true that they were 100% going with Rock vs Roman, what was the plan for Cody? They knew before the rumble he was going to win and not fight Roman but Punk vs Rollins was the other plan. What was Cody going to do had Punk not gotten hurt or the fans forced the change?

What Paul has done is tell stories that make sense...and letting Rock right Roman at 40 made no fkn sense given Cody made the whole year leading up to 40 and rematch Roman and complete the story. I told my coworker before 39 Cody wasn’t going to win and Roman would fight Rock in Philly. I’m a Philly fan and just wanted to believe he’d return in the stadium and no shit I forgot abt all of it I learned more abt Cody and the parts of the business I missed when I wasn’t watching for a while and believed he deserved to finish his story and when rock came back I thought to myself “this isn’t it” not after the yr of fighting Cody did to get back there. And before 40 he reminded me abt what we talked abt and this video just helped me confirm I was rlly right back in March 2023 and im glad Cody still finished his story anyways

Honestly he should’ve just lost the rumble, let Roman play the scared heel that knows Cody is the only guy that can beat em and Cody playing the babyface that eventually beats everyone he needs to, to get to Roman. That match being at WM 41. This way worked out fine except for the fact that Cody is still feuding with the bloodline so he could’ve still been doing that without the title, regardless Cody is the man and I look forward to what WWE is offering!
I think Triple H honestly planned the whole thing. The Rock taking the title match was a work, and was always meant to be Cody's title match... I don't believe the Rock was ever gonna take the title match.
@@mza4739 but why do an angle like that? it made it so awkward when they had to back pedal a week later and turn Rock heel. why not have Rock come in during the post-Rumble promo between Cody and Roman, talk some shit, then either have him attack Cody and try and take him oit of comission so he can face Roman, or have him jump Codu with the rest of the Bloodline and follow the same story from there. either way, you get a much smoother progression to Cody's uphill story and a smoother heel turn for the Rock as he tries to hijack Cody's Wrestlmania. i'm in the camp that Dwayne was just tossing his weight around and creative had little choice but to let him try.

There are things I have always known to be true. 1) I hated the Rock since the Punk'd episode where he got violent. 2) The shows the Rock's true colors as wanting to come in & steal Cody's limelight. 3) HHH decided to use wrestling psychology against the Rock & played the fans against him & Cody won the popularity contest. 4) The Rock has been out of the game for so long he can't play it anymore. 5) The fans are a lot smarter than they were 20 years ago on the WWE side. They are no longer casuals. Its where the smarks are. 6) The casuals are actually in AEW 7) The Rock has tried to produce himself into a better image with this joke of a documentary but it too has backfired like everything else he does 8) The Rock took over Vince's board seat the same day Vince was gone & the Rock got over once he began training in Pat Patterson's dressing room... One thing I don’t understand ESPECIALLY at that point in time is that it was set in stone Rollins vs Punk was the night one main event. Punk even said it that if he never got hurt, that’s the plan. So Rock vs Roman happens, whatever as that seed was planted months ago. What then for Cody? I refuse to believe that “the fans changed this course” UNLESS an audible was called and that Punk was ACTUALLY supposed to win the Rumble but didn’t cause he got hurt mid match
If the original plan was to go rock and Roman for the wwe title, then the fumble was to have Cody win. The win should’ve been given to punk who had a story with Seth. If Cody’s story was the original plan, the fumble was giving rock his spot against Roman. Not that rock and Roman isn’t a stellar match, but the timing didn’t line up. That being said, we got something even better because we went through with Cody’s story in spite of the rock and also got rock turning heel to become the final boss. This was a rare moment in wrestling when bad timing and backstage politics ended up resulting in a far better product than either vision of what wrestlemania would look like.
So the plan was 7 yrs in the making and now we have to wait longer to maybe maybe see if it happens when we can see Roman vs Cody any time they want to present it
If Terra Ryzin was smart they should take a book out of NJPW with G1 Climax briefcase. Cody wins the RR, The Rock challenges him for it, and whoever wins faces the champion. Naw they really tried to hoe Cody.
It’s all a sham. At least the part of the story where they say Cody knew he couldn’t challenge Roman before the Rumble. They made this story up… I’ll tell you why. They say in that same documentary that the plan was for CM Punk and Seth Rollins to have their match at WM40… Yet, they cancelled it because Punk got injured. Which happened DURING Rumble, AFTER Cody was supposedly told he wouldn’t be challenging Roman. If what they’re saying is true, then Punk vs. Seth couldn’t be true because if Cody couldn’t fight Roman, then he’d be fighting Seth for the other title……. But he couldn’t do that because they were already going to have Punk vs. Seth…. So this part is all just a lie to add more to the story of a story that we were already content with lol.
For me personally, they could've let Roman pass Hogan for 3rd longest title run. He would've done it this year too. I get WM and "finishing Cody's story", it would've really solidified Roman's legacy IMO

WWE has dropped the ball in this way prior to all this. Namely with Bray Wyatt, LA Knight, and CM Punk among others.
LA Knight claims he is glad things went the way that they did because he enjoyed the time he had in the trenches, the indies, TNA, doing commercials, and etc. so good on him but they had and still have their next Rock or Stone Cold in LA Knight but he's in his 40's and just now getting his first title.
CM Punk was partially his own fault but he was more than half right and justified in doing the pipe bomb back in the day and they stole from him the same way they almost stole from Cody and then some from Punk. Punk made his own share of mistakes and he had some growing up and learning and maturing to do, but it doesn't change that WWE and multiple involved dropped the ball back then too.
Bray Wyatt was outstanding, gone far too soon (R.I.P.), and he was probably the greatest of his generation and easily the most creative mind. They booked him poorly for years, deprived him of title wins or spotlight at times, screwed with his character and vision more than once, had the audacity to fire him for a time and in the process lost him time and truly hurt him during that time. They had something amazing with Bray and chose to make completely backwards decisions when it came to writing, booking, and pushing the wrong people at multiple points.
WWE has done this in other instances but these are the biggest examples as of late, and they will undoubtedly continue to do this. We'll see how much things change going into the Triple H Era and the Netflix deal but even after the PG Era and Vince Era they still make some of the same mistakes. They will still have lines they aren't willing to cross, things they aren't willing to do, risks they aren't willing to take, and they will at times stay in their comfort zone or maintain a level of predictability.
The 50 year Rock saved this WrestleMania and made it 10000x greater, made cody 10x bigger than it/he was supposed to be

And the fact that it turned out to be a beginning of a great story, doesn't make this speciffic decision better. They literally said in the documentary that Rocky was planned to face Roman, Punk was planned to face Seth, there was no speciffic plan for Cody at Mania and he still won Royal Rumble Match! What a mess... I think there was a tug of war backstage between Rocky and everyone on his side, and others who didn't like this decision (possibly Hunter, Prichard and Hayes, maybe Aldis). They didn't know what to do until the last moment (even after deadline, cause it happened after Royal Rumble) because they were split and there wasn't anyone like Vince who had one last word. But we won't gonna know what actually happened behind the scenes, probably ever.

Michael kept on telling us that we will see Roman v Cody at WM 40. After that night, only two things would have been logical for Cody to miss WM 40. 1. Either he did something very very bad (Benoit or Vince level bad) or 2. Cody died unexpectedly or 3. he had a serious health issue like Bray Wyatt (God rest his soul) if none of these things happened there was no way Fans would have been okay with anything else especially after that visual of Cody pointing to Roman.

First off; the visual of Seth and Roman sitting all the way up in the VIP box seats watching is so incredible to me. They were quite literally at the top of the mountain. It’s so crazy to see how far they’ve come.
Second; I’ll never forget that Smackdown when Rock came out and handed his spot over to the Rock. What a shitty feeling that was. I almost didn’t even want to watch WWE anymore. And not because I’m a diehard Cody fan but because watching these guys go out there night after night busting their asses just to lose the spots they worked so hard for to cElEbRiTiEs had just gotten so old.
And how out of touch is Rock and Brian Gewirtz to think Cody was gonna go out there with a big old grin on his face and then jump up and down with glee when Rock came out and do the whole “yeah!! We wanted none of that, and so we started #WeWantCody, then that spilled over into the weekly crowds, and the rest is history.
WWE is very much a crowd-driven product and we're fortunate to now have HHH be the head of creative because unlike Vince, he listens.

That match being at WM 41. If the original plan was to go rock and Roman for the wwe title, then the fumble was to have Cody win. The win should’ve been given to punk who had a story with Seth.

That being said, we got something even better because we went through with Cody’s story in spite of the rock and also got rock turning heel to become the final boss.

The Rock's, a part timer at best, longest title reign was 117 days.

There's no doubt Triple H sabotage Rock vs Roman by having Cody STILL winning the rumble despite knowing they were going with the other match. But i will say they should've just let The Rock or CM Punk win. I honestly believe if The Rock would've won the Rumble the fans wouldn't have "turned" on The Rock because most of us was expecting him to be on the match. 🤦♂️ but hey everything worked out 🤷♂️
