The story goes JM was "discovered" whilst performing SRV covers. His technical style, range of techniques, and depth of scales and phrasing cannot be disputed. He really is one of the finest players from the last 2 decades. The mere fact that he landed the gig with Dead and Company speaks volumes about his level of respect as a master in the industry. Like his music (or personality or anything else) or not, the talent is undeniably strong in this one, Luke.

We hung around and spoke with him for a few mins after the show and he showed me his SRV tattoo on his shoulder. Needless to say it was cool back then, but looking back it is even cooler. I have the ticket stub signed from him that night.

Right here is the perfect illustration of what it means to by a great musician or artist rather than a technician.
There are millions of people who sincerely enjoy music but of those, not many who know the difference between a player and an artist.
I've been a music junkie ever since I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 on TV... which should give you a feel for my age.
For example, I'm still not convinced that Joe Bonamassa is a great guitarist. He sure as hell has chops to die for but no matter how many times I listen to him play, I'm never moved. I'm impressed as hell at his athletic ability on the fret board but his playing just doesn't take me out of myself yet I'm constantly reading comments here on TH-cam about what a great guitarist he is. In my opinion those comments come from people who love music and are impressed with his skill, mistaking it for artistry. It's easy to mistake the two attributes but they are not thye same thing.
As for John Mayer, he's got great chops as well. They're the chops that any amateur wannabe guitarist and a lot of pros would die for but they simply don't approach those of Bonamassa. Despite that, Mayer has what Bonamassa doesn't have and that's soul. He has the heart of an artist and he has it in spades over Joe B.
When Mayer gets into it he can make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and he does it with ease. Joe B. has never done that for me.
I've been to countless concerts in my life from 1969 to the present and Mayer is on my list to see because I haven't seen him live yet. The fact is that the older I get the less interested I am in fretboard gymnastics and fast playing. Don't get me wrong, when it's done right it moves me but that is NOT what makes a great artist on the guitar.
If you are moved when listening to B.B. King then you know what an artist is. If he doesn't get to you than you know diddly about what it means to be an artist on guitar.
I don't generally get into arguments about who's a better guitar player and all that nonsense but before watching this video I watched a Joe B. video so I felt compelled to make the point after reading all the nonsense about Joe B.
Joe Bonamassa is a damn good guitarist but John Mayer is an artist on the instrument and as far as I'm concerned the difference is like night and day.

Al Fattah Fajar S I'll bet that you're relatively young. I'm not insulting you because of your age but if you're a music lover, the older you get the more you'll realize that what I've said is true.
Speed and agility on the guitar has nothing to do with a musicians ability to connect with an audience on an emotional level. Enjoying and being impressed by a player who can play fast and accurately is NOT the same thing as connecting with a musician emotionally no more than being impressed by someone who speaks fluently and eloquently about something you don't have in common with the speaker is the same as someone speaking to you about something you have experienced yourself.
This is NOT opinion. It's a fact. YOU can't separate the feeling of awe from the feeling of identification or commiseration. They are NOT the same thing. Only life experience and emotional maturity teaches one to understand the difference.

He is as good. Different style is all. All the greats had very few in the same time frame playing their style and thats why they are known as the greats. I see Mayor on more list of current greats than I do Govan. It doesn't take away that Govan will be known as one of the greats though. I Love Brian Setzer and he is known as one of the greats. But when he was active there were few playing the rockabilly sound. If he had more competition maybe he would not be on any list. Sadly in 30-40 yrs Justin beiber will probably be on some list of greats and that rihanna chick. The greatest thing about her is she is hot as fuck. Her music sucks though lol.

Hey John, it is so refreshing to see an artist like yourself that is secure enough as a person to share your knowledge and talents with other wannabe's. I've come across some real primadonna's in my days of playing and in life in general, that hide their licks and tricks as if in a competition... I get as much joy out of sharing my knowledge if not more then feeling the need to be on top... as if one can be anyway. You are and have been an inspiration to me and anyone who is smart enough to shut their pie hole and listen for once. You seem to have a great philosophical insight to life in general, more so then most. The fact that you put it to music and share it with those who get it, it's just our lucky day. Thank you man... The pop people come to his gigs and get in touch with the blues again and get blown away by his blues skills and guitar skills in general. Live in LA is a great example with for instance slow dancing and gravity. When he goes all out in the solo s you hear his greatest idol back in his playing which is of course SRV. John’s such a good guy, and my favorite guitarist if I was forced to choose. These lessons are the coolest thing on TH-cam. Hope he decides to come over to hang out so I can listen to him improv all day.

He sure does make it look easy . . . . I remember the first time I saw him LIVE and he blew me away with his guitar playing . .. I always had to defend being a fan of his back then (I was much older with teenage kids!) but I saw something then that I knew was special and was way beyond the “pop star” label he was getting . . . No disrespect to any pop stars out there . . .. it’s just John is much deeper than that musically I felt💗

When I first heard John Mayer's music I never would've guessed he could play like he can. When he plays the Blues he's got such a tasty list of licks. I've "borrowed" more than a few licks from him. He mixes major and minor and uses mixolydian as well as anyone I've heard.

You ain't along brother. I remember being like, oh god another teeny bopper singer songwriter. Then I heard a clip of him playing some cool phrygian solo over a weird chord progression. It surprised the hell out of me. Lol

ive started to take guitar as a way of singing rather than learning from others and licks online. do like an "a" shuffle and imagine the guitar as a voice. it opens up like a new world because your imagining your guitar as a voice opening up new creations of licks that no where else would teach you.

I knew he was good, but the technical level with his rhythm, knowledge of the fretboard, I did not expect. The pick/no pick just blew my mind🤯. Could you imagine learning to do that on an acoustic. It would be full of picks in no time.
