      I've only had one scammer attempt the grandparent scam on me. An American scammer called and said; "Grandpa?" "Who is this?" I asked. "It's your grandson. I need some money." he replied. "What's your name?" He paused for a long time, then I told him he was doing the grandparent scam wrong. "You have to do some research on your mark first. I think this scam is a little over your head!" (BTW, I don't even HAVE a grandson!)

      They almost got my nana twice. One time it was my cousin was arrested on spring break in Mexico and needed bail money (he was 40 at the time, married with kids, no spring breaks in Cancun lol). She was at western union about to send the money when the agent stopped her. Then they tried again doing the same kind of thing with my sister. Luckily she remembered the last time and called my mom.

I asked some questions and turns out she was told to send $10k to "free her grandson." (I won't go into detail, but it was a loooong conversation) I said, "You know...just for giggles, why don't we give him a call on the number that you know aaaaand let's see if he picks up." It was great!!! First, I got to hear the grandson go, "Noooo! Grandma, it's a scam! Don't do it!" Then, the scammers called her phone and I got to tell them to go fly a kite. Then a few days later, she came back to tell me that her grandson sent her a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Such a wonderful, loving family, and disaster averted! It was beautiful! ❤️

    • @wellscostello97
      @wellscostello97 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, Alzheimer’s and dementia patients are their prime targets. They’re prime targets not only because they can’t remember or follow stories/details; but mainly because there is a high level of embarrassment that comes with older people’s with dementia inability to remember things so, instead of embarrassing themselves, they pretend they know exactly what you are talking about and that they remember everything. This makes it easy to make them go along with anything you say regardless of how little sense it makes. I have multiple grandparents with dementia and they often insist that they remember things that they clearly don’t just to avoid embarrassment. My grandpa has been scammed out of 10s of thousands of dollars in the last few months and we’ve had to resort to only allowing him access to money in the form of, ironically, prepaid visa gift cards. He has no access to credit cards, debit cards, checks, anything with any connection to a bank account. It’s sad, but you have to protect them from themselves sometimes

      I deal with money transfers as part of my job, and part of that job is stopping people from being scammed. The vast majority of would-be victims are elderly people who are confused as to how the whole money transfer process even works as a concept, let alone why they're being made to perform the specific transfer in question. They just want to help their "grandkid" and trust that everything is legit.
      Few things in this world are as despicable as targeting the elderly like that.

If they handle the situation well enough, they could maybe use fear to pull it off. Virtual kidnapping is an epidemic in Argentina, epidemic, to the point that almost everybody in the country was once called by them or know someone who was. Personally it happened once to me and once to my mother who was crying over the phone for one hour trying to save me from them while I was sleeping at home. Someone calls and starts crying asking for help pretending to be you to your parents. They called my mother at 4am forbid her to hang up and thretened to sever my fingers if she didnt comply. They ask for your money in cash , place it in a bag and go outside and throw it in the corner, then go back in and someone picks it up and they are gone. My mother asked twice which son they had, they stalled and she said a fake name, Nico? they said yes and she knew they had nobody and hung up. Most times they actually call form prision. Yes, they keep breaking the law from prision. Anyway, NEVER STOP KITBOGA, respect from Argentina, huge fan here.

    Kit, you clearly don’t know about US law. The FTC, when they have had enough, when they are assisting in kidnappings ALWAYS chops the kidnapped person into pieces. While trying to help them. Then they walk into prisons, hand them the phone, and the kidnapped person usually goes through a process called “trauma accents” where they start to sound like Indian people. Jesus, educate yourself Kit. 😂

      Good for her. Of course not all Indian callers are scammers, but it's certainly a factor that makes it significantly more likely. When dealing with strangers, we have to use what information we have about them to make educated guesses about the probability that they're on the level. It sounds like your grandma has no trouble with that, and has ignored all the egalitarian propaganda that tells us to ignore our instincts in that regard.
