Checking the Uniformity of the Sprinklers on a Center Pivot: "The Can Test"

  • Center pivots have sprinklers located along its entire length. The spacing of the sprinkler heads can vary with distance from the pivot point. The area covered by a sprinkler increases the farther it is away from the pivot point, thus nozzle sizes increase also. Uniformity of water application can be affected if the sprinkler heads are damage, have the wrong nozzle size or there are leaks. In this video, Dr. Tom Scherer, North Dakota State University Extension Agriculture Engineer, will show how to do a sprinkler uniformity test of a typical center pivot using a single line of catch cans and how to collect as well as analyze the data.

    good test. but I want to ask you how to evaluate hydraulic head loss and head variation along the length of laterals of center pivot irrigation system

    That's a good point to remember, but can the nuzzles be adjusted separately ,i mean the amount of water discharging from nuzzles be decreased or increased ?
