What appears now as an insignificant building from the past, is actually the first modern cinema of Orlando Florida. Yes, it was the first modern day cinema in Orlando. I remembered it opened several days after President Kennedy's assassination. Many years have passed since I was a projectionist there. As I recall it was the first twin theatre in town. Florida State Theatres opened it in late November 1963 premiering with the John Wayne movie McLlintock. At the time , they would run 20 minute film reels, "bicycling them" (walk). them 30 feet between the two projection rooms upstairs with one projectionist each. They would operated that way with shows at, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30, 4:30, 5:30,7:30, 9:30, etc for years. One film print, for two theatres. That worked great until they automated the projection room in 1974. After that, it was one feature film on each side with 60 min film reels, with one projectionist for both sides. I was there during the 70's and early 80's. I ran the Saturday midnight "Rocky Horror" shows.

I lived in a place that was jacked up most of the time and had a jack adjustment often, with high winds, tornadoes etc. It moved sometimes like a ship, but didn't ever feel like it was going over. On the other hand, Have stood on a very rickety stage on wobbly blocks with a precarious stack of equally rickety cinderblocks forming an odd staircase to semi crawl up. Someone guided me up, and had me exactly in what they deemed the safe spot was, and they guided my hand to the mic stand and boom, and said do not step forward, it's a twenty foot drop to cement. "Putting your navigational cane horizontal right in front of your toes." Then standing behind me the guy shifted his weight, rocking the whole contraption we were standing on. He said to just stay up there and don't move my feet, afterwards he would climb back up to get me. I think there was somehow a whole drum kit precariously balanced right behind me where if the drummer leaned back he would just have gone backwards headfirst onto the soundboard. It was scary! I probably gave my best vocal. I was trying not to think about falling off, and keeping my feet rooted to the floor like a skateboard. Was probably trying to hear the echo off the ceiling, and just the whole space, around. Large high ceiling place spread out kind of like Gilley's or something. Probably the last time I had just the right amount of adrenaline that enhanced instead of paralyzed. I was trying to stay loose enough to fall well if I felt the whole thing start to go down. I just kind of sang up towards the ceiling in the vicinity of the mic afraid to reach forward and knock the whole stand off. No echo, but the sound set up was amazing. Several months later I randomly came away from a brisket place with a massively larger carry out than myself and friend ordered, because the guy just pushed it on us, saying he had walked in during the middle of that thing, and thought I was lip syncing until he was there for awhile longer, and other guy climbed up to help me climb back down backwards. He just kept grabbing one ankle and then the other, putting my feet exactly where they needed to be in the uneven pile of blocks. However they had that thing suspended must've been just floating in the center of all the speaker points. My stomach was more shaky after climbing back down. (cold sweat emoji).
