You can't deny how genius of a casting it was of Tim Burton....to make Michael Keaton Bruce Wayne/Batman. Looking at these early Letterman appearances Keaton would probably be the last person anyone would ever think of as the Dark Knight in a serious Batman movie. A campy Adam West type maybe...but not serious and dark. Burton saw something that others didn't see....stroke of genius.
So many fans were pissed off when that happened. A COMEDIAN? Playing BATMAN?! And he went on to be one the best movie Batmans ever. If you ask me why it's because he played both Batman and Bruce Wayne as different but believable characters.
I just learned that Michael Keaton and David Letterman worked together on the short lived Mary Tyler Moore Hour in the late 70’s. Seeing 2 guys that were working their “way up” in The Biz talking is so cool
The 80s era Letterman on NBC is etched in my brain. I used to set the VCR to tape Carson and Letterman since I was still in Jr High/High school back then and watch the next day. CBS Letterman just wasn't the same for me. The original Late Night was iconic. Went to see him twice in 88 the studio was tiny.
Omg I just saw dave & micheal dancing & singing on the mary tyler moore variety show from 78 it is a must watch! Dave looks like he wants to jump out a window. Micheal is trying in it. He is so cute here in the first interview.
Probably strange to say (due to the fact that Michael has gotten so much a claim for his later films, including "Batman" etc.) but I feel he has never matched (or bettered) the role/work he did in this film "Night Shift!" This was a role that was MADE for his personality (or vice a versa?) And nobody ever Really rose to the occasion & wrote anything that fit him so perfectly - before or since.
If you haven't seen the movies "Clean &Sober" and "White Noise" , I encourage you to give them a view. Keaton's depth as an actor is evident in these films as well.
Hi Don, I was wondering if you had the FULL “Chinese Restaurant College Bowl” segment? Merrill Markoe mentions it in her Time Magazine look back at her Letterman days and this piece with Keaton is the only bit I've been able to find. Keep up the great work!
Essentially the beginning of the Letterman Show, and the perfect guest for Dave's brand of Frat boy, college age to 30 something humor. I never found Michael Keaton particularly funny, especially when pitted against the likes of his contemporaries like an Eddie Murphy or the spastic Robin Williams. However, lurking behind that contrived comedy was a seasoned actor waiting to blossom into a pretty. decent actor. Still plays theist Batman with only Cristian Bale able to give him a run for his money. On a side note, loved the early 80's, recently turned 21, in college, with no real direction, but emulating Keaton (go figure !) with not necessarily academics army focus but more focused on going to nightclubs and sowing our notes. I think that I can speak for millions of Americans in my age group at the time. Miss those days !
Hey Don, you have any of the Letterman Home Movie Festival? Keaton made a great short where he's walking down the street, sees Ron Howard eating in a restaurant, gets his attention and Ronnie is clearly uncomfortable having run into him. All a gag of course, but haven't seen it since it was on originally.
night shift micheal and henry winkler as happy days ex actor of happy ron howard as 1982 of movies with this movies as doctor as micheal is good 29 as 1977 and other rol ma this movies is success ciao
This is what I miss about the current schlock that counts as late night talk show. The only 2 hosts that can hold a candle to Eighties -era Letterman are Conan O'Brien and Seth Myers. Kimmel and Colbert are major yawners. In comparison to guys like Keaton, most of the guests on the current shows are very boring and shallow.
In all these interviews, Dave looks like he's just "tolerating" Michael. Although he must have liked him somewhat to have him on so often in just two years.
Michael Keaton is one of the best guests on a talk show. The guy is genuinely hilarious and down to mirth.
mirth!?
pro tip: you can watch movies on kaldroStream. Been using it for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Cristiano Brayden yup, been watching on kaldrostream for since december myself :D
@Cristiano Brayden definitely, been watching on KaldroStream for months myself =)
@Cristiano Brayden definitely, I have been watching on kaldrostream for since november myself :D
If you haven't seen "Night Shift" you are missing something truly special.
Keaton was a master of the absurd. He's dropping jokes nobody gets. Mulitplicity is one of the funniest movies of all time. :)
I always get his jokes. I find them very relatable
Hell yeah!

Yep,
So many fans were pissed off when that happened. A COMEDIAN? Playing BATMAN?! And he went on to be one the best movie Batmans ever. If you ask me why it's because he played both Batman and Bruce Wayne as different but believable characters.
Keaton is King of Cool
I loved him in the Mr Mom film in the scenes with Ann Jillian, they were so funny together!
I'm here after the news of Michael Keaton possibly returning to be Batman again
He's originally from around the Pittsburgh area. A guy I used to work with, his mom and Michael's mom both went to the same church.
This dude is incredible
It's Billy Blaze straight outta NIGHT SHIFT!! haha
0:45 -- Funnily enough, his eyebrows are the exact shape of the drawn-on eyebrows on Adam West's Batman costume.
Well spotted
I've always believed that Bruce Willis modeled his character in the TV series "Moonlighting" on Michael Keaton's character in the film "Night Shift."
🤔🤔🤔
I watched this episode ....well all episodes back then ....I was still living with my parents in the funeral home that they managed lol true story...
That got dark🤣
Nice Guy
Always Polite and Treating others with Respect .
Love ❤️
Night Shift
Ron Howard’s First Big 🎥
Commercially a Success!
Squirrels do love a slice a pie,
I just learned that Michael Keaton and David Letterman worked together on the short lived Mary Tyler Moore Hour in the late 70’s. Seeing 2 guys that were working their “way up” in The Biz talking is so cool
Dave's funniest guests were always Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Michael Keaton and Norm.
And Pee-wee Herman :-)
Norm!!!
Eddie, Bruce Willis.
I agree, but would also add, Howard Stern, Julia Roberts, Regis Philbin and Bruce Willis.
@@PatrickKeating Whoa! How could I forget Norm? Changed.
34 years before Pizza Rat it was Pizza Squirrel.
Keaton was ahead of his time.
Cant wait for Keaton part 2. If there be one. No rush of course. Hurry up.

@@douglaswilke8582 "Clean and Sober" was great, never saw "White Noise".
Beetlejuice is the role he was born to play
@@jammiedodger I can understand that thought; he and that role fit each other like a glove!
Michael Keaton is Daddy.
I see you comment this on a ton of Michael Keaton videos but I couldn't agree more. ❤❤
There is the Beetlejuice “HEY”
Michael Douglas
His film Johnny Dangerously makes a lot of sense now. He clearly loves old gangster movies.
Love nightshift but that was painful
@3:30 the og Pizza rat story.
It was Mort, not Bazooka Joe, that wore his shirt up around his mouth
I'm looking for the episode where they talk about baseball a lot and mention Larry King
Wow so he was trolling with clips long before Paul Rudd was.
Hi Don, I was wondering if you had the FULL “Chinese Restaurant College Bowl” segment? Merrill Markoe mentions it in her Time Magazine look back at her Letterman days and this piece with Keaton is the only bit I've been able to find. Keep up the great work!
I do and will put it up after I finish some work projects.
Excellent! I'm looking forward to it!
It's now up -- th-cam.com/video/e9NlixOwgak/w-d-xo.html

9:55: Is Emma Stone his secret daughter? She looks just like this young Michael Keaton, down to the facial expressions and eyes.
anyone see keaton on Norm's netflix talkshow? this is great and Keaton is still really funny...
coke or at least 9 espressos way too pumped
Ohhh, it looks like Eddie Murphy might have got the crying bit in Delirious from Keaton.
13:46 Dave mentions Catherine O'Hara being there that night...5 years later Michael and Catherine star in Beetlejuice
my name is also keaton
Five of Michael's grandmothers don't approve of his posture on the Letterman program
He has piano hands...look at those lonnnnng fingers
Leon and Pig disliked this video!!!
ocd...adhd....genius
Could of been a great Standup if he stuck with it

Michael was, to me, one of Dave’s favorite guests.
Has he had a little too much cough syrup perhaps before coming on the show?
I'm thinking Keaton was not one of Letterman's favorite guests...
I’m thinking the opposite. There was a bond between them that began when both were cast members on “Mary.”
