Awesome - welcome!! So glad to have you along! We built the bed platform for a few reasons. First, you hit the nail on the head with storage! It also allows us to keep our stuff covered/from being seen while out on the road, too. The other big reason that we built it was to level the surface that we would be sleeping on. Most SUVs (ours included) have a cargo area where the folded down seats do not lay completely flat. It’s about a 4in rise from the folded down seats (where are heads are) to the end of the cargo area (where are feet are). So all in all - much more concealed storage and leveled sleeping surface!

We absolutely love this build and have loved the ease of being able to travel this way! Such a great idea and a beneficial plan you all put together! My only regret is that we didn’t make it sooner to be traveling this way more often.
What size was the mattress before you trimmed with the box cutters? I have a 2018 RAV4. I've been searching for the perfect mattress. Thank you for sharing. I truley enjoyed.
We purchased a Full size mattress! Be prepared that it is a bit cumbersome and messy, but SO WORTH IT for the quality of sleep once it’s finished! Haha :)
While we haven’t made it in a 3rd gen Rav, it seems like the cargo area dimensions (with the seats folded down) are very comparable! I would just measure the dimensions of your cargo area just to be sure this size of platform would fit before making the cuts. You can always adjust the width/length/height if needed!
