Cemetery gates . Is about a game being played in a graveyard. Keates yates and Wilde are 3 poets. People who like poets walk around cemeteries scoring points of headstones by identifying what poems are on them and by whom. I have never played it myself BTW.
I bought it on vinyl, and recorded it to a long playing TDK for a single side playthrough. Good times. Thanks for reminding me. And thanks Ricky for the chance to go back and remember what it was like the first time. Subbed and here for the journey. Can I suggest the other great Brit Band of rhe 80’s - The Cure. I’d start with either In Between Days (early) or their absolute masterpiece Disintegration. I think that one will destroy you. Huge albums. In all ways. Peace.
I too was dancing and freaking out the first time I heard cemetery gates...and i get teary and smile after all these years. Old friends long passed, you know the drill...so glad we have songs like this to rev us up in our autumnal years...
Great reaction! The Yeats in Cemetry Gates is referring to the Irish poet William Butler Yeats. Most Smiths lyrics are references to bygone poets, artists, writers and films/actors from which Morrissey drew inspiration. Many from his childhood but also people like Oscar Wilde from an even earlier time.
your immediate reactions to these songs are exactly what they got from me in 1987 and almost everyone that really listens to thee songs for the first time.
Bae, I was 19 where this dropped. It drove me crazy. I got it on vinyl and it spun countless times. It is certainly one the best of The Smiths' albums. My favorite songs are: I Know It's Over, Cemetry Gates and There Is a Light. At that time, I was also listening a lot to another great young artist: Bob Marley. I suggest you check his records too. I love your vibes bud. Take care!
I love your energy 😂 I discovered this channel with the Radiohead albums, now the Smiths. Makes me rediscover them. I wish you'll do a Joy Division sometime !
Three things First you need to go back and listen to Meat is Murder, then move on to their last album Strangeways, Here We Come. Second you need to listen to the Stone Roses self-titled album, and lastly listen to Happy Mondays' pills n thrills and bellyaches. I can tell you like the upbeat dancier side of the Smiths and I think youd dig these two records.
Never Had No One Ever is right there with Every Breath You Take by the Police for 80s stalker songs. When he sings "I hate to intrude, but I'm alone and I've never has no one, ever, " - shivers! "I Know its Over" is such a grower. Singing about "It takes strength to be gentle and kind" while being the odd one out in a broken relationship is just incredible. Glad you loved the record. Its just as impactful today, as in 1985.
‘ Morrissey , ya gotta chill “….. ha ha. Lovely reaction. You felt it fella. When you danced around during Cemetry Gates I was in stitches. “ This is life saving music” Indeed.
If you love "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" then check out "Here's Where The Story Ends" by the Sundays. It has EXACTLY the same Vibe, speed and energy!!! I couldn't believe it when I found that song.
came across your channel bro and i read a comment about how you used to lowkey like indie music but felt like your peers would think its weird. ima be honest, not many people our age listening to multiple genres. theres such a vast and immersive world of music, sure everyone can like whatever they want but some people will legit put you down for your music taste (my american friends always call english music trash) which sucks, more people should be expanding their music tastes. every day i always feel like ive expanded my musical knowledge. some bands like The Cure go crazy when stoned too, Steely Dan is godtier when high! you a hero for the videos you be putting out, allows me to potentially like some albums ive never heard of. i never subbed to a reaction channel before except for you because i can tell you are geuine and love making these kinds of videos. keep up the good work brother, you got a good community building up with each video, you probably wondering why im typing all of this to a stranger online, but hey, gotta give credit where credit is due :)
I think my favorite Smiths song is whichever one I've just listened to 😅 (except for Golden Lights, screw that song lol) I think theres a pretty strong case for this being the Smiths best album. As you said, "Mr Shankly," "Vicar," and "Some Girls" are its weak points, but the rest is so insanely good it more than makes up for them. Hell, "There Is a Light" alone could carry the whole album. But choosing a favorite Smiths album is often like choosing a favorite child
IMO some girls is one of the best, I also like Frankly Mr shankly a lot, my biggest Hot take is that Big mouth is the song that I second like the least from the whole album
If you liked "I Know It's Over", do yourself a favor and listen to the "Rank" live version of the song from 1986 - in my opinion, it's perhaps the best live version of any song ever.
bro i love your reaction to cemetary gates. these guys grew up 15 mins drive from where i live, and your milesssss away but we all appreciate the same.
Would love for you to react to Primus. They have an extremely unique sound which lead many to say "they are a genre unto themselves". Tommy the Cat (live at Bonaroo) is a great place to start. Jerry Was a Race Car Driver and Wynona's Big Brown Beaver are very popular too.
great reaction as usual! would love to see you react to Reading, Writing and Arithmetic by The Sundays. Easily the closest band to mirror the effects of The Smiths music without ripping them off
Thanks man!! They’ve always reminded me of The Cranberries, before I started listening to The Smiths more often. Now I can definitely hear their influence on The Sunday’s
I'm serious. You should react to their song This night has opened my eyes. that's the best smiths song hands down... And it's not on any of their albums. Just compilation albums.
New to your channel. The Queen is Dead is an excellent Smiths album and an overall classic. I was wondering what sort of equipment you film on, the video quality looks vintage in a cool way. Very much like a 90's sort of analogue quality. Great video.
for context, Some Girls isn't a fat-shaming song or anything offensive. my guess, taking into account the extra verse he added in the live version**, is that it's either: 1. a jab about men's obsession with breasts OR 2. a jab at people shaming bigger women i know a lot of people out there have a very surface level opinion about these lyrics, or claim it "rUiNs JoHnNy's gUiTaR mElOdY" xD **the verse in question: "on the shop floor, there's a calander, as obvious as snow...as if we wouldn't know"
Dude...Cemetry Gates is your new favorite?....wait until the album gets going....Every song on this album is a classic....after this go check out videos of them live...then listen to their last album "Strangeways Here Them Come"....

Love you understnding this album on first listen...wait until your fourth, fifth, 20th time listening to it. Its exceptional and you get it.
"It's so easy to laugh, It's so easy to hate, it takes guts to be gentle and kind"
My favourite lyrics of all time “ and when you want to live how’d you start, where’d you go, who’d you need to know?”
In the feels…every time!
And when you want to live
How'd you start?
Who're you to know?
Who remembers hearing this on cassette tape? I remember listening to it nonstop on my Walkman.
Until it began to make a funny noise... and your Walkman groaned and clicked to a halt? :0/
I bought it on vinyl, and recorded it to a long playing TDK for a single side playthrough. Good times. Thanks for reminding me. Still do…. At least once a year…😂
Me😂
I remember listening to this album as a high schooler in 1986 with the same joyful exuberance you have shown! Go Smiths!
I too was dancing and freaking out the first time I heard cemetery gates...and i get teary and smile after all these years. Old friends long passed, you know the drill...so glad we have songs like this to rev us up in our autumnal years...
You get it, sir! When you hit the middle of "it's over" I saw you eff'n get it. And then "cemetery gates" and and and...❤
"Bigmouth" is one of my all-time favorite songs.
Closing guitar riff on Some Girls is pure magic! Fire!
13:51 average smiths listening experience

I love that your one of the few who's not just listening to it, but feeling it. Welcome!
Hope you do some more Smiths! All of their albums are amazing. One of the best bands ever

This is the BEST Smiths review I've ever witnessed. Fantastic review!
Favourite Smiths album..Meat is Murder
Next on my list ‼️
Strangeways... :0)

Mancunian here, born in the same hospital as Morrissey. Park Hospital(now Trafford General) in Urmston. The very first NHS hospital.
“That is an insaneee song title” 😂

Best album opening EVER. First 30 seconds is electrifying and grips you for the entirety of the album
27:16 it’s hitting! 👀 This album is still so damn good! Love your energy. 😍
‘ Morrissey , ya gotta chill “….. ha ha. Lovely reaction. You felt it fella. When you danced around during Cemetry Gates I was in stitches. “ This is life saving music” Indeed.
hey man loved your video, i reckon youd probably like the cure theyre kinda similar to the smiths, their album disintegration is a 10/10
If you love "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" then check out "Here's Where The Story Ends" by the Sundays. It has EXACTLY the same Vibe, speed and energy!!! I couldn't believe it when I found that song.
agreed!! l
That song and “Wild Horses” made me fall in love with the Sunday’s 🥲
Yep. The Sundays singer is like a female Morrissey.
Ha love how Johnny Marr hits your soul.
Love this album it just hits different!

There isn't a bad Smiths song. Every single song is either great or a masterpiece. Not many artists can say that.
bro , second time i listen to this! EPIC Morrissey is so angelic Thanks to you. Brother.
The last minute of "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. That guitar, my God!
I think my favorite Smiths song is whichever one I've just listened to 😅

I can agree on Shankly and Vicar, but Some Girls 😅 Whew. You guys couldn't be more wrong! 😂
IMO some girls is one of the best, I also like Frankly Mr shankly a lot, my biggest Hot take is that Big mouth is the song that I second like the least from the whole album
Do fans of the smiths just agree that golden lights suck?
If you liked "I Know It's Over", do yourself a favor and listen to the "Rank" live version of the song from 1986 - in my opinion, it's perhaps the best live version of any song ever.
You seem to be letting it loose and getting into this shit, I'm here for it. Salute.
The Smiths is hands down one of the best acts in music history and I don't care if anyone disagrees because that's the T. ❤
Fantastic reaction. So honest and passionate.
Well the Queen is Dead is one of the best albums ever. Knock this one out :) Johnny Marr's guitar is incendiary ;)
