Glenn brings up acoustic treatment a bit here and has been harping on it for years. He's definitely not wrong though. It is way more important than people in general give it credit for. Thanks to Glenn harping on it for ages I took it to heart when building and finishing my band's practice/recording space. Framed out the walls, put in acoustic absorbing insulation, put mass loaded vinyl between the studs and the drywall, more insulation in the ceiling joists and finished that off as well. The room echoed like hell but no sound escaped. That was part one done. Part two was putting in bass traps, hanging sound absorption blankets on the walls and installing sound absorption panels on the ceiling. Now, that room is very quiet, some have said it's kind of eerie even. The sound deadening properties of that room are such that if you walk from the room next door and into the band room you can actually hear the difference in volume reduction. Glad I listened to Glenn on that one.
It also keeps the neighbors from calling the cops when we have band practice.

I've added a bit of sound treatment to my home studio and plan to build more panels and bass traps soon, and yes, it is a big help for not a ton of money if you have basic DIY skills (ability to use a saw, drill, utility knife, and a staple gun for the fabric basically). I also did a lot of recording tests on my drums in different parts of my basement recording space, as well as in my living room and master bedroom, which are the only other two rooms in my house drums wouldn't completely overwhelm.
The results were interesting, as the same kit with the same mics in different rooms and even different parts of the same room sounded very different. I held onto those tests and may record some tracks upstairs in my living room at some point because the ceiling is taller than the basement and the drums sounded KILLER in there. The basement is way more convenient though, and will probably sound just as good once I add some more treatment.

Pro Tools user here. 25 years in. I love Harrison MixBuss! They have a great team and their "sonic" algorithm which is supposed to mimic their consoles sounds killer...it's a mild color. Logic is pretty awesome too. It really shines on midi instruments otherwise it's a DAW like any other. I use Pro Tools because my community of musicians and filmmakers use it and I have teacher/technician certifications so I get it for free. Sending good vibes for you and your wife. Besides, there’s way more evidence that shows pickups don’t matter than evidence that shows the contrary. You are wrong. Pickups don’t matter past humbucker vs single coil. You’re a victim of marketing. Sorry, but just because a spec sheet says something, doesn’t mean it’s true even in the slightest. The people who peddle these lies are the ones selling you pickups. No shit someone is going to lie to you if it means you buy their product. This has been how marketing works as long as we’ve had a capitalist society. Even in the trading days people would lie their heads off to benefit. The guitar sales rep isn’t going to tell you the truth. Neither is Seymour Duncan. Neither are the guitar companies who ask for $200 more for the same guitar with different pickups. You’re falling for a lie, hopefully one day you’ll accept the truth, but that comes after denial. Which is the stage you’re in. You already invested that money into something that doesn’t matter so you’re trying to gaslight yourself into thinking it was worth it, when in reality you know in your heart you wasted your money. Pickups are about noise. Not tone.

I'm a PC guy personally, I prefer it to Apple and I've never really had a problem with it (doing my own demo recordings and TH-cam videos though, not a commercial studio), but that's just a preference thing. I completely understand why people love Apple! That's the beauty of recording music these days, you have options! Prefer Windows? Go Windows. Prefer Apple? Use Apple. If it works for you it's right. I don't understand why people get defensive about their choice in OS (obviously ignoring light ribbing and jokes between friends).

In regards to acoustic treatment back in the day we did also other things to get better sound, we used to put the fender RAD amp on a pillow for better bass, or put bass amp in the corner of room, sometimes facing in to get the bassy reflections. If recording in a rehearsal room we had two wood things on wheels, one side would be ceramic tiled, the other side had carpet tiles. If an amp had bad mids or highs but limited EQ knobs we would cover with a t shirt. Lots you can do for cheap with every day things, like hanging thick curtains on the walls.

In regards to reverb on guitars, one trick I have used in the past is to add reverb to the delay in the mix (and not the direct guitar signal), but, don’t put the reverb in line with the delay, use an aux out from the delay return, and add the reverb, HPF the input to the reverb, (I tend to go for harsher plate reverbs for this , Yamaha Sox and REV series plates work pretty well), and then do a high boost/low cut EQ on the reverb output, sort of around 800 to 2k (where exactly depends on the song, not super radical, but the idea is to make it more harsh than smooth). Add the reverb to the mix until you can only just hear it against the isolated guitar and delay in the mix, then go back to the full mix. For me this makes the delay ‘pop’ a little bit more in the mix, and I can then back it off a little more, and get the feel of the delay without it being as high in the mix.
It doesn’t work every time, but, if you are having trouble getting the guitar delay to sit in the mix, it can often work

Hi Glenn, here’s another RME fan boy. No, not really but do OWN and have worked a RME Babyface (the original one with the stupid break out cable…) still satisfied with it. But more to the point: it still Works flawless although I was still in Mac OS 9 (or even 8? Can’t remember). So the switch to OSX in PowerPC, to Intel and now to M2 was always instant and easy. When my break out cable failed last year (bought the Babyface in 2011) I could just buy a new one. I am very sure the Antelope is a great machine with outstanding performance, lot of options and a great price. But The well deserved reputation of RME’s support of legacy products and their drivers is a real thing. Not ‘yet to be found out in the future’ or based in hype in my humble opinion. The price for an RME Digiface Dante and two Ferrofish Dante Pulse 16’s is about the same as the Antelope here in Europe. I agree with your assessment that the Antelope has more input/output options, their OWN plug-ins and it’s all in 1 machine. The Ferrofish has all it’s in- and outputs on jacks so that’s something to consider as well. For me one Ferrofish would be more than enough as I mix in the box. Wish I could afford a Neve desk… just saying the is an option to go RME/Ferrofish for similar investment. The full RME options are indeed very expensive! But we’ll have to wait and see if the Germans from Antelope are as gründlich and punktlig as their colleages of RME. Enyoy your channel, keep up the Good work!

Hey Glenn! So I now have a couple of questions that I've been trying to figure out myself to no avail:
    1. Is the Macbook Air M1 a viable option for recording music and using plugins? I'm choosing this version of MacBook specifically because it's the only one I can afford right now.
    2. Is there any laptop (not Mac) that can rival the price of any other versions of MacBook Air (M2 or M3) that is equally powerful at the same task or even better for the same price or cheaper?
    3. What would you recommend as an option for baritone guitar pickups (intended for high-gain use, of course) that don't break the bank? I'm having trouble with mine since they squeal like a pig as soon as I run the slightest amount of distortion or gain on my amp, and it is even somewhat noticeable on clean settings as well.
Also, everyone else is welcome to contribute, this question is not only for Glenn.

Oh also about the antelope galaxy thing yeah valid. Hope it continues to go well for you! I just can’t recommend them to people from my friend’s experiences. I also had people say that the plugs in weren’t as good as the UAD stuff. With many plugins with UAD being native as well (with often no differences) I’d love to see you do some comparisons. Or even grab an Apollo to show the differences. I think where antelope is winning in the market now is an affordable interface with tons of converters. But for many people it has no preamps, so it’s almost designed for a studio with a console.

GLENNNN. Had an encounter on another channel. I had to share. The video was about why Les Paul players wrap their string around the tailpiece, and how the break angle and pole pieces touching the body increase sustain yadda yadda. Found this gem:
Comment - "Some guy on TH-cam used an oscilloscope testing the the same pickups/harness in different bodies and the differences were indiscernible....much to the chargrin of the "tone woods" officionados, I'm sure.. Your tests prove that unless you need a 28 second note over a 26 second note you're basically spinning your wheels.
Response - "So the scope sees the primary wave form and your ear hears all the harmonics and we are supposed to believe the scope can discern subtle differences. Audiophiles and techs enter the same battle. Tech says all capacitors with the same value are identical and interchangeable while anyone with a decent ear can clearly hear differences. Same with cables, harnesses, pickups tones woods. Which is better? Thats on you. Its like saying all wines taste the same because they are made from grapes."

The M chips and restarting guitar this year landed me with apple again as well. I didn't have many windows related technical issues for decades and I had more stress with Apples ecosystem than every other because Apple decides what and how you do it and how much you owe them for it. A third option, especially when you are on a very tight budget and rely on hardware that is out of production for a while - always remember there is also Linux and it doesn't have the typical latency issues Windows notoriously has either.

I will be one to admit I got hot on that PC take... but I can also get over it.
I've used every OS, been doing recording and live sound for over 30 years. Never had any issues on PC, not a single blue screen, zero downtime. Then I asked myself... why do I care what Glenn's experience is? If he can't get his PC to aggregate devices... or even just run without BSOD... how does that affect me, at all?
Some of us get in our feelings, but then we also ask ourselves, "why did I do that?" 🤣

If you're building a new studio on your land, Glenn, have you considered digging out a bunker space for studio and keeping the garden/yard on top? Depends how big your land is around the property, obviously. Some companies will tunnel under your house too and install supports.

I'm a bit excited that you're planning on looking into the Kahler trems and compare them with the Floyd Roses. There's only one TH-camr that I can think of who's done that and those videos are super old and quite grainy in quality. I don't like the feel of the Floyd, and every once in a while I wonder if I should get a Kahler. That said, finding a guitar with a Kahler in my area is almost impossible. So I would have to shop online, and it's likely going to be used of variable quality it seems

Looking forward to the Kahler thing. Have yet to try one myself despite wanting to for decades, but it seems like such an over-hated trem/vibrato system when all of the engineering seems sound and the actual legit musicians who've used them professionally during and since the 80s (who presumably have had them installed and set up properly) didn't seem to have the same issues that the average online guitar forum knuckle-dragging cork sniffers do.
Would not be surprised if most of the hate comes from people who couldn't be bothered to learn how to set them up properly and the rest from people who freak out about any wood being removed from a guitar after the initial period where the wood needed to be removed from the guitar to actually make it into a guitar.

as a Logic Pro and Reaper user - Logic Pro works great for basically anything right out of the box. You fine tune it, and I feel it's much more intuitive with certain routing methods and the midi functions are far superior. But Reaper is the epitome of PC's - it's barebones until you turn it into what you want it to be. I enjoy Reaper, although Logic Pro is my home.
I would argue the Logic price tag is easily justified by the integration of Apple's sound libraries and plugins. It is incredible what you get and how good the baked in plugins are.
I would also like to state the Carvin V3's value and versatility. I don't think you can beat it for the price, albeit they're all used.

MY issue with getting acoustic treatment is my room is TINY (less than 2m wide and maybe 3-4m long). it's all I have to work with and it's far from ideal. Yamaha HS7s basically in the corner with a window behind them. The room isn't a proper rectangle, but all the walls are straight. All I have been able to do is set up acoustic foam at the first reflection points, put a little bit of foam on one the wall behind me and hang up my jackets on the door which is also behind me. Any tips? Thanks Glenn

Yo Glen, been a fan for a good while now and I have a question regarding brutal death metal, a subgenre of death metal. You’re obviously very well experienced in recording metal and getting clear, but still powerful sounding mixes. What do/would you do in the case where a band comes in wanting a much gnarlier sound for a brutal death metal mix? Take the albums “Trading Pieces” by Deeds of Flesh or “Effigy of The Forgotten” by Suffocation for example. If a band came into your studio wanting their songs to sound as dirty as that, would you assist them in getting a similar sound? Or would it go against your values as an audio engineer? Much love bro, curious as to how you’d respond to this question!

Yeah I like the audient evo16. That said, mines in for repair for a second time. Which is bit of a worry. Seems like there might be a bit of an overheating issue as it seems like the specific issue (occasionally goes crazy with a high pitch 'scream' sound) turns up a lot on audients forums. So yeah... Hopefully audient figures it out in a firmware revision. Which is a shame, because its a beautiful sounding inferface. Those pres are just great.
