    Honestly, you could make a whole Gen II series just based around Pokemon with or without the Rollout TM. It's such a gamechanger.

      Agree!
      I never had seen the potential of this move until I started playing challenge runs (nuzlockes e.g.) and changing my gamestyle into longer fights with set-up strats. I look at you, Emerald Azumarill!
      It's ability Huge Power + setting up Defense Curls to sweep through even harder battles felt so satisfacting :-D

      I've debated this for a long time doing and watching playthroughs on youtube. Gen 1 and 2 runs are impacted massively by pokemon that learn bodyslam in gen 1, and pokemon that learn rollout in gen 2, and also the ubiquitous nature of return. I can't tell if the moves should be banned or not for myself. A series doing gen 1 and 2 with bodyslam tm and return tm banned would fascinate me.

      There's basically four tiers
      1. Gets the elemental punches
      2. Gets rollout and defence curl
      3. Gets rollout
      4. Everything else

    I love the swing from "completely destroyed in this battle" to "a complete sweep by koffing" in a few of these battles. Really shows just how important the right move is.

    Koffing and Weezing (the original Kanto forms), mean the absolute world to me. They had such cool designs to me (such a lovely shade of purple) with all the gasses and everything. I also had a few different trading cards of Weezing and especially koffing of the first few original sets of the pokemon TCG, and those mons just bring me back to far happier times. I also had for many, many years a rule in every single playthrough of Pokemon that I did. That rule was that I had to use at least one poison type Pokemon. This was long before fairy types, and was due solely to me liking the typing and somehow thinking that poison types were able to better use the status poison. Koffing and Weezing usually took that poison type slot if they were obtainable. Also, in pokemon go, I tried for a few years to get a shiny Kanto Weezing with good stats, and I managed to get a shiny, near perfect stats, and purified Weezing that I gave a third move and got it to best buddy rank. That specific pokemon is special to me. Also, to me personally Koffing and Weezing has extremely cool move sets with attacks like toxic, flamethrower, and explosion. Long story short, I love seeing Koffing in any and all forms, so that you for making my day by making this video.

    I just realized something... you forgot to say hello to Denis. I really like the new layout and listing format change. Makes the results way more easier to comprehend. I get the feeling Ground is only as useful as it is because the Steel Type is so heavily shown through Magnemite and Steelix with Jasmine. I wonder when Hidden Power Fire is ever going to get any use...

    Mmh.. perhaps Koffing getting frozen so often is a reference to really cold temperatures being able to contain viruses for millennia; Koffing is really just striving to make us learn things even when it's doing a speedrun; so thoughtful.

  • @resonae17
    @resonae17 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Thanks for going in depth on why you considered banning hidden power. When you first mentioned it the idea seemed really bizarre because I never really payed much attention to it in any video outside of guessing the type at the beginning.
    I think the discrepancy comes from my expectations of the video, essentially I already know that you've done a complete video and it goes all the way to Red and there's a second run with improvements, and those are the things I look forward to. The other factor is the editing, the sections with really obvious outcomes are skipped and everything that's been shown a lot in past videos are trimmed down a lot.
    So when you're doing the motions in mid game Johto, it being quick and uneventful is the expectation, and I've never really thought "man it would be so much more interesting if he struggled against Chuck and Jasmine more".
    All that said this video has convinced me that the second run only method is fantastic, seeing the slot machine in a speed run is just hilarious.

    Hmm, well there are less powerful Psychic types to worry about and Koffing has access to slightly more type diversifying moves here (Flamethrower, Rollout, Thief, Hidden Power) than in Gen 1, so I think Koffing has better chances here. I look forward to the results.
    5:34 - An yet still somehow not the worse move that exists given Constrict is a thing. Smog also has a real lengthy attack animation for it as well, so even if it does hit, it takes an eternity for it to hit. An yes, I too would also take on Sprout Tower before Falkner, every single time!
    8:07 - Always did like the Week Siblings concept; it was a fun surprise stumbling upon them for the first time, particularly as a kid.
    11:19 - Ghost types resisting Poison is certainly one of the rarer type interactions I feel. Poison types are generally one of my preferred types and I even I forget about this fact.
    14:24 - It certainly helps that text-boxes go by much quicker than cutscenes with shifting camera angles and expression pauses. Poor Hop; he has an unfortunate legacy.
    18:17 - Koffee is the unstoppable rolling poisonous puffball of doom! Surprising but entertaining to witness Rollout manage to take out a Steel type so easily and then steamroll through the entire rival's team. It seems Koffee's poor accuracy wasn't an issue here.
    24:36 - Scott's Thoughts truly fell onto hard times here, succumbing to the urge to gamble. To be fair with your luck based opposition to relying on the gambling, your plan is to use Fire Blast, which with it's accuracy, already feels like you're going a luck based route. I wouldn't have considered Koffing a gambling themed Pokémon but I guess Koffee is here.
    30:24 - Oh my gosh; Karen potion stalled you. The fiend! An hey, your prediction of Karen causing Koffee to reset was correct.
    34:32 - Agreed, particularly given that Pewter City has the fossil showcasing museum, so it feels perfectly fitting for Brock to use the fossil Pokémon in his team.
    48:44 - A strange case of being both very unlucky followed by very lucky played out here... or in the latter Hitmonchan's case, just the computer being a bit dumb. Hilarious to witness though.

    Fun fact, Rapidash, a pokemon you would expect to be quite fast, isn't actually among the fastest pokemon. Its not even in the top 10 in gen 1, with gen 2 introducing another 6 to outspeed to not quite rapid fire horse. Rapidash is tied for 11th in gen 1 and 17th in gen 2.

    Gen 2 encourages the use of a few OP strategies. Hidden power isnt really an issue, if you wanted to ban easy answers you'd probably have to ban rollout, return, and curse which just sounds like torture in what is the longest and least varied of the pokemon generations.

      @@Religion0 I definitely agree. However, What’s the catalyst for the fire and what’s the conductor for the electricity? Fire needs a heat source so does it just heat it’s own gas. I guess koffing would have to literally be made of carbon being it’s the only gas that’s noxious in high quantities, can ignite, and produce electricity? But carbon generally has to be powdered to combust so idk. I’m not sure there’s really a good explanation.

    Runs without hidden power are 100% more interesting. It’s so much more entertaining to see you have to overcome obstacles to find a way to progress instead of a single move covering your biggest roadblocks. Also I think that not using hidden power is more representative of the Pokémon that your using and it’s strengths and weaknesses. Regardless love your videos, I’ll be looking forward to becoming a member!

      It also means that there can be a hidden second tier; Pokémon that are that good naturally and Pokémon that need Hidden Power to become that good. It’s similar to the Double Team move: if you need it, you suck. Unlike Double Team, if you need Hidden Power, you just have a bad movepool.

  • @zenitfan4life
    @zenitfan4life ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dear Scott, thank you for another gem! Couple of things I would like to weigh in on:
    1. I am in complete agreement regarding your approach to Hidden Power going forward. It will be extremely interesting to see how Pokemon with very limited movesets would prevail against formidable foes such as Jasmine and Claire without Hidden Power Ground & Ice in the back of their pockets in their first playthroughs. And what difference the Hidden Power TM would make for them.
    2. Regarding this particular game, you could have sold the Charcoal which, to my surprise to this day, costs $9800 while other type boosting held items only cost $50 or $100. I see the reasoning why you would want to hold on to it to boost Fire Blast's effective power (not sure if it actually affected any damage ranges), but perhaps if in your future playthroughs where you will have to save money for another, non-Fire Blast item, you will remember that Charcoal can be sold for $9800 and it can save you a bunch of time.

  • @shanoc5902
    @shanoc5902 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Gym 1's Pidgeotto used gust instead of mud-slap against a poison type? Interesting, that suggests that basically only electric types will ever have to worry about both of the birds using Mud-slap due to being weak to ground *and* resisting flying. Though for them, they can probably get through gym 1 pretty quickly. Still, it's nice to see a small boon for the other ground-weak types in gen 2, as Yellow version is basically all about how well you can deal with ground types. Hopefully that won't be the case in Crystal as well!
    Edit: If I had to guess, I imagine Return doesn't bother you as much is because Return doesn't really 'solve problems'. While it's a powerful move that can be a bit centralizing, the only 'problem' that it really solves is a pokemon having a terrible moveset where they don't have any good moves, at which point you're probably suffering and (relatively) miserable during the playthrough anyway so it's just a breath of fresh air. Hidden Power on the other-hand removes a lot of the fun and creativity that you may explore, like getting Fire-blast here which isn't something you'd even think about before and has you learning something new about these games you love. Hidden Power turns basically all road-blocks into a question of "Are you a physical attacker or special attacker?" and then using HP Ground or HP Ice as a result. While return probably just saves you time grinding as the power it gives you could always be achieved by gaining another 10 or 20 levels.

    I honestly think that Explosion should be allowed. Barely anything learns it and it's a big part of some pokemon's identities. It would be something like TM32 rule in gen 1 - don't teach Explosion but if a pokemon gets it - it's fair game.

    Hi Scott, great video as always. I wanted to tell you that if you ever need to gamble in gen 2's game corner ever again you should use the lucky slot machine in either of the two game corners. There's a video by a person called Crystal_ called "Pokemon G/S/C - A look at the inner-workings of slot machines" you could look up for more details.

    Well I'm sold on the hidden power change. I feel like it works either way, but it was really amusing watching you gamble with coins to get Koffing fire blast before Jasmine. Hidden power also does give pokemon a way around some of the hardest fights in the game (Jasmine, Claire, and Lance) when they would otherwise really struggle there, so its certainly interesting to see playthroughs without it. It does seem like ground and ice are just far and away the best hidden powers for 90% of pokemon in this game, which can be a bit boring, so I understand why you feel like its more interesting without the tm.

    Hey Scott. Love your videos. Just to mention it. If you ever gamble for a tm in goldenrod again: there is one machine which is easier to win at. Try to look it up. Normally an nps sits before it but on special days he doesn't. Could speed up getting enough coins. Keep going what you do and if you mention it in a video I would love, that you give a shout out to the best eeveelution Umbreon!

    Koffing got a better time in crystal then in yellow, that's nice to have a strong poison move like sludge bomb. 💪
    I really like Koffing's back sprite, I like how silly it's smile is. 😋I can't imagine how it's using curse (because the Japanese name of that move is noroi, which is like a cruse of bad luck) 🤔.. But anyways cruse and protect, and leftovers are the best to use, especially for a physical attacker like Koffing.
    And as for hidden power, I think that from a point of a speedrun, that's okay to use, because it's like the gen 1's mimic in my opinion. For me as causal player, I wouldn't try to use it, because I want the game to be harder for me. So thanks for showing both of the approaches. Watching Koffing one shoting Koga's team with non stab fire blast, was really fun. 😂

    I agree both that Hidden Power patches moveset issues a bit too much and that it adds enough depth to the playthrough to not be an obvious ban. The current in-between solution is really good.

    The Game Corner has ways to increase consistency. IIRC a certain machine has a "Super Luck Mode" where when its in it, you win once every three spins. So its really easy to get into it with resetting.

    Hey Scott! Great video as usual! :) Just a little tip if you'll ever need to go to the casino again for some coins. If you go to the last slot machines at the right of the casino, you'll find another game which is much faster and easier to get the coins you need. You just need to "cheat" using the saving states of the emulator, but I'm pretty sure it will take you much less time than the regular slot machines 😉

    I have not watched it yet, but I do want to say that I am a believer in selfdestruct moves, and would definitely consider them valid. Firstly, it's part of a pokemon's identity and the moves aren't broken or overpowered imo. Secondly, whilst the user faint, it can win a battle doing so if used on the last pokemon, giving THEM the solo victory nontheless.
    So if thou decides to start using thy moves, thou hast my blessing!
    I'd actually think i'd be funny to have an alomst guarantee K.O. against everyone's Ace.

There are probably a lot of hidden items I never found (I've seen some in these videos that I wasn't aware of) but I think I've found almost everything in the first five gens on my own (barring really convoluted acquisition methods). Comes with talking to everyone possible for the most part. XD

    Scott I can see why you changed it, but I really liked the old stats placement because it put Atk next to SpA and Def next to SpD, which was useful for instantly understanding at a glance why certain moves are preferable, and other analogous situations. I'm sure you considered this though and just prefered the consistency with the enemy overlay. In any case, hi Denis.

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is why I did it like that before. The comment that made me change it was that someone who was colour blind struggle to relate it to the enemy stats on the other side of the screen. Speed really has to be at the bottom of that list so I changed it on the left side to accommodate.

    the little fella did very well, I thought it'd be so much worse, back down in the Bruno tier like in Yellow, imagine how good Weezing might be. I like what you're doing with HP, it can be a game changer for some Pokemon and you show that very well. I had a thought of a run you could try for Emerald (or Fire Red) Kecleon. the stats are nothing special (although the spc Def is quite good) similar to Hypno (Hypno in Gen 3 is awesome as well BTW) but its ability is unique and you'd have a lot of fun with it, it changes its type to whatever move last hit it.

    With your signature use of Damage Rounding Thresholds, you should really make a T-shirt featuring that Koffing with the anime eyes. With text underneath reading "Playing DRT", since it can be read as "dirty", in reference to the Sludge and Smog moves. Kind of an in-joke.

  • @lopeden
    @lopeden ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly I feel like he should let himself use Self destruct, its a core aspect of the pokemon, so making it so that he literally cant use it, the pokemon has it as a level move. Not using it just makes the run more generic, and being able to kamikaze the last pokemon is exactly how this little dude is supposed to be used. I get that its a solo pokemon run, but it just feels wrong to not let the dude use what is clearly a signature move of the line because of the solo pokemon rules, in this case. Learning it by TM for a strategy would be stupid and make the runs more generic, but this actually makes this little guy interesting, instead of a little sad ball of gas that poisons things, maybe, sometimes.

    Love you videos, I watch them all. I will say hidden power does take away from these runs for me. It takes away the different hurdles in the game that each different pokemon gets and the unique ways they can overcome them. To me it's like Tm for double team.
    For most pokemon even the "bad ones" only have one or two places in the run that they truely struggle with. It is different for every pokemon. Using hidden power to get over that hump takes away some of the interest.
    Just my thoughts.
