  • Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan joins 'Squawk Box' to discuss his decision to write an op-ed to UPenn's student newspaper criticizing university president Elizabeth Magill and board of trustees chair Scott Bok over a Palestinian literary festival held last month, fighting antisemitism on college campuses, rising tensions following the Israel-Hamas war, the double standard in the exercise of free speech, and more. The environment on college campuses recently has become truly deranged. I hope this shines a light on the profound ethical failure and hypocrisy happening on campuses today, and has been targeting decent people for years. The behavior of students and faculty is becoming blatantly unacceptable, and I think everyone is noticing it now.

It’s the hypocrisy for me. College campuses have consistently silenced anyone to the right of Hillary Clinton and branded them a fascist. Taken overtly political stances. But when someone attacks their lack of taking a moral stance on this issue like they have many others they coat themselves in the veneer of free speech, of which they themselves despise.

Unfortunately a lot that is tyranny country sponsored. Look at funding. When China's daughter attends Harvard, you have to know what may be happening there. 3rd party oversight needs to happen.I am not for censorship to be candid. I want to see these people. And until we hold social media accountable for fake accounts that ran into the millions spreading that hate at scale, we are screwed. I agree with him in that this is at the leadership level. And that leadership is not providing moral guidance. If a CEO said.. hey I want LGBT to be executed, we would rightfully remove them.

@@JosephLovesMoviesI don't consider myself on the left anymore but I am a 1st amendment even if I can't stand what you are saying as individuals you have the right to do so, but I also believe that others have a right to have a open debate, criticize or disagree with what someone says and I think we agree with each other here, however I do believe that people who are in roles of leadership have obligation to consider all views especially as touching as this subject. I agree with what he said that the university of Florida leaders took yes we can have political discussions about issues pertaining to these countries later but right now as families are mourning as people lives are turned upside down and as many hurt now is the time to condemn any acts of terrorism against any people whether we agree with them or not. I actually do feel for the Palestinians people and think that there is lots of room for discussion about land and such but what Hamas did is simply wrong and not just wrong it was purely evil and for everyone who was affected directly or indirectly my heart goes to you I and most good decent people agree that they are nothing more than monsters and the planet and humanity can do without those types of people. He is watching in real time a pre kristalnacht situation emerging -- and he has the self awareness, and the willingness, to put himself out there to take heat and say something. My recommendation is to do what I did. Three years ago, my alma mater (Grinnell College in Iowa) elected to make a hefty contribution to BLM, which to me is nothing but a hate organization. I expressed my dismay at the time to the leadership of the college. BLM has a long history of antisemitism and over a third of the students at Grinnell now, as when I was there, are Jewish (although I am not). I pointed out to college leadership how tone deaf their decision was. Obviously, my thoughts on the subject were rejected, and the contribution was made. It was then that I decided to never make another donation to the school. There are many wonderful charities out there that need money. One of them is now getting the money that I had previously earmarked for Grinnell Collge.

STOP equating support for the Palestinian people with support for Hamas!!!! It's NOT the same. In fact half the world sides with the Palestinian people and the other half with Israel. It's not confined to a few students at a University. Supporting innocent Palestinians is NOT antisemitic!! That's just plain wrong.

Well, good for you Mr rowan. I must ask, why did it take a massacre to get you here? Alot of people need to ask themselves some hard questions. Cause I believe they are kidding themselves about the truth.

I understand your hurt and feel for Israel’s struggles. You are certainly entitled to withhold donations. But i find your attempt to strong-arm an university to align with your moral views may have unintended consequences. Apollo preaching to UPenn about morality and ethics, I find that interesting. In any event, I am sorry about the events at Israel, and wish you and Israel peace and security.

Anti Semitic is simply two words. One is Semitic, meaning Jewish. One is anti. Not really a crazy term. It’s like anti white, anti trans, anti male, what ever you want.

People explaining Israel’s oppression of Palestine is not the same thing as antisemitism, and this guy is bringing up the situation with Hamas up like it’s related to some sort of campus activity. And I don’t understand why you couldn’t say happy indigenous’s peoples day as a way of acknowledging Columbus’s crimes and still be shocked by what happened and sympathetic?

Sympathies to you Marc and those affected by the attacks last week. The issue is not morally clear, you can’t cherry pick in a vacuum. Israel has treated Palestinians like subhumans for decades. You can’t expect any human to be treated that way, confined to a cage, water and electricity denied will before this last week, and for them to be okay with it. Netanyahu has never been an advocate for actual peace.
