    This shop is almost a reason to move to Tokyo....
    The scope of the tamiya production is really amazing.

      no, its not... sorry it is a let down compared to the Singapore or the actual store front at the Tamiya headquarters which is not in Tokyo.

    I remember walking into my first Lego shop as a kid and being completely dumbfounded/overwhelmed by all the shelves full of Lego kits. Now as an adult its the same going into model shops like that and Andy's.

      Yeah, this video is somewhat overwhelming particularly with endlessly repeating muzak without narration. I wish one of the staff came over to tell us some things about the store and the company.

    Tamiya are without doubt my favourite model company. Every kit I have built by them has been a pure dream. The ease of construction, the quality and crispness of their moulds. All exemplary. My next project will be their F4u1 Corsair in 1/32 scale, which I’m really looking forward to. I’m just hoping and praying that they do my favourite aircraft, Grumman’s F8F Bearcat in 1/32 scale. That would be a dream come true for me.

    • @TheDom277
      @TheDom277 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Same for me. Well them and Meng. Their kits you can pretty much throw up in the air and they come down built. Their kits are as crisp as they come as well. 👍

      @mariotreglia4066 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yup, Tamiya is off the apex, so to speak…
      In most of their kits you barely need cement, the parts fix together perfectly.

      My first Tamiya I bought was at a convenience store, one of those snap together mini cars that run on double a batteries. One of the cooling things I encountered as a kid.

    Notice how the Tamiya tank model makers style of painting for static model without diorama scene is basically to do no weathering at all, except a little subtle to scale dry brush on edges highlights, and they really look really amazing without the mud ,filters worn out exhaust rust, or rusty tracks ect .This minimalist style that really works , makes you focus on the model and not the after effects of the weathering products available .

    • @joeshmoe9978
      @joeshmoe9978 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've heard that there are two types of models, artistic and realistic. I agree with Tamiya's realistic approach. They don't look like they just drove out of an oil painting.

    • @randomnickify
      @randomnickify ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I think it's the style preference of the shop owners. It shows the model in a way that can be built by a "normal" person. Revel does the same with their presentation models.

    • @davidcole333
      @davidcole333 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I know it comes down to the personal taste of the modeler, but I'm not a huge fan of overdoing the weathering, unless it's needed to fit into the diorama. I think the Tamiya modelers have it just about right....although to not put ANY mud/dirt on a tank is a bit of a stretch.

      Tony Greenland had said that he modeled military vehicles, not the country that they operated in. The same goes for too much gradation or highlighting, It's not a Warhammer figure..

    Oh a dream place to be, like a kid in a candy store "Hey look at that! I'll have six of those, two of those, a box of those and one of the shirts"....but not the hat.

    NEVER expected to see you in Japan!!! I am so jealous, but very happy for you!!!
    TAMIYA Headquarters is DEFINITELY a place to go if you are a hobbyist!!!
    I am planning on going to Japan in the winter next year. Right now I am building a Tamiya 1/48th scale F-4B Phantom, and a 1/35th scale German Leopard2 Main Battle Tank. Once finished, I will be taking photographs of my work and taking them with me to Japan. I will be showing my work to the employees at Tamiya when I go visit them.
    Enjoy your trip in Japan!!!!

      Theres still two in Portsmouth who have been here for a number of years. Two have started up and folded in the town centre, which like many towns, rows of boarded up shops, save for Betting, charity, phones, pound shops, and Primark. Theres one near where i live in Drayton, just outside Portsmouth, hes shut Weds and half Sat, but dunno how he manages, nobody ever goes in.

    • @antonyeastham4564
      @antonyeastham4564 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnnyRocker2162 Aye. It's niche hobby but I think it's for older men mostly, (few women modellers but not many), who have rediscovered it. Airfix have a quick build range but I really think that is to appeal to the younger generation who have shorter attention spans. Technology has given them instant gratification so taking time with a project isnt as acceptable as it once was for my generation. Even I watch a lot of TH-cam so an online shop for models rather than a dedicated consumer premises in a large town does seem the better option. Shame really. It's nice to browse and rediscover stuff. The target consumer has changed I think too, from teens to adults over the years. I never had the same kind of hobby my dad had. Times change.

      Limited lines to browse in the States: Hobby Lobby or Michael’s. The local hobby shop is disappearing, and usually needs gaming for support. Quick builds are needed, but kids and young people go to War Thunder and DCS instead.
      Just being in an aisle of a Hobby Lobby (not an employee) I was asked about easy models to get 2 kids. Did the best with what was there.

    That red Lamborghini kit on the left at 16:44 was my first Tamiya kit way back in 1988, and I've been a fan ever since. What got me over the years is how there's never a mis-aligned kit with warped parts that require filler, and how on every kit every last part fits cleanly exactly where it's supposed to. Throw in their acrylic paints that blew away Testors and the others, and I've become quite the brand loyalist with Tamiya.

    If I was Tamiya and designing that store I'd have some professional modeler in a glassed in workshop building various kits and demonstrating techniques. At our nearby art museum which has some of the finest Japanese art on display they imported a Japanese sword master to make swords in a recreated ancient sword workshop. Makes it all come alive. It's one of my reasons for not building car models, most of the time they just sit there, not in a diorama to tell a story. (yes I could make a diorama of a car, but it's not the norm). It's how I started watching the channel, was watching Andy building dioramas, which is what I most enjoy building too, plus the story part of it (researching it, and figuring out how to convey that story).

Kits are dirt cheap in Japan - you're talking 30% - 40% less than the US. I picked up the Stug IIIB, 1/48 Hien, and 1/32 Type 21 Zero for less than $100 US!

    "Tamiya" dioramas have always had such a great look. Fun fact: Shep Paine started doing dioramas for Tamiya in the 70's but he wasn't asked to do any further work after complaints about a diorama where he placed a Flak 88 inside a bombed out church.

    What a toy store. Take my money! Did they have and Francois Verlinden diorama's in the store? His dioramas were always in the Tamiya catalogues. Couldn't see if any of the German armoured vehicle's had zimmerit on them. I used to religiously but the Tamiya catalogue every year. I loved all the line work drawings they had in them. I got into they're RC cars. I built myself the super champ buggy. Then My uncle bought my nephew a second hand Tamiya RC buggy. He asked me to rebuild it for my cousin. I rebuilt it to match my super champ as I had gone to a poly body.
    It turns out that a regular in his pub, was a big cheese at the UK distributor for Tamiya. I got to meet him after building my cousin the first 4wd Tamiya buggy (can't think of the name of it but I saw it on the shelf in you vid. He gave me the official Tamiya RC car bag and cap. I was so happy.

    Could stare at Tamiya box art all day.......and always thought Francois Verlinden did the best dioramas. He could make the flesh look like it would bleed and didn't over weather everything which I think is a fault very common these days.

    That was amazing, thanks Andy for the vidio, i could spend all day in there, it makes me sad that here in the UK we don't have so many model shops now, most off it is done online.

    Wow, that's Tamiya heaven. I'm more partial to the R/C stuff, but there have just about anything and everything Tamiya. If I ever get a chance to visit, that would be one of my stops for sure!

    Wonderful video, I'm hell jealous right now. I was kind of hoping the store was _at_ the factory and you might get a tour through, ngl that would have made my week.
