Excellent summary of how to add extra Freon to the XC90. I like how you also double checked certain items: max air flow, correct Freon Type and that the A/C clutch was engaged on the A/C compressor. Thank you for making and sharing this video.
I really do appreciate your help with filling the xc90 . The reason I will be doing it instead of the shop is because we already brought it in 3 times , past 3 summers now . it must have a slow leak somewhere and with Prices upwards to 300.00 for the diagnostic , full flush and computer aided filler many shops use , its just not cost effective for us to bring it in again with our slow leak. I have maintained my 2010 XC90 3.2 ... so damn expensive. Once I get my car back it will be over $5000 in the past year. Struts, control arm, ball joints, battery, srs sensor, clock spring/steering wheel angle sensor, fuel pressure sensor, break pads/rotors, tires, crankshaft case pully, a/c compressor, replaced broken hinge on center console lid, new radiator resovoir and hose, replaced broken trim at base of drivers seat, new oem/volvo floor mats, replaced small grill logo with large grill logo, replaced rings around door lock plungers, replaced gas cap tether, replaced belt tensioner, and both the engine and cabin air filters just for good measure and a I am completely on top of oil and fluids like clock work.. I have racked up 180,000 miles on it and I hope to exceed 500k and beyond... Its just exhausting staying on top of everything and it all seems to hit at once. I THOUGHT you were supposed to weigh to the exact gram how much refrigerant you added to bring it to factory spec as opposed to eye balling it that could lead to premature failure of your compressor. However you do absolutely seem to know what you are doing so to each their own.. enjoyed your video thanks for sharing..
I notice in one of your comment asking someone if the a\c line going into the car was cold or not. would you tell me what's the difference on this or what does it mean if its cold or not because ours is not cold. thank you very much for time.
Correct Kim: And if the point of injection is close to the compressor... it can literally "wash-away" the lubrication from the compressor swash plates. The A/C compressor on a car is a delicate piece of high-speed machinery. Treat it with the utmost respect.
Did you show how to check to see if the system is low on Freon? Connect the hose without the engine running or the can connected and look at the gauge it will indicate if the system is low, also after you start the automobile engage the rear A/C if it has one before connecting the charge can to the port! Are you using the synthetic Air Charge R-134a? Does the can shown add oil to the a/c? If it leaks Freon the a/c oil also leaks out! Good advice!

Hey there rob I have a problem with my 06 xc90 ac it's will will blow cold in the rear vents but not in the front have you seen something like that before has anyone please help Thanks Jo
Replace the front ac expansion valve. The front and rear ac have different expansion valves, so the fact that your rear ac is blowing cold indicates that your compressor is fine and refrigerant level is OK, but your front ac expansion valve is sticking.
Hey Robert, I have been watching your videos for a while and I really like how you make things simple. I recently discovered that my condenser was leaking and causing me to have to put Freon in my 2005 xc90 often to keep it cool. I am going to go ahead and replace the condenser/dryer but boy is it costly from Volvo. However, there are plenty of high quality replacements out there at nearly half the cost as I have used other nonVolvo parts in the past with great satisfaction, Moog being one of my favorite after market replacement parts for suspension work. Can you recommend any nonVolvo condenser/dryer combo out there? Also, have you replaced a condenser before? It looks fairly doable.
James Hunt Condensers do not go bad often, I would get one out of the salvage yard if that is an option for you. A few brands I like are Nissin, Bhar, etc.. Again, I would likely get a used one.
Great, thanks for the quick response. I found the exact one online. It is a Valeo with the dryer attached. I can get the whole thing for $140. I looked at the sticker on the current one in the car and they are the same. Sounds like a deal to me. Thanks
It is not advisable to invert the can as your allowing liquid 134a to possibly enter the compressor. Compressors cannot compress a liquid and you will damage the compressor. You can get away with it but one day you will invert that can a little to long and ....
Hi Robert.... Love your Videos in general...but I have to say, I am not a fan of this way of recharging the A/C on any car... this is an off-the-shelf "Quick-Fix". We all need to be mindful that R134a...the gas used today.... is a problem for the planet. For us all. It is NOT a benign refrigerant gas: It does harm the ozone layer. (Allegedly.) I listen to the arguments from all sides.... I'm no Greenpeace member or whatever, Friend of the Earth nutcase.... But this idea that you can just wallop in a canister of gas to rejuvenate your car's A/C system is not a positive step forward. It simply cannot be. For a start: Your "Not as cold as it should be" could be caused by many other factors. To correctly analyse any system....be it a car or a domestic refrigerator or a refrigerant plant, you need to know the discharge pressure from the compressor. There is no "dipstick" to check the gas level in any cars A/C... There are many factors at play. The gas itself has a complex atomic structure...it goes through several changes in its physical state depending on two major factors: Pressure & Temperature. That is the whole principle of refrigeration: The exchange of energy to produce different states of physical being. Gas to liquid. Liquid to gas. Robert: I love your videos....you have helped me immensely with my own Volvo XC90 and for that, I will always be grateful, of course. Stay well, my friend.
Hi Robert. I am surprised you needed to ask that question. My point is simple: There was no reference to ambient temperature. You did not measure the discharge pressure from the compressor...and you used a gauge that was next to useless: "Low-OK-High".... totally meaningless. If that gauge indicated "Low"....it could equally mean the TXV/Thermal Expansion valve is partially blocked.... in which case you be will be easily increasing the head pressure from the compressor (Discharge) to a dangerous level that may or not be saved by the HP Cut-out...or...lose the compressor and/or the condenser. Yeah.OK...it's a Band-Aid fix.... it might work.....but probably won't and, if (Big IF) the system WAS short of gas it needs most urgently needs to be determined where it has gone....... Otherwise, like R12.... we are achieving nothing by simply repeatedly "topping up the gas"..... Like a gas-fired BBQ. Stay well. Best regards.
Robert, every time I need to work on my XC90, I search Google and TH-cam, and there you are. Thanks a ton for all the help you've given me.

Torrey Thompson I got it from O'Reily's, not sure of the brand.
Thank you
You are welcome
I'D hose down the condenser after topping up.
Thanks for sharing
exceptional mentoring, thank you sir!
You are welcome.
thx for the help
You are welcome.
Robert, does Volvo instruct to add freon on the high side in some XC90's? 2005?
Never.
What if the clutch to the ac compressor don’t engage?
probably needs serviced.
I have a 2006 S40i my a/c stopped blowing cold, I got the freon and plugged in the little plug to refill and it's going to the max, like the pressure goes to the red side of the gauge. any ideas Why?
+Antonio Arguelles Lozoya because the compressor is not engaged.
And how could i fix this issue? Thank You for your time man. I appreciate it.
+Antonio Arguelles Lozoya did you add freon?
Robert DIY I sure did sir. I first bleed the lines out, then added freon, car still blows hot air :(
Did you add enough for the compressor to come on?
Is it hard to change the ac compressor on a xc90
I have no idea.
Can you help me locate my 2003 XC90 ac compressor?
Wu Guangning Has it been removed?
I don't know.
If you can't find your ac compressor, maybe you should not be messing with it. Have a professional look at it.

Hi again Robert... Had bloke come to me with a huge Renault truck.....
I put the gauges on...heard the gas escaping...
There was NO COMPRESSOR...it had been stolen!......
Now. That's an EXPENSIVE repair!
Hey there rob
I have a problem with my 06 xc90 ac it's will will blow cold in the rear vents but not in the front have you seen something like that before has anyone please help
Thanks
Jo
+Jo Fer probably need programming.
Robert DIY than you I'll look in to that
Replace the front ac expansion valve.
Thanks
You should be good to go.
what is the 3Nm.. my gasket seal snap and pressure was coming and my ac was not cold any.. need help.. anybody..
Torque measurement. Like finger tight.
thanks Robert!!1
You are welcome.
It is not advisable to invert the can as your allowing liquid 134a to possibly enter the compressor. Compressors cannot compress a liquid and you will damage the compressor. You can get away with it but one day you will invert that can a little to long and ....
Just following the instructions. 🤷🏾♂️
Any idea where the expansion valve is?
Nope
Where is the AC Compressor on a 2005 XC90?
+Jamie Whitaker In the path of the serpentine belt.
I get that, I was asking if it is on the top or underneath the engine?
I don't know, you have to look.
2012 ac relay Location
I have no idea.
...MY VEHICLE IS A 2004 VOLVO XC90 WITH 236,000 MILES...
Nice
Once again, my thanks!
+Ron Pieper you are welcome
Hi Robert.... Love your Videos in general...but I have to say, I am not a fan of this way of recharging the A/C on any car... this is an off-the-shelf "Quick-Fix".
We all need to be mindful that R134a...the gas used today.... is a problem for the planet.
For us all. It is NOT a benign refrigerant gas: It does harm the ozone layer. (Allegedly.)
I listen to the arguments from all sides....
That is the whole principle of refrigeration:
The exchange of energy to produce different states of physical being.
Gas to liquid. Liquid to gas.
Robert: I love your videos....you have helped me immensely with my own Volvo XC90 and for that, I will always be grateful, of course.
Stay well, my friend.
so what's your point?
Used, not sued.
Marisa Delci OK
What do you do if the recirculating button doesn’t turn on?
Take it to a shop to have them diagnose it for me.
