Reverb is now the world's biggest guitar showroom. I will just call a shop directly if they have something I want. I save on taxes and usually get a discount.

Doing the same all the time, they still gonna make a ton of money on private/2nd hand sales, not going to feel sorry for them. Also keep in mind if you use bump services or pay with paypal they charge you also up to a few percentage, so you will end up with fees easily up to 8-10%. Also there are countries outside of the US where local deals almost non existing so basically its only reverb you got.

The last guitar I bought from Reverb was listed with a local pickup option. It was a dealer so I called them to get directions and confirm the price and they said it was cheaper because they were not paying the Reverb fees. I didn’t realize they were breaking the Reverb rules. The guitar is great anyway.

I always reach out to the shop that’s listing the Reverb post if they are a proper shop. And if it’s someone local, I always offer them cash or let them know. I’ll take cash instead of going through Reverb. All you have to do to get around Reverb being suspicious is just leave the posting up a little bit longer after you sell it. Hell yeah yeah I use it as a billboard. Reverb can suck it.

Reverb lost a lot of what separated them from ebay. It's still fun to peruse, but it's been a long time since I considered actually buying anything. Deals are hard to find with shipping, taxes, exchange rate (I'm in Canada), etc.

It's great if you live in a more remote part of Canada and you can't make it to a major city very often. Taxes and shipping are a pain, but cheaper than paying for ferries, meals, possibly a hotel, fuel and missing work. I've gotten some great deals, and find a lot of sellers will negotiate and there is room to deal. The one downside is that my wife is the local Canada post mail carrier so I can't sneak anything past her!

Part of the issue in this case is that the fee going toward the buyer and seller protection makes sense. If a customer is making a choice to buy direct and you aren’t using their processing and protection should they get the fee. That being said if a seller is actively moving people offline that’s a different deal.

This happened to me. I canceled an order because Reverb made a shipping price error (they verbally admitted this later). I refunded the guy and he came back and offered to buy it and drive 3 hours to pick it up. No shipping $ and I gave him $100. off, all was well. SIX MONTHS later Reverb tried to bill an expired card. No more Reverb.

A few years ago I had been trying to get a particular acoustic model that was no longer in production. They would appear on Reverb once in awhile but get snapped up within a few days before I had made up my mind if the price and condition were right.
Searching Reverb during lunch one day (no, I didn't have notifications set to alert me if one of these guitars came available), I found the model I wanted had been posted by a reputable independent shop two hours earlier, and at a much lower price than the others I had seen in the past.
I called the shop to ask about it. They offered me free next-day shipping and no tax if I bought it over the phone from them. I've been enjoying that guitar ever since!
Sorry, Reverb. I didn't know at the time that this was a big deal.

I saw a nice, used Les Paul via a Reverb search that caught my eye. Saw the private seller was reasonably local. Contacted him via email and did the deal in person / cash in hand. No shipping, no fees, no questions about guitar condition, no issues wondering about the seller getting paid. But his Reverb listing was the ad that triggered it all. I suppose if you make a habit of posting stuff on Reverb and never sell anything via Reverb they might not be too happy about it. I would think shops and other high volume sellers are under more scrutiny than individuals.

Reverb has been great for me. Shipping via UPS using Reverb's rates is amazing, paying for the service gives me piece of mind as well. My experience with listing items, especially guitars - be as detailed as possible, provide many pictures, detail anything that isn't OEM, detail blemishes, and make a video. It's a lot of work, but when you're providing a detailed listing, potential buyers know exactly what to expect. I also provide packing photos and keep tabs on items until they're delivered, along with a follow-up message. Be sure to pack things well and in almost all cases the item will not be damaged during transit. I've received 2 damage guitars, all avoidable if they had been properly packaged.

They copied Ebay on that rule. Set up your Reverb account with a Credit Card. If Reverb charges that lame fee, just file a chargeback. I still have great luck with selling guitar cases/gig bags on Craigslist. I meet an 1/8 of a mile from my house so if someone flakes, not a big deal. And best thing cash with no fees.

  • @ImNotOld_ImVintage

I prefer to buy directly from the store's website. When I bought my Custom Shop, I called a few and ordered from you. But when I am "shopping" on reverb, if a retailer has a shop, I see if they have a website. If so, I generally buy from their website, if the price is the same, to save myself the sales taxes. Maybe them saving that Reverb fee helps a mom and pop stay in business.
I did however buy a guitar on sale on Reverb in 2021 from CME because they were selling it for 10% less on Reverb than they were on their website. I found that slightly odd since that was basically the same as giving Etsy a bigger cut of the sale instead of changing the price on their own site.

I have never bought a guitar on line. The main reason is that if I buy a guitar or bass that sells for a moderate to premium price, I want to check it, examine and audition it personally. How does the neck feel in my hands? Are the frets well done? Do the pickups sound the way I imagined or want?
The other thing is that even when guitars are the same make and model there are still variations between individual instruments.
However I might buy some of these new budget brands, say between $200-$600, on line if the return and exchange policies are good.

If a shop also has their own website with the items listed for sale, then Reverb has no claim on a sale. If a buyer and seller are comfortable forgoing the protections Reverb offers, then, so be it. I'm comfortable ordering directly from smaller, legitimate shops in order to avoid the sales tax. The fact that the shop will not be paying a Reverb fee gives them some more wiggle room on price or upgraded shipping. Requires some research into the shops' reputations, but it's worth it, if you're not totally risk-averse.

I love reverb. I’ve gotten great deals and sold a lot on there. For a regular person, i can sell my gear in hours or days if i price it low, but i can find a buyer fast. All musicians lose money and are poor! I know i am, but its much better with reverb in my life vs the days before. I think the problem is people don’t like fees and service charges, but before reverb you really got a lot less for your stuff from any store in your city on trade in. I think reverb needs to split into 2 - one for regular people, and one for guitar stores. The issues are different and they can prob create something better for each. Like the guitar store the version should have a yearly membership fee to cover the things that sell off-line. But the pure fact that I can like go and look up hundreds or thousands of guitars in minutes and look at gear from all these years I mean it blows my mind. It’s so much better than it’s ever been.

I have used Reverb on multiple buys. Stuff from guitars, amps and lighting equipment and I’ve only had great experiences with them. Every time I’ve wanted something, I put it on my watchlist. I have never failed to get an offer within 1 day of tagging it to my watch list. I’ve got 15-20% off retail by doing this. So, the whole comment about everything is at least retail or above is just not true. There are always other listings that have a higher price and even shipping charges. You have to actually look through the listings to find what you want. I just bought a slightly used PRS and got it about 30% less than other used guitars of that model and got free shipping. You have to do your due diligence. Great video as always guys! I really want to drive from Atlanta to your shop and hang out and look at stuff and maybe even buy something.

My take is that if you close a deal using Reverb's functionality, including chat, the you owe Reverb the fees. It's in the T's & C's you agree to when you create an account and make a listing. That being said, if you have a brick-and-mortar store, and someone sees your listing on Reverb and then contacts the store directly either on the phone, in person, or the store's website, and doesn't use any of Reverb's protections for sellers or buyers, then I feel that you don't owe Reverb anything. I think Reverb may disagree with me on that one, but they are assuming the risk that they are a big billboard. It's like having a fireworks show at a stadium -- you can still see the fireworks outside of the stadium and not pay to get in.

I don't understand this. We have a local guitar shop who puts their stuff on Reverb all the time. They have a disclaimer (like a lot of eBay listings) that they are a brick and mortar store and items are subject to local sale. That seems reasonable to me, and I wouldn't expect Reverb to take a cut of a local sale even if the item is _listed_ on Reverb.
Now, if you try to _get around_ their fees, like sending a Reverb message to a potential buyer to contact you offline, that's a problem. In that case, Reverb has absolutely facilitated the sale, but you're trying to not pay them. Same with eBay. Contact offline to complete the purchase - not cool.

Now, the buyer needs to needlessly chat with a lobotomized AI agent and wait a week for the seller to allow a return, then a label can be printed. Since returns are now involving a stupid AI agent, I have cut down on my guitar buying. I have bought one Reverb guitar and one ebay guitar. While Reverb can be a little hit or miss I’m going to tell you about my eBay experience. The item I was selling was not a musical instrument but a high end 4k Blu-ray player. It sold for $750 including $100 for shipping because of the weight factor. eBay charges were so high that it actually negated that $100 and so I basically sold it for free shipping and took a hit on my profit (which was zero to begin with as it sold at a loss but just to get me some much needed cash) so in any case I will never sell on eBay again.

Reverb has gone the way eBay and other platforms have gone, when greedy owners take advantage. The exorbitant fees don’t match the customer service! What a shame as it had potential…

Reverb has circled the drain IMO...was once a great platform that has been ruined by corporate greed. The cost to consumers has increased while the service levels have plummeted. It's too bad CME sold it...but it's the 21st century business model and it sucks.

If you're "using" Reverb you play by their rules. If you sell in the chat and avoid the fees you're ripping them off. It's simple. I don't like Reverb but if you use it , you pay.

Hmmm … didn’t know this was a problem. I saw a cool guitar recently on Reverb and, after some messages to learn more, made an offer right there on Reverb. Heard nothing for several hours. So … I called the store, its name was on Reverb, and learned my offer was too low. I then asked loads of questions, got to like the salesman and so I decided to up the offer. It was accepted and, asking how I should purchase it, the guy said either on Reverb or there, adding that either was fine with him. As my credit card was on the desk, I made the transaction then and there. I had established a personal connection and also reasoned that I would get to arrange my set up, preferred action and strings, and arrange to pay extra for air shipping (the country was too hot to safely truck it a couple thousand miles). Was I wrong? Was he? Anyway … awesome guitar, absolutely a great deal, and a fine experience.

Reverb is a piece oh crap guys. Those guys taking a cut of the guitar Im selling... It's bullshit beyond. Ok.. Try I pay reverb $100 a month. Some monthly fee to have access to they're user base. But to hike every sale I make with a percentage?
So (scenario) I make a guitar. It takes me a month to make it (Cause I can get things done but Im slow as hell). Reverb gets 10-20 percent my sale? Yeah great business if your a crook.
Also the customers on reverb do shady shit. buy the guitar then demand a refund if you don't give them an after sale discount. or you eat all the time and effort shopping the instrument which gets sat on for weeks by reverb. The customer support.;... don't get me started. Ill just say they're dicks to deal with. NObody on the phone for sure... your left in irritating one sided chat rooms.
Normally you pay to have an add... You don't own percentage of the sale. These gig economy websites man... Bullshidos.

Super lame. Reverb needs to chill out on this policing messages thing, or they will lose more and more customers. I try to do everything i can to avoid selling on reverb if I can for this very reason, and the 8% i lose after all the fees, and transaction fees. Great platform. But they need to chill a bit.

Did you miss the part where he forfeited his deposit and told them he no longer wanted the guitar?
If you are learning to play guitar, first thing you need to learn is to LISTEN. Because what you automatically assume is going to happen, rarely does.
