How India is building the most difficult network of Tunnels in Kashmir Mountains?

- When Maharaja Pratap Singh of Kashmir first explored the possibility of a railway line connecting Jammu with Srinagar in 1898, he could never have thought it will take more than 120 years to build his vision into a reality for the paradise on earth - Kashmir. In 1905, Maharaja Pratap Singh approved a rail line between Jammu and Srinagar via Reasi through Moghul road.
78 years later the Prime Minister of Free India kicked off the line from Jammu Tawi to Udhampur in 1983. But the line from Katra to Qazigund through the mountains of Sedimentary Rocks still looked unattainable.
July 2002: The Central Government declared the line a National Project. This meant that it would be constructed and completed irrespective of cost funded entirely by the Central Government would fund the entire project.
The Kashmir Railway project is thus divided into four sections:
Leg 0 - extending 53 km (33 mi) from Jammu to Udhampur, completed in April 2005.
Leg 1 - extending 25 km (16 mi) from Udhampur to Katra. This section inaugurated on 4 July 2014 by PM Shri Narendra Modi. There are two Express trains planned initially - Delhi-Katra and Kalka-Katra.
Leg 2 - extending 148 km (92 mi) from Katra to Banihal. Under construction, may open in 2020 - this is where our Story happens.
Leg 3 - extending 112 km (70 mi) from Banihal to Baramulla, completed in October 2009.
The 290 km-long Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is being constructed by Indian Railways as National Project in the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The Railway Board of the Government of India has entrusted the construction of Katra-Dharam Section (72.91 km-long) of USBRL project to Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL) through Northern Railway.
This film is developed for the 5 Tunnels - T6, T9, T10, T11 and T12 in the Kauri-Dugga section (part of Katra-Dharam Section) to showcase how the engineering marvel is being built by ITD Cementation for the Konkan Railways. This film is a property of our client ITD Cementation India Ltd and we have presented it here only to showcase our capability to make such films.

They visit Jalandhar in winters, by watching their so warm behaviour I visited Kashmir.. local people were even more warm and welcoming.. they became very happy when I told them that I’m from Jalandhar.. as a electricity plant will be set up in Jalandhar which will enlighten the Northern Kashmir. I being Indian never disobey values of Kashmiris... at last this is a great project by North Railways... Northern Railways the shining star of railways of India..

I appreciate the civil work being carried out for connecting this geography through Railway network, but we should have opted for a dual track rather than the single train track that is being laid down now.
In future it is difficult to lay a 2nd track, so, it should have been done now only.
2nd track will definitely help for movement of goods train. Single track will mean only passenger train movement.

Interesting. I wonder why they don't use a large circular drilling machine like the ones used to drill the Chunnel between UK and France I am sure there is a good reason, it was just never explained.
Because the Rock quality of Himalayan mountains are more like dust, the whole thing breaks. Then again suddenly very strong rocks come across. Before this process, the Russians and French have already tried and failed. Finally India has developed its own way through the mountains.

Tunnels are required not only for roads but also for water canals and Himalayan river diversions from 1). sutlez to patiala--kurukshetra- kota- narmada and Godavari basin via upper himalayan yamuna projects and tunnels and pipe lines.
2).Nepal range projects and pipe canals to south India
3). One tunnel and pipe lines required from brahmaputra river to haridwar.
4).tunnels and pipe lines required from patna and Calcutta to mahanadi basin and then to indravathi godavari and from there to nagarjuna sagar and Srisailam project to pothireddy padu- Telugu ganga project to Thirunalveni. These are some examples to link Himalayan rivers to south Indian rivers with some gravitation and sometimes lifting.

It is a great challenge to construct tunnels in a region like Kashmir. The construction method is limited to New Austrian Tunneling method which is more complex and time consuming. (Tunneling by using Tunnel Boring Machines becomes logistically uneconomical). Moreover soft soil condition (sedimentary silt stone) , permafrost under glaciers, harsh climate etc make it more difficult to construct a tunnel. Respect for ITD Cementation India Limited .

wow so many different comments regarding a lot of thing's..i probably just never read all the comments, so not sure if any one has mentioned the safety aspect..The region is mainly broken rock and sand witch tells you it's moving slowly..but you's want to build tunnels through 2 current slip lines of the rubble...(that is just crazy) a road would be a better Idea. not a Train that carries 1000's each journey..1 collapse or slip would be costly to India..and with the Earthquake risk in the region is it really that wise to build it. when the money could be put to use else where.
