    i come back to this tutorial often to understand my camera, it’s so vintage and complex that everything is manual. thanks so much!

    Thanks for the over view. I have had my dad's camera since 2007 and haven't taken a single picture with it. I am getting ready to pull it off the shelf and get it ready for use again.

    I was so glad to find these videos, thank you for making them! I just dug out my family's al-1, and pretty much all the other videos I've found are on the ae-1 so I was really glad to find something I know will be specific to the camera I have

    Great overview! I have an A-1 that I've used forever, but this one confused me with less buttons/controls and has required some extra tweaking to fix the shutter but I figured it out thanks to this video. It was low battery and unknowingly set to self timer mode which was delaying my release. All good now! Great explanation on double exposures btw!! Super easy for any newbie to understand

    I can't wait to find a cheap Canon AL-1 possibly with a nice lens because these cameras are often overlooked.

    This was such good/helpful information. I just bought a copy of this camera. First film camera for me ever.

    When I pull the lever to take a picture, the film roll spool thing isn’t turning and I’m not sure if it’s working or not

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most likely, the film is not in the take-up spool inside the camera. To check that, go into a dark room with no light and open the camera. Feel to see if the leader is attacked. If not, turn on the light and re-load. If so, close the back and keep going. Bear in mind that your frame counter will reset. It could be that either the film did not attach to the spool correctly or there's a LOT of slack inside the film cassette.

    I am a total film NOOB, mine seems to be stuck on automatic and I can’t get the film to advance? I was trying to figure out how to get it on manual like you did in the video but now we are here…

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. Is the problem that the dial won't adjust? And to make sure, you have batteries loaded, correct?

    • @acacialeibka
      @acacialeibka 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for the reply! I Actually figured out that the button that locks the selection in place was stuck and wasn’t depressing all the way so I could turn it. I was able to clean it and we are good to go now :)

    You missed to talk about the focusing confirmation.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh shoot. Sorry about that. Basically there are three LEDs on the bottom of the viewfinder. The green one confirms that the thing in the middle of the screen -- whatever you place there -- is in focus. The red ones on either side indicate out of focus. I forget which, left or right, indicates you're focused too close and which indicates too far.

    I was lucky enough to find one is quite good condition, with a working battery door. The seals are bad, along with the mirror cushion, so I can't use it til I get it serviced.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a good service will fix that. I have a video on light seal repair using cotton yarn, but nothing for mirror cushions.

    When you loaded your film and were "taking photos" and advancing the film at around 4:25, how come your exposure indicator was staying on '1'?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question, and I don't know since I don't have this camera any more. It's possible that the frame counter was jammed.

    Hey David, quick question. Does the Focus Assist work with any Canon lens or just he 50mm F1.4 that was provided? Thanks!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that it works correctly with most lenses. I'm not sure about slow lenses, like an f/8 mirror lens.

    Hi, David. I have a question. My camera only shoot when is en bulb mode. I’ve been trying everything. Do you have any idea abt what i am doing wrong?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I had that happen to a couple of these. It means the electronics have failed and the camera's not repairable. Sorry for the bad news on that.

    i just bought this camera from a thrift store. I out film and batteries in it but it’s not doing any of this stuff so I’m afraid it’s broken :( could i be doing something wrong or how would i go about fixing it?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one needs two AAA batteries for any functions to work. So verify that your batteries are good and that there's no leaked battery corrosion in the battery chamber. If there is, it can be cleaned with cotton swabs and distilled white vinegar.

      I completely agree. AAA batteries, especially in cameras with a grip, are a great idea.

      @@DavidHancock If only a solution like your paper clip idea for the battery door could be found for the Canon EOS 30 series, that hinge has a life expectancy and designed to fail. Thanks for your reviews 📸
