Im so glad you shared this. From all the videos you’ve posted eating, I’ve gotten the impression the Chinese were genuinely surprised & pleased a dark skinned brother speaks their language b/c most of them don’t travel. Racism is in every country but I would’ve been surprised if you’ve endured it there. I didn’t get that vibe from your posts but then again, we don’t know what you really go through. I’m glad your time there is going great so far. ❤️🙏🏼
As a Chinese, I agree with you and your feelings are absolutely justified. There is a lot of work we need to do to address racism in China and beyond. That begins by connecting people through our shared humanity. I think many Chinese interact with you in an awkward way because they don't understand how you feel. So I'm grateful for your work in school and here. China has and will always be a diverse nation. With 56 indigenous ethic groups, we will never arrive at where we are without learning from and working with everyone. You feelings matter and you absolutely belong in China, deserving the same dignity and respect like everyone else. Just like every family, there will always be some aunties or uncles that try to ruin the Thanksgiving dinner with inappropriate conversations, but there will always be a place for you
I love seeing this kind of reaction. I was told by a Chinese teacher “they don’t like black in China.” Trust that I didn’t go back to that class. There’s some fear of going to China but this kind of perspective and mentality gives me hope!
This is an extremely wonderful video!! Proud of you! I enjoyed it all!! Kudos to whomever raised you. You are an amazing gentleman! And uniquely made! All who love you are blessed! The " Teacher " story at the end was EVERYTHING! You soooo won😂😂😂😂❤ Merry Christmas Eve🎉🎄
Thank you for watching! And thank you so much for the compliments! 🙏 that moment with the students and the grandma will be one of my favourite stories forever!! 😎 Merry Christmas Eve and hope you have an amazing Christmas!
Thank you so much for your service to the new generation. Teachers is such an important profession. I appreciate you. As always, I love how pleasant you are. You must be an excellent teacher to your students. Anyways, have a Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 and blessed New Year. Love and respect ❤️
It’s my pleasure! 🙏 and thank you!! Yeah, the way that they are around me convinced me that I’m doing a good job 😌 have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! 🙏
I'm someone who doesn't enjoy traveling so your videos and other creators give me a glimse into other cultures. I really enjoy what you do! Best wishes!
Here for it (just hearing you talk)!! Couple questions that could kick some video ideas What’ve you learned while being there? How much longer do you plan to live there? Anywhere else you’d want to move and teach? Going home soon? Or does any family have plans to visit you? Girlfriend- when/how did y’all meet?
Very happy u made the video i enjoyed it a lot! Also i support ur view on the whole topic with leaving a good memorie for people. I do the same as a ''dangerous/strange/suspicious'' looking turkish person who worked with children in Kindergarden in germany, i know exactly how some older people/highly protective parents can be towards some one who is supicious to them. What the diffrence to ur situation is, im myself german so sometimes its a strange feeling cause im born here but i understand them and if i have the chance i always wave or smile towards people so they see im just another human living his life.😃
We were photographed a lot when we were in China. And we're white European. I never found the attention to be hostile, just a friendly curiosity. Most chinese people will never leave mainland China and Chinese media does not focus on the world outside China. So anyone non-chinese is still unusual. I didn't mind the attention, I found it wholesome. Great video!
I was actually just watching the first videos you posted just over a year ago earlier today, can't believe it's already been a year on the journey bro! 🎉 a month or so late but still haha, You used to speak about travelling maybe, I was wondering if you've ever been to the great wall after all this time? Also are you going to do a video about how you spent new years eve again this year? You look amazing bro 💪
Hi, Yinka. My questions for new videos are: 1) Have you ever had any kind of medical emergency? How it is to a foreigner to deal with that in China? Are you supposed to pay a health insurance? Which one is more interesting for a foreigner? 2) How do you do to rent a place to stay? Did you use an app like Wellcee or some kind of real state firm? What is a foreigner supposed to do concerning local government? I've heard you need to inform the Police departmanet nearby where you are living from time to time, but I don't know exactly how it works. Thanks, Dude!
I totally agree. Racism EVERYWHERE. From misinformation that is constantly being spread about blacks. It doesn't matter where you go. Me and my husband have experienced in our travels that when you have conversations with them you can see the light bulb 💡 turn on in their eyes. ❤. Keep spreading the good vibes.
It’s cool to see someone with a different experience. Would love to hear more about working conditions in china, especially compared to western countries.
Another suggestion for theme: can you share the customs/beliefs Chinese have for eating (drinking hot water, “cold” food vs “hot” food to balance the Chin - energy) if young people still have them nowadays ? Great videos and thanks for sharing.
Hmmm interesting. I wonder it would be interesting to hear about any racism you experienced in uk in contrast and compare how it differs in quality. I liked the story of the children and grandma. Very sweet qnd innocent the little children, perhaaps it is helping grandma to challenge some preconceptions too. Great positive attitude you have to it all.
Hi Yinka, excellent video, just want to know why you chose teaching and teaching young kids. You have a wonderful personality and always cheerful. You mentioned you wasn’t feeling well, what are the doctors like there and do you take western medicine or Chinese traditional medicine. Have you any encounter with Chinese hospitals and what the experience like?
Yinka, are you familiar with content creator Oriental Pearl's TH-cam channel she just did a video titled "Why you should never teach English in Japan." It was a light-hearted video. She's from the US, and lived in China for some years and now lives in Japan and speaks Mandarin and Japanese fluently. She is married to a Japanese man. It was funny hearing her take on teaching English to Japanese children. The video is only 12 minutes. I'd love to hear your perspective on teaching Chinese children English. Thanks. She took us in the classroom and we got to see the children.
I thought you didn't feel well, A mother knows(Lol) I don't feel well either, the weather keeps changing, one day it's cold and the next day it's warm. I will keep you in my prayers and you do the same for me.. Love You!❤❤❤
Which TEFL certificate program did you take? And what was the process like to find your initial teaching role? Apps? Websites? Recruiters? Have you noticed it’s become harder or easier for others to get a teaching job in China? Thanks Yinka, big fan
I think I did the I-to-I 120 hours program, and I went through a recruiter who connected me to an agency in China I’m not sure whether it has gotten easier or harder, people have told me all sorts of different things 😭 Thanks for being here, Merry Christmas Eve!!
Thank you for just talking!! That robe looks like the Ghostface Killah robe…😂super comfy! As a woman of a certain age, most older generations are always racists lol! They were just raised differently, it’s not OK but it’s totally understandable. Your personality just make it easy to smile at you and talk to you, people will be just that! Happy holidays.
What do you do for work? I've been through so many videos and each time hoped you started with an intro "hi my name is yinka, I moved to China in x for x"
I'm looking to move to China soon, probably teaching English, but my Fiance moved back to China, as she was unable to get a Job here in the UK. Any recommendation, I've been to China of course, but its a big move to actually go and live there, what sort of jobs are there for westerns other then teach English?
Also I can completely reinforce what you're saying regarding the elders being slight against westerns or foreigners in general. My Fiances Grandad, doesn't like me, purely because I am western, he never spoken to me.
Have you ever met any of the other African American TH-camrs that also live in China? If not, can you get all of them together and have a party while doing a video of it? And maybe each one can bring a custom dish indicative of where they are originally from.
@@YinkaAbroadThank you for sharing some of your experiences in China and teaching the little ones. Some of us may never get to visit China in person, so when you post, I feel like your two students who excitedly said "Teacher!". I'm glad most of your experiences are good out there! I look forward to watching the possible upcoming party! 😉😁Please have a wonderful Holiday!🤗
Yinka, have you had the need to go to the doctor ? When I was living in Beijing a few years ago I attended a big hospital of traditional Chinese medicine, and was a unique experience (example: pulse and tongue diagnosis, bags of tea as medicine). Are there this kind of hospitals at Shenzhen so you could visit one and record ? Just a suggestion as a theme.
I would like to know how it was to go through COVID in China? If I remember correctly you've been there since 2019 so that's when it all started correct??
Funnily enough, I haven’t actually done much Chinese style cooking, some of my cooking has been inspired by Chinese cooking, but I mainly cook meals that are focused on giving me results for my training 🤣 the only Chinese dish that I make properly is their tomato and egg dish
@@YinkaAbroad I know the feeling! I discovered a copycat recipe for Double Tree Hotel's Chocolate Chip Cookies. They tasted incredible! I'm ashamed to say that I baked them waaaay too many times!😉😁
Hmmm, I definitely think learning the language is worthwhile. For your business major, I don’t know, I think you’d have to speak to someone who knows more about this field to give you a better answer 😅
Do you feel Chinese warm up to you because you speak Mandarin so fluently? I think your comprehension of the language breaks barriers between you and them.
It definitely does help a lot, but even before we have the opportunity to speak, I am very friendly, I’ll smile at people looking, or wave at them, so I assume that immediately makes them feel more comfortable 👌
That’s a good question and point to think about. It definitely probably helps. Shows he’s “home”, he’s done his research and could show good intent in his interactions. And allows him to soften their feelings or thoughts of/towards him. Allows him to show his personality and welcoming spirit.
I'm African American with no ambition of going to China. But I need someone to make a video about the relationship between Africa and China. Why so many Chinese in Africa and many Africans in China? Its like you guys have a secret or something.
So you intend on staying in China and settling down, also, have you been to the countryside? Also, in China, are Indians/pakistanis rare? Like same rarity as black people?
