short answer; he's a daedra, tied to a daedric prince. even if you "out" him, he wont die, he'll just remanifest sometime later, Vile was just asking you to do it for gags, it's better to the the Masque anyways

so I tried to keep Barbas on my current playthrough...but...i'm doing stealth archer and he kept pushing me while i was sneaking in dungeons...so i gave him back

The Masque of Clavicus Vile is counted as a Daedric Artifact, not the Rueful Axe, so keep Barbas alive if you want the Oblivion Walker achievement (or Daedric Influence if you haven’t gotten that achievement yet, which I doubt anyone has missed as it just needs one artifact while Oblivion Walker needs all 15 for you to earn the achievement)
