Is Rongmei Naga the first recognised Naga tribe by the British empire? The above title might appear to be misleading or concocted for some people, but as per the first written record by the British officer, Capt R B Pemberton, in his "Report on the eastern frontier of India" published in 1835, kabui naga is clearly mentioned as 'kupooees' naga, a misspelled word for Kabui. Even Col McCullough, who married a meitei lady, referred them as 'Koupooee'. The history of Kabui Naga may date back to Moirang kingdom, the original inhabitants of present day loktak lake and surrounding valleys of Manipur, in which the folklore of "Khamba and Thoibi" mentioned about the wise shaman, Kabui salang maiba. It is likely that the Britishers too borrowed the word 'kupooees' (Kabui) from meitei soldiers who were enrolled in 'Manipur Levy' in 1824. After the 'Treaty of Yandaboo' in 1826, the British govt started influencing the administration of Manipur kingdom and its surrounding territories. British officers who visited manipur and Naga Hills, started naming various Naga tribes as per their understanding from the majority tribes such as the Meiteis, Cacharis and Bengalis, and thus ignored the true local names of the Nagas. It was Francis Buchanan, British anthropologist under east India company, who first mentioned about the presence of Empeo tribe in Cachar hills. He toured around the whole cachar district somewhere around 1794 to 1810, where he met the Empeos, present day zeliangrong people. The displacement of Kabui people started when Col McCulloch in 1840 allowed kookies (kuki) people to settle down in north cachar hills and adjoining hill areas of manipur to act as a barrier against constant raids by the Angami nagas. Kukis were later invited by Zeme people to settle down in present day Peren district to prevent further raids from Khonoma village. British army under David Scott, raised manipur Levy, the first manipuri army, in April 1824 and issued 1500 muskets to manipur Raja Gambheer Singh who, later issued it to kookies to fight against the intolerant nagas under his rule. The kookies, using the issued British muskets, started raiding many kabui Naga villages and slaughtered many innocent kabuis between 1840 to 1890. Earlier, Maharaja Gambheer Singh in 1833, used these muskets to capture kohima where he erected the Kohima stone with his footprints sculptured on it, in token of conquest. Many Kabuis, fearing barbaric raids from lushei kuki and Thadou kuki, fled away to Imphal valleys, silchar, cachar and naga hills and settled down till today. After Capt Pemberton and Col McCullough, Dr R Brown, the political agent of manipur, mentioned kabui people as 'Kowpoee' in his " Annual report of the munnipore political agency for 1868-69". He later changed it to 'Kowpoi' in his "Statistical account of the native state of munnipore 1873". Damant in 1879, further divided kabui into two classes: the Songba and the Poeron, however, his understanding was limited to few kabui and puimei villages in present day tamenglong district. Maj general James Johnstone described them as Kutcha nagas, a vague term possibly copied from Cachari word, in his book " My experiences in Manipur and the Naga Hills 1896". According to the linguistic survey of India Vol III part II, published in 1903, G A Grierson clearly mentioned that kabui naga language belongs to Naga-Bodo sub group. Kabui was later used by Lt Col J Shakespeare in his book " the lushei kuki clans" in 1912. J H Hutton in his book " the Angami Nagas " published in 1921 further divide Kuccha Nagas into three sub tribes: Zeme, Liangmei, and Maruangmai(Rongmei). Finally, the Zeliangrong movement, also known as the Heraka movement, started by Haipou Jadonang, a mystic Naga leader who resisted house tax payment was hanged on charges of murder in 1931 by the British govt, marked the beginning of the Naga Raj movement, synchronous with the formation of Naga Club and its nationalist movement of 1929. Later Rani Gaidinliu, at the age of 16, was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1932. She was released only after India's Independence in 1947. No nagas had experienced imprisonment for 15 long years like Gaidinliu ever before. They were the only Naga freedom fighters to be recognised by Indian govt till today. Kabui naga tribe is now recognised as 'Rongmei naga' on 9th January 2012 by the government of India. Assam govt and Manipur govt subsequently recognised them as Rongmei naga, however, Nagaland govt refused to recognise them in spite of the fact that there exist 1313 electoral names as Kabui in the 1963 electoral roll of the state. The confusion created by the Britishers on Rongmei people have done more harm than good. Even today, many Rongmei people settling down in Imphal valleys recognised themselves as Kabui rather than Rongmei. So if truth be told, kabui Nagas might be the first naga tribe to be recognised and written on record by the British empire as there are no written records before Capt R B Pemberton, the first British officer to visit manipur in 1824 .
