When first learning the deadlift, where do you begin? A great place to start is conquering the hip hinge and learning what it feels like to maintain a set back.

In this video, we dive into three beginner deadlift exercises that can facilitate one's progression to properly learning the movement mechanics required for a strong deadlift. Check them out below!
    1. Kettlebell Deadlift Off An Elevated Surface
Why They're Great: This movement helps to teach the hip hinge in a controlled and limited range of motion. This can be useful for true beginners who have never tried a barbell deadlift before.
Who Kettlebell Deadlifts Off An Elevated Surface Are Best For: True deadlift beginners.
    2. Kettlebell Deadlift
Why They're Great: This exercise is great for slightly increasing hip hinge range of motion to a point that will closely replicate the height of a normal barbell deadlift.
Who Kettlebell Deadlift Are Best For: Beginners and athletes that need extra deadlift tempo and volume work with lighter loads.
    3. Trap Bar Deadlift
Why They're Great: This lift is great for loading the hips and improving one's ability to maintain a strong set back with heavier loads. Also, it's a great hybrid movement between the squat and deadlift, so it has carryover for multiple types of athletes.
Who Trap Bar Deadlifts Are Best For: Beginners, sport athletes, and anyone looking for more deadlift variations.
Note, every progression provided in this video should be performed under one's own skill level and progressed accordingly.
If you find that you're having trouble with the deadlift or hip hinge, then we'd advise enlisting a coach for additional hands on help.

Good video. I actually find myself having trouble with the trap bar because I like the tactile cue to hinge on the way down you get from a bar running down your legs, and a trap bar is way out in front of your legs.
