Temporarily caring for one currently an 8-month-old. My God is this dog restless. Always on the go, where to? I don't know. His coat is a dark reddish brown and he possesses a tail. He's a challenge for the other much senior dogs in the home. They usually growl at him to contain his exuberance!
Hi Buffy, The American Kennel Club removed "spaniel" designation and changed the name to American Brittany in 1982 because the breeding and conformation of the Brittany Dog in America had changed quite dramatically from the original conformation of the French Brittany Spaniel that were originally imported from France in 1934. The American Brittany has had most of the original Spaniel characteristics bred out of the bloodlines to make the dog larger with longer legs and straighter shorter coats. These changed breeding characteristics meet the hunting requirements of the western united states that are high Desert habitat as opposed to the forested habitat that the French Brittany Spaniel was originally bred for. Thus the name American Brittany is used to distinguish this breed from the shorter and longer curly haired French Brittany Spaniel. So like many breeds, they did originate in France but with selective breeding they have evolved into something different from the original French breed. That is why the video is correctly titled American Brittany per the American Kennel club guidelines.
