Since watching this video I have trained my children well. They stopped crying and are getting straight A’s in school. Thank you!
🤣
Then be ready to house and feed them for the rest of your life.
I needed that giggle❤

Yes I needed this video, because I got a new dog and it's picking up my older dog behavior!
First time dog owner, and started binging your channel. Thank you so much for what you do!
Good for you in finding the right dog training channel and seeking good advice
Thank god for this video my dog won’t stop whining, it’s worse everyday hope this works
It sadly doesn't sometimes
@ ya my dogs still whine 🤷♀️
It’s so FUCKING annoying bro
Now, how do I tell that to my neighbour? 😂 subtlety over time….
@@wazer85bruh the faq kinda humor is that
Just ask them if they have an email. Then go home and send them this with no further explanation 😂😂😂
@@wazer85. I REALLY hope you’re kidding, b/c if NOT…..That is just EVIL and you should NEVER be around pets.
My neighbors dog is soooooo annoying, they have a dog that screams like a husky all day ,and he gets into a fight with a tree all the time and that’s how the screaming starts .like come on man don’t tell me u can’t hear that !!!! Maybe that’s why he keeps him outside . Oh and their bully barks at us and beats up the fence trying to get into a fight with our dogs .
Tried everything he said and other dog experts, my cocker literally screams and scratches in his crate all night. He even pooped and peed all in it even though he had been outside plenty before settling down. I made sure he poop and peed yet still did it all over his crate. I have had two dogs in the past from 8weeks old and this cocker is something else.
Maybe he has trauma in the crate
I made sure to never reinforce the behavior, worked on capturing calmness, ignoring, leaving the room, place .. shes non stop whining
i think some dogs aren't just right in the head
Some times which I'm not a fan of, seeking out a professional vet behaviorist and possibly be on medication to help extreme cases.

Makes perfect sense sometimes we need just to have it pointed out as behaviour problems can seem like overload to humans at times.
My dog is 5 YEARS OLD AND WONT STOP WHINING it’s driving me insane, HE DID IT THE WHOLE 26 hour drive, when people are over, when people aren’t even over, I give him treats ONLY when he’s calm and quiet , but he still won’t stop I even ignore the whining. I don’t know what to do I can’t man
This information is so valuable and totally captures what I try to do with my dogs. :) It might be taken for granted by some owners but I think everyone would agree that this kind of free shaping will bring positive structure to a dog's life. However, (someone please correct if I'm wrong...) a dog might start to associate the reward with the initial problem behavior if they only receive that reward after that whole sequence. So if the reward ONLY comes after "problem behavior > correction > redirection > reinforcement" they may still be associating the problem behavior with the reward. Is this taken into account in classical conditioning? What I try to do with my dogs is reward MORE or with better rewards when my dog is already doing what I want. Then, if I have to do a correction, they still get a reward but it might not always be the best reward. Similar idea: heavy praise and reward (like a special treat) when your dog sits perfectly the first time and stays (we do an implied stay for sit), but maybe just verbal praise if your dog gets up and you have to correct and redirect back into a sit. If they ONLY get what they want after they've already been exhibiting the problem behavior, like barking to get your attention when they want to play, they may continue to exhibit that problem behavior when they want to play. But they will catch on and know that after YOU correct, they just have to be calm to have you tug or throw the toy. This is good for stopping the behavior once it starts, but not as good for eliminating the behavior altogether. With my younger high energy dog, we started having designated play times at certain hours of the day, so my dog knows when to expect them. But I initiate the play session when she is still being calm, usually starting with a few commands (for example -- come, lay, heel, sit), and then play really hard for 10-15 minutes. Then it is meal time or time to go outside or for a walk. I always try to follow play time with another activity to help her de-escalate because she is obsessed with her toys and will never end play time on her own. She used to always initiate play time because she would bring toys to people, drop them in their laps, and whine until the person threw it. This was exhausting and probably terrible for her too! Because she was always the one to initiate play in that manner, that is what she thought she had to do to play. Now that I initiate play when she is still being calm (and keep toys away until it's play time), that behavior has been totally eliminated and the days are much more peaceful. I'm very proud of our girl. What do you guys think?
Edit: I just watched Will's free video course and he talks about exactly this. I trust his perspective SO MUCH! I feel even more confident going forward with this strategy of training. I just bought his paid 30-day course, both because I'm excited to see what's in there and go through it with my two dogs AND because I really want to support him. I appreciate what he does so much.
Adopted a 1 year old rescue today, very useful vid mate, cheers. Calm, quiet and well mannered - this is what i will be trying. Any tops for a little dog who is very food driven i.e won't calm down when it is dinner time?
I never ever have given him positive reward for crying and yet he still does it all day everyday I’ve began to strongly dislike my dog due to this. He doesn’t let me sleep or be in peace. I give him food water and play time regularly but never when he cries. I don’t get it. I’m considering giving him up at this point because I highly regret getting him.
I’m sorry you feel that way… I have my moments to.
I thought I was alone with this feeling. ....ok this is normal
Totally get this !! Exactly what I'm going through.
@@msfishandchips7204I have the exact same problem with one of my big dogs
Literally just hire a behaviorist for a month instead of abandoning a friend. TF kind of people would even think this. My dog whines for food and wolks only and I hate it too, but abandoning him is a non option.
These are some great points. Thank you.
My new puppy came to me with separation anxiety and it’s really bad. He cry’s for hours , it’s so bad in order for me to get sleep I have to allow him to sleep with me. It’s so frustrating but also sad. He’s only 2 months old
THANK YOU for this!!!! It's REALLY workiong well, and both the dog and the family are WAYYYYYYY happier!!! THANK YOU!!!!
We have a whippet beagle mix dog that loves to be outside so much that EVERY single time we let him out he screams, whines, and yelps like he's been beaten senseless and is in serious pain.
He freaks out at the door when we walk up to it to let him out and starts to bark/howl with excitement, but then we open the door and he tears off into the yard screaming at the top of his little lungs, which is so loud it makes our ears ring. He's perfectly healthy, he's not in pain or being abused, he just acts like he never goes outside and each time he goes it's like the first time he's ever been out, again and again.
I'd like to know what this could mean and how to stop it, because no amount of getting him to sit or be quiet makes it stop and in some cases makes him do it louder in an impatient manner. He's also aggressive and selfish with our bigger Rottweiler dog who cowers in fear at this little dwarf of a thing that tries to snap at his neck from time to time. Our Whippet is definitely a territorial little monster but he's never actually physically hurt our Rottweiler in the process, just scares the everloving piss out of him.
They don't get along very well and we think it might be because our Whippet is more of a single-dog family type than a multi-dog family type. Plus he was the first one in the house, so maybe he thinks he owns the place and doesn't have to share or has a right to be greedy like an entitled teenager. I don't know what the problem with him is, but the screaming has to stop. I'm honestly surprised the neighbors haven't called animal control or PETA on us yet with how frequently he screams like he's being murdered.
My dogs rule me, they see me as Alfa but I think I’ve loved them too much, thanks for your video time to change so I can have time for me 🙏😊
If they saw you as Alpha, they wouldn’t be ruling you
This is so helpful and easy to understand. Thanks for sharing it.
My dog cries if she needs to go to the toilet or if somebody in the family goes out/is sleeping 😭
My families dog, learned this behaviour. The only way to fix it, is if the entire family cooperates in fixing our dogs behaviour. However, my father, mother and brother, are all ignorant of how we are to fix the problem. I have tried countless times to explain to them, they just won’t listen.
i have the same problem lol
It's usually the people/parents doings.... not very many innately bad dogs/kids.
Thank you so much Will. Your the best.😊
😫we have a foster dog that we decided to adopt. He's deaf and he was neglected in his previous home. We are having so much trouble with him and his whining. It's making me crazy and I do not know how to fix it.
This is an issue I am dealing with for almost 2 years now. Nothing has worked so far. I have diligently tried many methods. The problem I have encountered that seems like an unending cycle is that even with Challenge, Redirect, Reinforce method what happens is it turns into a chain of behavior instead of eliminating the behavior: whine, calm down, get reinforcement.
At least with my dog that’s what has been happening. And the more i try this the bigger the more steps the chain of actions include.
I would love to hear your opinion on this. This is a huge problem now for me and seems an impossible task to get rid of. I am very much willing to listen to your opinion over a coaching call session.
In our case the behavior occurs as an emotional response to desired activities outdoors. Including the act of getting out itself.
I have this exact problem, she goes quiet after whining then get rewarded but starts again as she knows noise plus quiet after equals food, the wine has stayed and even if I generally reward the quiet through the day as soon as I stop giving rewards for a day or two she starts again I can't faze out the treats even a bit, I can ask for a sit or down and reward after the shh but then after the reward she starts the whining again it never stops and hasn't for a year now, I can ignore the whining all day long she will go on for hours still, she will make noise so long I will get complaints from neighbours
@@hammond5594yeah. Sometimes the dog trains us 😉
Routine. Dog gets out on a schedule i set. He can rely on it. He's working me tho ... looks at the keys hangin on the wall, then at me. Then I'll take him to his pee spot, but nothing more.
A great tip for the circumstance enumerated. However my puppy often cries for me at sunup as that is when I get up to feed her. She is hungry, but I am already preparing her food, so when I appear with the food, the crying might be justified. However I feel that my company is more important to her than the food, as when I put the food down, she has a mouthful and then wants to play. Am I rewarding her crying, because it won't stop until I appear. If I do appear without food she is very happy and stops whining until I go off to get her food. How do I deal with that?
I’m pregnant and my irritation towards my dogs get worse every time he cries. He get walked, get feed, he’s healthy, so I know that this crying is more of a demand. Going to try to train my dog again, but there’s a family member that reinforces his bad. That’s my only issue
What do you do when they escalate to howling and you returning to the room because of the noise and now returning represents a reward???
My dog has been fine, she has her own little couch she always slept on at night. But these last 3 days she's been whining and won't stop until I let her in my room. I can't let her just whine cause my mom needs to sleep for work. I don't think she's in any kind of pain cause the second I let her on my bed she lays down and sleeps peacefully. But when I get up to go get something she has to get up and come with me. Nothing's changed in the house, kind of puzzling me. Shes eating and drinking fine, take her to the park for walks, out to use the bathroom. Kind of puzzling me. Shes about 12yrs old good condition.
... my 11 yr old started crying when she laid down at night. I'd get on the floor next to her & soothe her to sleep.
She passed about 6 mo later.
Dogs tell us what they need. 😪. I miss her. But am so glad I "listened".
God bless
Thank you for your videos man ❤
my 9 month old started whining out of no where in the mornings. never whined in his life before except after surgery, now he whines and goes to the door i think he’s trying to demand he goes out to playa and for a walk
My dog has NEVER been rewarded or received positive feedback for his crying. And it is INTENSE. He can’t stand being kept from us. Whether in the kennel or behind the baby gate while we’re in the bathroom.
This is the same for my puppy Corso
Hope this helps someone. If you have a new puppy that cries at night sit it somewhere up high where it can see you. I did it with my puppy first time dog owner and she stopped immediately. A chair right by the bed. After I gradually put her cage on the floor and she has been fine ever since.
My puppy has started to whine and beg for food right before her scheduled meal times. I’m struggling to come up with a solution, because not giving her food gives her a valid reason to whine, because it is meal time, but feeding her a meal after whining can’t be good long term.
If a cat wants something they would just give you that lightskin stare 💀
What if the whining is because they are excited to see us or a certain visitor? Coming home, waking up in the morning, fun visitors my dog become uncontrollable. Whining obsessively and circling the person(s). I wish he would calm down with a command. I have tried the ignore until I get behavior I desire but it seems it makes it worse. What is your suggestion?
I deal with this too
Now I understand but also confused, we have a 9/10 week old pup through the day fine, as soon as night comes we leave him the crying, howling clawing comes out we try the Shh and works for 5 minutes then repeats, the only thing that stops it is company but we also have been told not to ignore him so what are we meant to actually do?
Thanks Will !
I have A8 week old puppy very intelligent. She is a Jack Russell terrier. My previous dog, which was my service dog for very long time, passed at 13 years of age last Friday. So I bought this one to train it as well. But she.
Seems to have separation anxiety. Every time I leave, I have tried slapping the door and saying shush, but within seconds she will start to wine again even ignoring her for an hour she won't shut up. I live in an apartment. And I know she will be a good dog. I just have to get her to understand you cannot be doing that each time I leave the room with my previous dog. I could literally spray her with a water gun on and say shush. She fairly quickly realized not to do that and could not understand how I was telling her to be quiet and I was touching her from the other side of the room. But this little guy she is another story
My 10 yr old Kelpie x is beautifully behaved until we go walking.
As soon as another dog is met on the walk my Eva starts whining extremely loudly and wants to get to the other dog (to play). When we start to leave the whining begins again.
Any ideas to help because I enjoy walking her but it gets so difficult trying to avoid where other dogs are walking.
Socialise, socialise, socialise!
My dog won't stop whining when she sees other dogs on walks or when she's home I socialized her as a puppy and she was fine at the dog park but after she hit a year she won't stop whining.
So we have a 1 year old working Spaniel and we are her 3rd home, when we leave her to go out she howls and barks sometimes for 15 minutes sometimes up to an hour? She has a routine and she knows we come back and people come in to let her out ? How do we stop this
What about puppies that keep crying, if theres people in the room and one person leaves he immediately starts crying like he forgets theres people still there. But we tried to fix his crying from the beginning, ignoring him when he did cry and rewarded when he was crying.
My dog is squeaking when I go for walk with her and my kids. And I did not reward her for it. I have no idea what to do. I paid for the trainer and she said that my dog just likes to talk, so I have to be ok with that or don't take her for walk with the kids. Which doesn't help at all. Any ideas
I love your videos but I found the style of this one difficult to watch due to the flicking back and forth to the text. Could also potentially be an issue if someone has epilepsy. Just wanted to mention as I do love watching your videos and think you’re great!
It worked!!!
how long did it take you to fix it?
I adopted a dog from my sister, she kepted him in a crate outside for the 1st 6 months she had him.....he doesnt stay in a crate with me, but he cries everytime i leave and when i come home.....my niehbors are complaining
I dont know if its fixable, he was mistreated , i cant give my other dog a walk with him crying and whining the whole time. any advice?
Honestly my boy whinges more than he breathes. I've no idea why. I know his cues and we never rewarded the behavior when he was a pup.
Any advice on how to stop my lab whinning early in the morning? She wakes up as the sun comes us, so about an hour earlier then she needs to. She doesn't need the toilet just seems like she's up so wants us up. When I get up and come downstairs I ignore her and go to the kitchen and walk past for a few minutes and have done this forever but the whinning is still the same
Having the same problem with my unneutered lab, it’s annoying.
Same issue with my adopted stray. Let us sleep one hour more for christ sake 😂
My dog won't stop crying after I took him to dog park...he been going on for 2 days ...never happened
What about if my little idiot screeches whenever I use the hose in the garden, mow with my human powered mower, or use the weed wacker? These are things I enjoy doing and, in some cases, need to do every day. I just adopted this boy who is young and rambunctious, which is fine, but I need to be able to do common daily chores without losing my mind.
Have you tried having the pup in the crate out of view of these things?
@@francisrodriguez3648 he doesn’t have a crate. He goes on his box in the dog grotto outside when I’m not home or on his run when I’m working outside. He goes apeshit when he can’t see me too. I live in Alaska so it’s not hot.
My dog starts screaming when any type of music comes on at any time. Idk what to do I tried everything now she gets time out ad even that is not working
I did nothing. I wonder if it started with doggy daycare and professional training with treats. He started seeing me as the treat machine. Either that or I just chose the wrong dog. We are both making each other prerry unhappy at this stage. I did none of these things and it drives me nuts. Might have to give the dog away if it doesn't stop

Here’s what I don’t understand when I watch videos on how to train my pup. What do I do when I can’t attend their wants. I have a puppy the whines to the point of a child screaming that I’m trying to correct yet what about the times I can’t give attention. I’m busy cooking, or trying to shower, ect. Is it ok to just completely ignore them. Or am I making the behavior worse that way.
Ignoring them can be an option, as it lets them know they won’t get your positive attention that way (I ignore my border when he’s whining, because it’s always tor attention, then I give the attention he wants when he’s calm).
However, could be worth checking if there are any legitimate reasons they’re crying first - is it severe separation anxiety (when you disappear to shower) or are they trying to tell you something?
I did not unconsciously teach my dog to whine. I just adopted him 31/2 wks ago) and I simply want his whining to stop. It goes on & on & on.
I have been using the perfect puppy course and have some specific questions about my sweet pup, but my Facebook group request is taking a long time to get approved? Anybody have tips for me?
My gf's dog squeals like a banshee every time he sees somebody come home, it's a new thing and... It's unbelievably bad 😅
I would love you to train my dog and myself, its seriously lead reactive towards other dogs to the point its swinging off the lead and barking like crazy, i know its not in aggression but more it wants to meet and play. Once its off the lead it doesnt really bother with other dogs and just plays fetch with me. It just gets embarrassing and awkward when im just on a peaceful walk with him. I have ordered a slip lead and will be using your videos to help myself learn so i can teach the dog correctly but do you have any tips for me as its very stressful when it doesnt even listen once it notices another dog. Other than this he is great. Also what are your thoughts with the figure 8 lead?
Does this work on dogs with separation anxiety?
Is this video relevant to my 2 month old puppy?
My dog cries insanely wherever I leave the house. No peace in the house or the neighbourhood. Have no idea what to do. I can’t go to the shops or the gym.
Have you considered an online course to teach potential trainers? I'd love to be able to do things like this for my brothers dogs for example, but living in Ireland would make it impossible to visit. Charging to teach would still bring you an income?
He has a few books that can be a lot of help! 😊
What happens if your puppy/dog cries in the mornings in its crate when it probably needs the toilet? Do you let it out as it’s crying for a reason, but will that then become a learnt behaviour of crying to get out? Or do you persist with the crate taps and get it to shush before coming out?🥲
how do I use this when he whines at night when he goes in the crate? The only thing I want him to do is go to go to sleep. My husband works early in the morning and his whining wakes my husband in the middle of the night.
Hey Will! What do brand of treat bag do you use for your training sessions? I want to get a good high quality treat pack to go around my waist.
I think he uses his own brand, the Fenrir ones, which you can buy from the website!
I understand my dog has trained me to Get what je wants. The problem is he is a pom, so he has 2 types of barking one the normal bark i can handle all day everyday. The other one sounds like a squeaky toy. And i can’t handle listening to it to long. It drives me nuts, so i give in. And thats what is my problem,
I got a 15.5 yr old llapso, a 16 yr old shitzu, another 11 yr old shitzu and a 9 yr old Yorkie who cry when I leave. I live alone. Thankfully I live in a home where neighbors don't care. Last like 3 minutes.
When you shout/tell them to be quiet do they? If so I have a ring camera inside overlooking the downstairs and when I used to leave for work I'd turn it on and when the dog started to bark I would shout down the camera for him to be quiet and he would. He doesn't bark anymore when I leave. Not saying this will work just maybe an idea to try. Also you don't need a ring camera, you can pick cheap ones up online.

Does this all depend on age too ?
So what do you do when the whining starts when you leave the house. Please address separation anxiety whining

FINALLY THEY LAID DOWN AFTER WHINING
Ive beed over 100 puppies. The one i have laft over roght now has a problem feom birth with crying. The cause of my dogs crying is people in my house WILL NOT stop treating my dogs and they do it when they're excited and crying.. I've tried and tried and tried and they treat them on the sly when I'm not looking or if I go out to the bin even, they get ham and biscuits at every opportunity and its got to the point they both piss me off from the second they open they're eyes to the second they go to sleep they moan and beg.. treats for waking up and going to bed and going to the toilet and if they jump and beg and howl. I may have to rehome them and it's not even my fault.. you must hear people say that all the time but I promise in this case its true. Do you have any advice?

Recently he has started whining for attention again and I feel like it’s cause my roommates mess with him while I’m at work, even though I’ve asked them not to.
My puppy never stops whining. She only gets louder. I'm concerned apartment neighbors will start complaining if I continue to ignore the behavior.

How do you get 4 of them to stop though? Sounds like a Walt Disney movie in my home everytime I leave!
Just stop buying multiple dogs until you mastered how to train one
Why did you get 4 dogs? Thats trifling …
tried everything here but i think my dog just whines everytime she's feelign something tbh. not satisfied with her nap spot? she whines then gets up the lies down somewhere else. she whines for anything and everything so it's very hard to address. i just can't stand it it's driving me fucking nuts

Can you stop it while he is in a cage?
I'm from Kharkiv, Ukraine. My 2yo German shepherd is howling at air-raid siren every night. It mostly happens at night (rarely at day time) when she wakes up from these alerts and she howls only at "Danger threat" (3-minute repeated long bursts) and never howls at "End of danger" (1-minute continuous tone). She was rised with those sirens in a way, and as anyone could expect sometimes these are followed by explosion sounds.
When I'm not asleep I try to cut this howling shortly by consoling her, but maybe this is not the right course of action?

Yeah there's a thing called leash aggression and basically dogs on a leash misbehave more because the aggression and fear of not being able to get away build and compound
@@jimmyspitler3151 question is, how to deal with it? Lol
Fenrir has some good videos on it but basically reward the dog ignoring other dogs and start slow passing closer to another friend with a dog... I have corso and had to teach this as they passed a very aggressive dog inside a fence on our walk... started off far away from the fence and walked quickly passed an rewarded good behavior then worked closer every day and if there is a dog approaching us maybe it's off leash i taught them to lay on their side until i let them free takes a bit to get there but that one is really worth it. Walked on a trail and two large horses passed us while my dogs were laying on their side and the horse owners gave us a lot of praise
