Watermelon with cheese is something older people like a lot, my father likes to eats it for lunch. Something even stranger is watermelon with pepper stew (chushkena mandzha).

It's an odd combination to us but seems to work. Rachel likes it. Not tried the pepper stew variation so will need to look out for that one.

Thanks very much for sharing one of my favourite cities. I purchased a property 35 minutes drive from Ruse after failing in love with the city. .Looking forward to moving there permanently In not so distant future. Greetings from James J in Limerick city Ireland

Sorry I haven’t been watching the comments enough. We are a similar distance from Ruse. It’s a nice little city that has all you need but is still relaxed. Thanks for watching the video.

As to the watermelon and chesse combination, this is very common here in BG. It is typical for the Hot summer months when you need something ligher.

Ruse = Little Vienna. Hay if you ever find anywhere selling lamb... let me know here.
The only meat in the whole of Bulgaria is Pork, Chicken or Turkey. I'll give it to them, they can make Pork steak taste like beef stake. But you can't buy beef in Ruse. Maybe at the German supermarkets you can buy Irish beef. But Happy stake is pork my friend.

Yeah you’re right it is little Vienna. The steak in Happy is definitely proper beef. They’ve got pretty good and actually have a restaurant in London now. They do tend to sell veal in supermarkets mainly but beef is starting to come in now. In Lidl they usually have beef steaks from Argentina, USA and like you said I’ve also seen Irish. Metro is also pretty good for it.

@@emzfamily OK, i have to renew may car insurance this month in Ruse, i will go to Happy and ask. But i have been there many times and it is pork steak. It is adult pig not young piglet like in UK that's why the meat is dark. The meat in England is from baby animals. You don't find adult animals on your plate in UK.
You can get a beef steak in Hotel Cosmopolitan opposite Plan B night club in Ruse but it is a silver service restaurant and very expensive. But they will cook it blue (extra rare) so it will bleed all over the plate. Lovely! That is my treat.
German supermarkets like Lidl and Kaufland sell all meats but they will not cook you a meal. I do not cook for myself. Cooking food is for crazy people in this heat.
They also sell salmon and crab but not North Atlantic fish like Cod or Haddock. (The only thing i miss form England is the food).
There is only so much Chicken, Pork and Turkey i can stomach.
The only other place i can find beef is beefburger in Macdonald's, (Varna, Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo, Sunny Beach), all other fast food places in Bulgaria are Hamburger (i.e. pig).
I have never found lamb outside Sofia. I will pay good money for a meal with lamb chops. But even fresh venison would be ok if i could find any in a restaurant. I do not like dry cured venison. I like it hot with potato.
      Anyway enjoy Bulgaria !

@@paulagreen8386 you’ll like the new Hesburger in Ruse then which is pretty much a Finish version of McDonalds. They have proper beef in their burgers too. Not sure I would call it fast food though. It takes ages to get stuff but I think it’s because it’s really popular with home delivery orders.

@@emzfamily Thank you for the info. I will go in 3 weeks time. I just looked it up on Google maps. It is around the corner from Happy and in the same direction i have to walk to go to my insurance broker. Maybe Bulgaria is opening up it's taste to western foods. Happy days for me.... all we need now is a fish and chip shop with battered haddock and chips cooked in beef fat!
BTW.... the only thing in Bulgaria that is "FAST" is the way people drive... as soon as they get out of their cars, they go as slow as they can. LOL. Enjoy!

Lamb is more traditional Bulgarian meat, but not more popular anymore. Older generations would prefer lamb over pork.

Emily prefers the watermelon because she can recognise the good stuff. She would never have a watermelon like that one in the UK.
