  • How to cut golf clubs and regrip them at home. - In this video, I take you through the process of removing grips, cutting your irons and re-griping them with the Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2G grips. It wasn’t until after I purchased my “off the shelf” standard irons that I realized the importance of having clubs fitted to me. After getting fitted for my putter and being measured for irons, I decided to make the commitment to shorten my clubs to fit me. Watch this video to learn how to cut your steel shafts and regrip your clubs at home.

    To remove the grip, you run the hook blade flat to the shaft, not vertical like you did. That way, you don't cut tape (just the grip), and the tape can be re-used. Just activate it with solvent and slide on your new grip.

    Pipe cutters work much better for steel shafts. Quicker and straighter as well. Fine hacksaw for graphite only

    Standard pipe cutter works the best for me.

    How about cutting a graphite shaft? Is the process different?

    • @SeekingBirdiesGolf
      @SeekingBirdiesGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not cut graphite shafts before but yes, the process is different because the graphite can splinter. Thanks for watching!

    Swingweight?

  • @bammbamm12

    The shaft narrows top to bottom. Will the grip be snug on a shorter shaft? The diameter of the shaft gradually reduces.

    • @SeekingBirdiesGolf
      @SeekingBirdiesGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Sorry for the delayed response. It is narrower but not by enough to effect the grip. I think you would have to remove quite a bit to effect it. You could always double/triple wrap tape to add back to the size

    When selecting ferrules, do you recommend using ferrules that butt up against the hassle or recommend ferrules that are tapered that fit inside the hassle?

    • @SeekingBirdiesGolf
      @SeekingBirdiesGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Neal, thanks for reaching out! I would not be able to give you any info about ferrules. That would be a great question for a club maker. I only know the basics of re-gripping and minor mods to the clubs. Thanks for the support!

    Is it better to cut at the grip end or head end of the shaft? Also I saw you used a hand saw. I have been recommended to he use either a dremel or a tube cutter.

    • @SeekingBirdiesGolf
      @SeekingBirdiesGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Definitely use a tube/pipe cutter... a lot easier and cleaner. As for what end to cut, ideally you would cut at both ends and adjust for swing weight with ballast. That said, I cut from the grip end as I’m not setup to reattach the club head in my shop. Thanks for the comment!

    Before cutting down my putter, I removed the grip without ruining it so I could reuse it, I cut the length down on my putter & put the grip back on, I let it sit overnight, but when I went to putt a few balls noticed the top half of the grip is lose, I’m just wondering if that’s from cutting the shaft down or from reusing the grip... I’ve never had any issues re gripping before until cutting the length down, I have taken many grips off before & reused them with no issues... just wondering if you have any thoughts on this before I restart this process... thank you

    • @SeekingBirdiesGolf
      @SeekingBirdiesGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only thing is if the grip has been stretched and now has a wider end than before. I would double up the wrap at the end of the shaft to add more width and that should work. Also, make sure the shaft is clean of all residue by wiping it with mineral spirits. If it doesn’t have a good bond it can slip. I have had this happen on a club when I used a thicker grip, found the grip was secure but it had so much material that it felt like it was loose. I would start with adding an extra wrap or two on the end of the shaft to build it up.

    What was your method of determining the length you needed? Thanks

    • @SeekingBirdiesGolf
      @SeekingBirdiesGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did not use a specific rule; but rather I found the length that felt natural while allowing me to get the club to have a better lie angle when I took a swing. It was a "band-aid" fix until I got properly fitted for new clubs. Thanks!

    I'm about to order clubs online. If I order the irons 1/2 inch short, will the lie angle and swing weight be changed just as if I had shortened them myself?

    Your channel is definetely a step above most other videos here. The quality is good, the content is interesting, and the over all editing is on par........ I couldn't resist....
    Seriously, your channel has a lot of potential. I have a few ideas on how to improve the video you sent me How to cut golf clubs and regrip them at home
    I think you need to have a liitle more energy when you talk. You don't seem as enthusiastic as you need to be. Also maybe keep the music going in the backround while your talking might be a good idea too.
    other than that, its the best video i've seen all day :D

    • @SeekingBirdiesGolf
      @SeekingBirdiesGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and give feedback. I totally understand about the energy. I have found it’s inconsistent and I’m working on that. Thank you! The music is my weakness. I have been practicing different methods and will play with keeping it in the background. Thanks again for your time!

    Shortening a golf club will lead to reduction in swing weight noticeably. Unfortunately, how to correct this issue was not addressed in this video.

    Working too hard. Use your vice to remove the old grip. Cut at an angle to save the tape and avoid marking up the shaft. When cutting the shaft again use the vice. I was seeing way to much movment in that shaft as you cut. You got it done but you make it look to hard.

  • @SeekingBirdiesGolf

    Would YOU ever cut your clubs? Or leave it up to the club maker at the shop?

    • @martinfregoso8785

      How did you end up liking the clubs after cutting them down and how much was cut off? I’m 5’6” with a 31 inch wrist to floor thinking about cutting my clubs as well.

    • @SeekingBirdiesGolf
      @SeekingBirdiesGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin Fregoso I love them. I cut mine mostly to compensate for the lie angle. I tried bending the heads but they did not hold so cutting them was the next option. If you do not have the proper tools, find them or have a club maker do it.

      Seeking Birdies Golf, awesome will definitely cut mine down a bit, thank you for the great content.

  • @danielkelly8756

    When you cut the shaft like you did - even though someone should definitely just buy a cheap pipe cutter - you should put much more of the shaft into the vice so the part your cutting is right off the edge of the vice, otherwise the piece will flex and be difficult to cut, it could also potentially bend like that.
    This is bad tutorial and could result in people making irreversable mistakes with their clubs. Personally I would delete the video.
