  • I explain the new Amazon movie ‘Sound of Metal’ starring Riz Ahmed and directed by Darius Marder, as well as the ending and what it all means. It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in 2020

There is nothing wrong with being deaf and I love this movie for showing ppl that. I’m an asl student and I’m hearing. So many misconceptions exist like that implants will change hearing back to “normal” .

Joe saying you’re acting like an addict right now was a mic drop moment. He’s addicted to his old life and unwilling to accept and move on.

“Discovering stillness” Is exactly what I took away from this film. I’m at a point in my life where I had to delete all my social media and basically disconnect from all social circles to gain a sense of peace back. When he took the implants off at the end, that’s how the whole experience has felt. Silence and stillness is better sometimes.

As someone who makes music for a living. This movie was a thriller/ horror

Lou just bounced out without comforting him or nothing. 4 years together, he goes deaf and she leaves the next day on a plane. She didn’t say I love you after he was pouring his heart out to her when she was getting in a cab. Im sorry but she probably didn’t love him that much. If someone you love deeply goes deaf or any other trouble, you’re supposed to get support and love from your significant other.

Anyone else notice how the last thing Ruben heard with the implants was the sounds of the metal church bell clanging before he takes the receiver off and the movie goes silent

I think he finally embraced his loss with peace at the end

I love the dual meaning in the title. The 'Sound of Metal' being the tinny sound of the implant as well as the reference to music.

i think he couldve stayed with her new life but he would have to change. accept that he doesnt hear music while playing it. actually, wait, his gf is a singer and he hears it only partially. yeah thats contradictory. brutal. had to give up on music altogether

There was such a critical piece of dialogue in this movie where Joe asks how long Ruben has been clean, to which he says 4 years. He then asks how long he's known Lou, to which he says 4 years. Its there that you make the connection she helped him through his addiction if not becoming his next addiction.

"Joe is clearly not happy with what he's hearing" I'm sorry but that made me laugh lmao.

Great explanation man. Just saw the movie last night and wanted to hear what others said about the movie. And you did just that. This guy should win the Oscar for best actor and definitely sound design!

Went through a similar break up and the ending legit tore me up.

Good review, this was exactly my take on the overarching theme. The inevitability of change and how you deal with it. There's other lesser themes too that are important as well, such as addiction, medical care and of course love/romance. But the dominant and most important theme is the theme of change.

I took the comment about his sounding like an addict as being related to being addicted to sound, not to Lou.
