    FINALLY, someone else sees Ganymede's potential for future space missions. So many people get caught up on the Mars hype and even Jupiter's arguably much deadlier moon Europa constantly overshadows it in pop culture and astronomy they view Ganymede as a boring icy rock and overlook it's unique attributes, like size, magnetosphere and subsurface ocean.

There may be a lot more underneath that muddy-brown icy crust than meets the eye is all I'm saying and I'm glade ESA is finally sending a dedicated mission to study it up close.

    Good Video Alan!!
    I'm a really big fan of The Expanse, liked the TV, and am currently in mid Book.6 of the books series.. Super well done story writing and good believable Sci-Fi!
    In my opinion, the idea of Ganymede being habitable is totally within the realm of possibility. The fact that Ganymede has a magnetosphere is a really big plus, and would lend itself to being used as was done in the Expanse series!
    Also, digging down into the ice, and building out in tunnels would provide really good radiation protection along with the magnetosphere of he moon.

Colonists would either live on Callisto (the least amount of radiation, even lower than Earth) or move all of their infrastructure undergrounds. I am curious if that makes it easier since the surface is now your radiate on shielding, plus 3 of the moons may have liquid subsurface oceans, so that's a nice bonus.

    • @AlexandarHullRichter
      @AlexandarHullRichter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Even if Ganymede was bigger than Earth, it would still be a moon because it's orbiting Jupiter, not the sun.
      I had this thought after the debate about Pluto. I thought the gas giants were probably looking at Earth and Venus, thinking 'how the heck are those tiny rocks considered planets?'

    • @lanebowles8170
      @lanebowles8170 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@AlexandarHullRichter Once an object achieves hydrostatic equilibrium (in other words it becomes a sphere) it is more about how dominate it is in its orbit rather than sheer size.
      The reason Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet is because there are great deal of other objects in its general orbit, some of which are nearly its size. Since it hasn't cleared out its orbit by either consuming smaller objects or ejecting them by way of gravity, it is not gravitationally dominate in its orbit (the fact that Pluto is stuck in a 3-2 orbital resonance with Neptune doesn't help its argument as a full planet either). Since it has achieved hydrostatic equilibrium it qualifies as a dwarf planet rather than a asteroid or kuiper belt object.
      One interesting fact about Pluto is that it is currently (to my knowledge) the only known Double-Planet of any kind. A double-planet is where two objects are so close in size/mass and orbit that they orbit a point around each other rather than one effectively orbiting the other. Pluto's so call "moon" Charon doesn't technically orbit Pluto or anypoint within it. Instead they both orbit a point (barycenter) some kilometers above Pluto's surface thus technically qualifying as a double-planet/binary system.

    • @EuropaWill
      @EuropaWill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lanebowles8170 The Earth and it's Moon are another double planet system if the definition is that the two objects are orbiting a common barycenter and not one orbiting the other. Liked your post btw!

    • @lanebowles8170
      @lanebowles8170 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EuropaWill Incorrect! (unless there is an official definition that supports your claim that I am unaware of?)
      If two objects that are orbiting a common barycenter and not one orbiting the other was the definition of a double planet then all planets with moons would be counted as such. The difference between a double-planet system as compared to a planet-moon system is the fact that the barycenter of the double planet is outside the physical dimensions of either object. Since the Earth-Moon barycenter is more than a thousand kilometers beneath the Earth surface, the Earth-Moon system is not a double planet system, though it does come by far closest of all the recognized "full" planets.
      But here is another discussion that should be had. What do you call a system where a star and its planet's barycenter is outside either of them, such as is the case with our sun and Jupiter? Can't be a double planet as they are not both planets. Can't be a double star since they are not both stars. Is there a name for such a star-planet system? I know of none.

    As a fun sidenote, any colonization of Ganymede will likely see thr use of a combination of aquaponics and aerponics (likely forogpomics).
    Water would be desalinated, anf put in a tank, from sh introduced to grow as a food and fertilizer source. This water is thrm aerosolized at the root zone reducing nutrient and water requirements for the plant to the minimal allowing you to produce more plant with less water and nutrient.

    In many ways, Ganymede would be the best natural satellite to colonize. Firstly, Ganymede has a magnetic field, which would protect settlements against radiation without having to be underground bunkers. Also partially thanks to this magnetic field, Ganymede is just about the only moon that could be classically terraformed (made Earthlike and thus habitable). The closest we could ever hope to terraform the other moons of our solar system would be to dome them over.

    Moving to Ganymede is hard, that's why it will be just a base for filling Mars and Venus with Ganymede water after terraforming.

    • @futeramonfuturamet4830

      Actually, Ganymede has similar potential to Venus and Mars to be a world people live on long term or permanently and has a diverse economy. Once we get crewed missions and colonization of the middle solar system (the part of our solar system where the gas planets are), Ganymede and Collisto will likely be ground zero for settlements in the region.

    You probably wouldnt ship soil to other planets. You would ship microbes specially tailored to process sterile soil into something more useful. Then you just need some good silicate asteroids shipped into orbit and some key elements shipped in in bulk like nitrogen (available from earth or venus, the latter of which we want to remove a lot of if we are going to terraform it, along with cooling venus off enough that the Co2 in its atmosphere precipitates out as a solid so we can easily get it out of venues' atmosphere before we warm it back up to habitable temperatures). Hydroponics or aeroponics will still likely be the order of the day, but only until your food and oxygen production plants produce enough waste biomass to make soil on site.

  • @marinerproductions1315

    I actually came up with a little scenario in my head about how in the late 23rd Century, Ganymede was home to the capital city of a collection of colonies on a few of Jupiter's moons, such as Europa and Callisto, that by 2299 AD, became an independent nation called the Republic of Jupiter. This was one of five different planetary governments that humanity had set up as it colonized the Solar System over the last 2 1/2 centuries. The others were the Republic of Terra, based on Earth, the Republic of Luna, based on Earth's Moon, the Republic of Mars, and the Republic of Asteron, which was made up of several different asteroid colonies in the Asteroid Belt. These five nations were then part of a economic, political, and military alliance called the United Republics of Sol, or URS. There is a lot more to my scenario then just that, but I think its a pretty cool scenario. What do you think?

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, right. Just like we have on Earth, only one nation...
      I don't see different jovian moons under the same flag except for commercial or military unions. Just like nations on Earth.
      And the worst thing on that issue is the bloody "Earth is one nation" every sci-fi book/film/series/... happening near the Earth shows.

    • @nobleman9393
      @nobleman9393 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @angelrivera2339
      @angelrivera2339 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sounds interesting. I am curious as to the pressures that caused the formation of these nations. Nations are formed mostly for mutual protection and interests. People think that there will be no world government ignore the fact that until now there is no need for one.

    • @marinerproductions1315
      @marinerproductions1315 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angelrivera2339, for Luna, Mars, Asteron, and Jupiter, they were all former colonies of Terra. The way it works is that once a colony is well, fully colonized, and is stable enough so that there likely won't be any civil wars or revolutions or anything like that, they become independent, with compensation from Terra and/or the other Solar republics, depending on which colony it is. The ROT formed after a massive 3rd World War occurred in the early 21st Century between two major factions, a union of capitalist nations called the Republic of Terra, or West Terra, and a union of communist nations called the Democratic People's Republic of Terra, or East Terra, which left over 2 billion people dead. After the war, pretty much everybody left on Earth realized that the different nation-states on Earth constantly fighting each other, especially when there were already major environmental issues threatening to leave the planet in ruins, that they finally decided to unite all of the nations on Earth under one central government, which ended up being the Republic of Terra.
