I love the Holga! I love trying different things with the Holga. Some of the things I’ve done over the years with the Holga: 1. Take out that plastic piece that crops the frame to exactly 6x6. It allows an even better vignette and it blurs the edges of photo which really creates an interesting effect. Without the crop in place, it’s a good idea to tape the top of the two edges where the film runs over to allow for smooth operation. 2. With that plastic piece out, I set the camera to 16 exposures. If I take photos from left to right at 16 exposures I can get some really cool panoramas. You’ll get some overlap but it adds to the effect. I’ve contact printed these in the past and made cool bookmarks. 3. I put a 35mm roll in there with some cardboard on the top and bottom to keep it in place. You might also need to tape the leader to the take up spool. I put a piece of tape over the winder with an arrow. This allows me to turn it 1.5 turns for each frame. It creates a cool effect where you get the picture going over the sprocket holes. Have fun!
Was thinking about picking up a Holga, just watched all your videos, and now I definitely will. Can't wait to start shooting with it. It seems so in the spirit of art, zero expectations to how it turns out, just doing it for the love of it.
This carefree shooting experience reminds me of shooting with the Ilford Sporti medium format camera lately, just without the risk of the back coming loose!
Black electrical tape is a Wilko 50p godsend. I just don't know how anyone wouldn't take the two minutes to seal up their camera regardless considering the work cost and effort involved in exposing a film...
Mostly Holga light leaks are caused by the film not being wound tightly onto the take up spool (light coming from the sides of the spool, resulting in vertical streaks on some of the pictures). Newer Holgas have a little sponge to tighten the film, but they wear down soon. Make sure you really tighten the film when putting it in. If the first rounds are not tight, the whole film will be loose! To be sure open the camera in a changing bag and tighten the film then (or just put it onto the reel of the developing tank at the same time)!

With my Holga I apply the two metal back side closing thingies the other way round so that the holes point to the top and act as a strap lug. This ensures that the camera back does not pop open accidentally.
Try Tessa Tape instead of insulation tape. It's fabric, it moulds round shapes, is low tack and leaves no residue. It even provides a better grip. It works on the bellows of a folder, and to cover the red window which is a common light leak source on some folders. I use it on slrs where the the foam is starting to deteriorate. It's proven such a good product that I always keep a roll in my camera bag. It was designed for wrapping older car wiring looms, and is available cheaply online.
I never tried multiple exposures (except by accident with my pinhole...) so don't quote me on that but I read that if ou want to take a double exposure, underexpose about 1 stop for each shot to avoid overexposure at the end (1.5 stops for each shot during a triple exposure, and so on). It makes sense as you expose twice the same negative so you put twice the amount of light needed to expose correctly
I'm really happy to see you trying multiple exposure shots! I like the train tracks photo! It seems to me that you often compose shots based off of lines and shapes and I think that composition style can be used to create interesting multiple exposure photos. Also, if you haven't already, I think you should take a look at Harry Callahan's double exposure photos of streets in Chicago. You may find some of his other double exposure photos interesting, too.
I love my Holga more and more as the years go by. I don't actually think they are for beginners either...I think the more you know about shooting the better your results (as you've shown) are. There is no other digital or film camera that gives me this look and I just dig it. By the way, you have your clips on upside-down on yours and maybe that's why they pop off so easy? I only have a bit of tape over the red window and have one of my wife's pony tail elastics around the camera and don't get any light leaks or doors popping off. My setup is either my 120N or my new 120 GFCN (for night flash) and both have a 46 to 49mm step up ring screwed into the lens so I can throw a red filter on and I shoot almost exclusively with Ilford XP2 since it's SO forgiving. Great shots you got and I do love that triple exposure!
Thanks Patrick. I didn't realise they were upside down! The red window is taped inside so when I flip it to 15 shots its blacked out from inside. So I can flip it to 12 to see my next frame.
I haven't got a Holga but a Coronet Flashmaster from the 50's. It is so similar right down to the side clips. F14, 1/35 sec, 120 film. I must give it a go. Your results are impressive and you get good sharpness.
I love Holgas, I have about a dozen of them from 6x6 to 6x12 and pinhole ... it's a great way to just go crazy and not worry about all the technical side of photography 9i do that) ... as far as feeding the birds and getting arrested, about 20 years ago when my cats died, I started feeding birds and taking photos of them. My neighbors complained to the town and if i feed birds, I will be fines $100 US!!!
Triple exposure train tracks looked really good and the double exposure steps was very different and effective, I remember years ago using a plastic bodied TLR that sort of worked if all your stars lined up and luck was on your side, that funnily enough introduced me to the joy of square format, which I gather is also a favourite of yours Roger, I'm wondering if some enterprising company will introduce a new quality TLR, I think the market is there for such a camera.
I imagine it would be expensive Stephen or maybe a start up donation towards it where so many are made to test the water. Be good to see tough! Yeah I like 6x6
Just bought some of that new Kodak Gold 200 120 film to run through my MF cameras. Could use it in my Holgas. If I like it, I'll buy the 5 packs from then on. Grabbed some Foma 200 and 400 as well.

Hello! I’m still learning photography & trying to get a perfect exposure every single time is still a struggle. Do you have any tips on when to & when not to use flash on a Holga with 400 iso film? Should I follow a light meter app & do you have any recommendations? As for multiple exposures, I’ve read that the main thing that needs to happen is contrast. Do you alternate between the cloudy & sunny setting when doing multiple exposures to bring out the contrast? Thank you. Sorry to ask so many questions. I’m a photography student & I don’t feel like I’m getting the questions I need to have answered.

I'd love the Holga if it sold for $10 instead of 40+.. That is cheap folder or TLR money and those cameras usually got things like multiple shutter speeds and apertures, glass lenses or no blatant leaks. It's supposed to be fun, but wheres the fun in a $40 faulty piece of plastic,..I'm really surprised some Chinese company doesnt make a really cheap 120 camera.
They did, it was the Holga...they used to be like $2 back in the day, but when Lomography made them popular and Urban Outfitters started carrying them, the price went up and has stayed up now that the molds have been destroyed.

The lightest and no brainer camera to carry around. I won’t recommend it to beginners though. Might be a waste of hard earned money in my opinion. Yes it’s fun and good to dabble into. The triple exposure was nice I agree. I’d love to play around but with rising costs of everything from films to chemicals and paper, I’d rather focus on getting great pics and printing them 8x10. I think it depends on what the person wants to get out of film photography. If they want that "film experience," then a Holga and a word of caution would be fine. If they want reliable and quality shots, probably not. I think a better alternative is a vintage camera. They're usually just as cheap, more attractive, and usually simple manual controls to learn.

I can't remember now Bonnie! I usually shoot a Holga with HP5 on a sunny day with clouds. Not too bright. And set it to sunny (f11 I think that is)
