    Two screws in bottom for vertical support, only one screw needed in the top since the two bottom screws stop the pivot point.

    Question from a greenhorn.....why are the tops of the ballesteros slightly angles underneath the top flat railing board? That looks visually unappealing to me....shouldn't the top of the ballaster be cut 'square's and butted right up under the top railing board.....with just the bottom of the ballaster angle cut? Thanks for the explanation.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you need to double check sometimes you want the baluster centered and some times you want the gap centered depends on how it finished. you don't want a baluster on each end 1/2" from the post. Cheers!

    Hello Jeff,
    Quick question when you built your box and beam structure you cut off the 4x4 flush. So when you came back to put the hand rail posts how did you attach them to the surface of the deck? Did you go they the surface and attach to the rim joice and then to the other 4x4? Why dint you keep the posts solid all the way up and cut off at the top of the hand rail.
    Thanks
    Jeff

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this design there were so many elements that were developed as we went that I couldn't set the posts continuous to the handrail. what we did was attach to the rim joist and went to the ground and attached to the frame for the skirt board. this gives us an incredibly strong railing. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • @bernard8746
    @bernard8746 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love the videos! Just have a quick question, how much of a gap do you leave at the bottom? Are you afraid of the bottom of the skirt board rotting?

      I use blocks or cement. There are actually 3 great ways to do it depending on soil conditions and the type of weather you get. Let me know where you live and I can give you proper advice.

      Thanks Jeff, I live in the UK, in construction myself masonry side, just looking on youtube for good methods of fixing posts at ring beam level, (Simson strong tie sell bespoke fixings for decks to USA & CANADA) not UK. So Im looking for methods (strong and robust) that can take the pressure i.e. party time 34567 leaning on the handrail (can the post fixing take it). USA & CANADA seem to have tightened up on deck construction in this area, just looking for ideas Cheers Mark

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have found that the local building office usually has information regarding preferred techniques that also incorporate materials available and local climate conditions. A great place to start. Just remember when building out of wood, if you can have your posts in the ground tie them together under the deck with braces and have them come right through the deck to the top of your railing, This creates strength and sfety that cannot be rivaled by any surface railing system. Sorry I don't have a video on building a simple strong structure yet. You have inspired me to do one for next season. Thanks Mark and Cheers to the U.K.

    • @markbusby9709
      @markbusby9709 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your reply, my thoughts were too, to bring the posts through the deck floor with' below ring beam fixing to the posts , Also incorporating good ring beam fix also, As we do we will work it out. Cheers Mark

    When you do the skirting why can't you cantilever the structure a bit to overhang the block so that block isn't visible?

    • @hillaryclinton2415
      @hillaryclinton2415 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He told you.. railing safety.. with cantilever you can only do surface mount railings.

    Hi Jeff & Nate! I have looked at a lot of TH-cams, and your videos are FAB!
    I have watched your deck series about three times--and am ready to try my hand at creating a low floating (8x10) deck offset/below my existing deck to bridge to my concrete pool deck--currently I have 7 stairs, and want to have only 4 leading to the platform, with two more steps from it)...Your videos are SO SO helpful.
    My question that remains unanswered relates to the part of the LOW PLATFORM that sits on deck bloks and the concrete decking of your client's pool. This is precisely what I plan to do...though I might use box beams running from my 6x6 existing deck posts instead of dekbloks...I am not sure!
    Anyway, could you please explain what you did to set the rim joist on the pool deck side? I see you with some shim material in hand at one point, and when you are attaching the joist hangers, I see a shim, but is that all there is under that rim joist? Wouldn't shims deteriorate? Or if they are cedar they are ok? Thanks for any advice.
    I am in London ON and a single mum, and will be working on this 8x10 platform on my own--with only a skill saw and the help of my 8 year old daughter! I don't need permits because of the height, but it is still taking me some time to get my nerve up..! Your videos are inspiring! And Nate is a wonderful addition...I find his comments affirming...because he offers the perspective of a bit of a rookie...Thank you Jeff! I also watched your company vision, and would hire you in a flash. Great Great work.
    Holly

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Holly,The answer is yes. we use cedar shims and that is all you need to support the ridge beam on the pool deck surface.
      We also used joist hangers to span the gap from side to side. hope your project goes well. I am sure your little man will be a lot of help like my Nate was when he was young.

    Can someone please explain what he means by “burn the screw” at 8:02. Please explain both the technique he is using, and why it helps. From what I can tell, he is putting the screw in reverse, but pushing the drill in as to not let the screw back out, thus stripping the wood. It seems like that would help avoid the pilot hole to help the boards pull together, but the sawdust doesn’t get cleared, and it seems extremely hard to force the screw to stay in place. I tried and could only do it if I already had a pilot hole that was just a little bit too small. Am I missing something?

    • @cutthecurve5726
      @cutthecurve5726 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No he’s saying if you burn the screw,make it hot before going in the wood, it won’t split the wood. He didn’t explain the science behind why that is though

    • @Force2BRW
      @Force2BRW 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cutthecurve5726 unless you know the technique, it sounds like you’re just guessing that he means “make the screw hot”. But hot metal expands, and wood is not a good conductor of heat, so would be more or less neutral to the temperature of something. I’m more looking for someone to explain it that really knows exactly what he’s doing rather than another guess.

    • @chaetogaster
      @chaetogaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks like he is reversing the screw while putting pressure on it at the same time. Essentially this should act almost like a drill and cut/mash the grain of the wood. Then when he drills the screw in afterwords the grain isn't parted (think like an axe would do, basically the same thing here). This is why predrilling also works and why many building screws have cutting heads: you prevent the prying apart of the grain by a pointy object.

  • @MrMcwesbrook
    @MrMcwesbrook 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    can you explain "burning a screw"?

    • @PatrickBoatner
      @PatrickBoatner 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out his drywall videos. Basically after driving the screw a little ways in, stop and turn your drill to reverse. Squeeze the trigger and let it reverse, but keep pushing it in. Like, give it some real pressure. That causes a lot of friction and heats it up. That sears it, and stops it from splitting. As he says, you'll see a little smoke come out.
      Don't ask me how it works, ha. Seems to work well though.
