Dan Blocker had been in an accident with Pernell Roberts and their horses a few episodes earlier where he broke his collarbone, so the sling is for real.

While walking their horses down a path that became muddy (the article didn't say why), Pernell'a horse Scout slipped and collided with Hoss's horse Chub. Roberts and Blocker jumped off their horses with Roberts suffering a sprain (it didn't say where) and Blocker a broken collarbone. I know filming can be dangerous but Blocker suffered no permanent damage and neither horse was injured in any way.
