  • Bonanza - Episode 76 - The Horse Breaker - The Cartwrights hope that time and therapy will get bronc breaker, Johnny Lightly, back in the saddle after a bad fall. But Johnny soon faces thinly veiled hostility from the young nurse sent to help him, threats from a rancher who blames Ben Cartwright for his family's calamities, and a growing fear that he may never walk again.
    The Horse Breaker
    Director: Don McDougall
    Writer: Frank Chase
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 26 November 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
While working at the Ponderosa, wrangler Johnny Lightly (Ben Cooper) suffers an accident that costs him the use of both legs. Though Dr. Kay (Addison Richards theorizes that the injuries may not last, Johnny has given up the will to live. The only hope for Johnny's recovery rests in his growing affection for Dr. Kay's assistant Ann Davis (played by Sue Randall), formerly Miss Landers on Leave It to Beaver).
    Reviews:
"This Bonanza story has yong Ben Cooper who was breaking horses for he Ponderosa being thrown and sustaning spinal paralysis. The Cartwrights take him in until he can recover. A nurse fom Dr.Addison Richard goes akong to help with the exercise treatment.
The main part of the story is the relationship between nurse Sue Randall abd Cooper. Both are wounded in their different ways. There's a secondaryy plot involving neighbor R.G. rmsterong and Randall who was once involved with one of his sons now deceased. Armstrong figures she's part of the family even though Randall and his kid were never married. Amstrong also doesn't like the Cartwrights in any event on general principles.
Cooper and Randall have some good scenes together as the romance develops. Iy's an episode with a well told tale." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"The Cartwrights have hired a young man, Johnny Lightly, to break in a few horses. But while doing his job, Johnny is thrown and loses all feeling in the lower part of his body. With Johnny paralyzed, he will reside with the Cartwrights while he undergoes therapy in order to regain the use of his legs.
The doctor sends over a nurse, Ann Davis (Sue Randall), that has been obviously emotionally hurt by a man. Ann is a bitter young woman that cares for no one else but herself and will never again open up to a man. But while helping Johnny to regain feeling, Ann feels herself being draw toward the good-looking horse breaker and is set to leave Virginia City before she gets hurt again.
There is also a rather silly sub-plot, that involves a rancher, Nathan Clay, that blames Ben Cartwright for killing his son even though he was killed in another town while robbing a bank. And with the Cartwright boys on a cattle drive, Nathan is finally going to get his revenge on Ben.
The story concerning the paralyzed horse breaker was actually very interesting. The relationship between him and the bitter nurse played well. The part of the story that involved getting revenge on Ben Cartwright ended in a silly manner that was just not believable. But overall this episode held the viewers interest throughout the show. Good watch." Written by kfo9494 on IMDb.com

A very beautiful story. If I could only bring those days back. I was 11 years old in the Philippines when they showed Bonanza on our black and white TV set. I was not allowed to watch when my mom found out I was so in love with Michael Landon. She said it will spoil my studies. I am now 71 years old and I am so grateful I could now watch all the series. Thank you so much for showing these. Might not have long to go but enjoying life watching . Thank you very much.

Lol 68 here, do you remember the actor who was a fugitive on the run falsely accused of killing his wife? A friend and I would skip school just to stay home and watch him.

I am 75 years old and began watching them in the United States when I was about the same age as you were. I still enjoy watching them again every few years. I wasn’t in love with any of the four main iCartwrights, but I liked all the characters. The two I was in love with were Candy (David Canary) and Will Cartwright. Candy, because he was so handsome and personable; Will, because he was played by Guy Williams, with whom I fell in love as a little girl when he played Zorro. I watch reruns of Zorro, which was terribly written and directed, because I love seeing Guy Williams. I wish he had lived longer- 65 was way too young to die.

I’ve watched Bonanza episodes several times over the decades, and I have a question that I have never been able to answer. Did the Cartwrights have an outhouse or perhaps a bathroom inside the house? We know they had running water in the kitchen, but all the bedrooms had a pitcher and basin. This question came up again because of this episode. I wondered how Johnny went to the bathroom! 🥴

@@BelaCurcio Yeah, I knew that the real Virginia City had water pipes running to the homes of residents by 1861, and by 1862 they had gas lines also. However, the Ponderosa would’ve been too far out to benefit from those city services. We know they had a well, and it magically appeared in the front yard from time to time, and disappeared just as easily.
In the episode in which the Cartwrights help the flatlanders drill water wells using a windmill, they use the pipe that Ben had bought to run water to his house. They already had a water pump at the kitchen sink. And Ben had bought a lot of pipe, so he must’ve been planning to run water to the upstairs. Flush toilets were readily available to those who could afford them by this time in history. So I was just wondering if I had missed anything reference to indoor plumbing in any of the Bonanza episodes. With all the fancy female guests they hosted, Ben certainly should’ve had it installed!

by the way, a horrible way to treat horses. Could only be done because ranchers in those days had plenty of disposable mounts running free on their territories. I bet ground was plastered with carcasses with broken bones and "dead broken" is a technical term of the horse world reminding of that. I had 26 years with a wonderful horse that was not "dead broken" but still the best companion.
Monty Roberts and other folks started to end the crap. Saw it 30 years ago still going on on the race tracks here in Germany and I do not know whether it has ended yet. Whats the gain of "breaking a horse in 5 minutes" when you have the advantage of trust and reliability for 20 years after putting in some time in the starting process?

40:17 Impressive toss! I think that was actually Lorne Greene rather than his stunt double Ed Jurengi. Freezing and stepping through it sure looks like Ben's face and no cut before the toss. But 41:43 Come on Ben, both his hands are full, you can take him! But I know that Ben's not going to be the hero of this episode. I was waiting to see if the desk gun was for suicide or killing this guy but it's both. :D 42:00 Huh, why isn't Johnny crawling to the desk? Waiting for a sudden "I can stand up" moment? :( Ok, that was alright but 43:30 Anne, grab the rifle! You're not a weak girl, you would have figured that out. Oh my, tell them to put away their guns before you open the door or they could have shot Ben on first sight. They played the sons very weak in a couple places. It wasn't congruent with their boisterous bullying. I dunno ""You walked" was a bit much. "You're standing" would have been a lot more appropriate. And they could do more than standing there looking there stunned. Would be natural if the nurse exclaimed her excitement and said "can you step towards me" Ben says "don't push it", then Johnny says "I can do it" and takes a step into her arms. What do you think? how would you have written the ending?

No. This episode was great until it turned into a silly fantasy about Johnny's sudden TOTAL recovery with no residual impairment. That's a major disservice to the reality for actual paralyzed patients. It was great when it gave some genuine perspective to the early understanding of rehab 150 years ago. The need to wrap it up quickly left them with a shaky ending.

3:00 Interesting, in another episode they said "don't move him" when Adam fell off the roof that he was building for his bride. Season 5, Ep. 33 The Triangle (May 1964), 3 years after this one S3.Ep10 (Nov 1961) with only 1 of 3 writers changing. When I watched The Triangle, I was surprised that they said "don't move him." I wondered if that was accurate for 1860. (Of course the show is not focused on historical accuracy, but sometimes interesting to know what is accurate and what is not.)
