My great grandfather was a member of parliament during federation. My grandmother’s father, Henry Foster MLA, Minister of Mines. Born in Whiltshire England, emigrated freely with parents. lived in Victoria. He was Minister of Mines when the Welcome Stranger Nugget was discovered, thus his name on the monument. We have a copy his opening speech, it’s longggg lol. Member of Victorian Parliament between 1889 and 1902. Died: 25 May 1902 (Clifton Hill, Victoria)
Good you correctly made the point that Aboriginal people could vote before the 1967 referendum, which was just about extending the federal race power to aboriginal people.
Great video! I loved the light humour you threw in, I loved the nuances and smaller details, and I 10/10 would have loved to watch this video in civics or humanities class in high school

(and podcast), would love for you to go in depth into the writing process of the constitution. specifically how they selected the bicameral model, influence of Westminister and American political systems (and any others, I know Switzerland was mentioned in passing at one point) and any ideas that were left on the drawing board and feel free to make it into a musical, Hamilton style. might be your ticket into fame and wealth :)

Very informative and wonderfully presented, the interesting take is that we've now got three levels of taxation, the local government tax, state tax and the federal tax, also it would have been interesting to challenge the State government border closures during covid in the high court.., interesting..
The border closures were challenged in the High Court. Palmer v Western Australia (which you can read details of here: www8.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/cth/HCA/2021/5.html or a shorter analysis here: www5.austlii.edu.au/au/journals/SydLawRw/2022/13.html) found that the border closures did not contradict section 92 of the constitution. Clive Palmer argued they did, but the High Court ruled that border closures were permissible because it was within reason of the limits of the constitution and the restrictions are both temporary and justified to protect human life. So had the government done it without there being a state of emergency, the ruling could've been different as the High Court may have found that to be unjustified and beyond the limitations of how section 92 applies. Part of the reasoning involved citing comments from Edmund Barton during the constitutional convention debates about how states should still retain the power to prevent the introduction of disease into their borders. I agree, it is interesting. It was fascinating to learn how complicated constitutional interpretation can be when that case arose.
Any chance of explaining the federal corporate tax system and the importance expanding the corporate progressive tax system before the next economic depression?
