Mark my words - Byzantine is going to become oppressively strong once people realize just how optimized their synergies are. Their Cistern’s give a scaling villager gathering speed bonus, production speed bonus, AND research speed bonus. The influence zone is larger than a Auchen Chapel and they get the first 3 of them **for free** by the time they age up to Feudal. That’s 18% gathering, 60% production, and 90% research free of charge spread out over 3 **free** Auchen Chapel sized zones. They have cheaper farms that produce 20% more resources at a 20% faster rate, with the transition aided by the fact that they only have to spend half the wood on military production buildings due to their buffed production speed. Their mercenary house is a miniature Farimba garrison which uses a secondary resource, freeing up their primary resources for aging up or just spamming more units. They cow boom harder than the Malian’s without the 3000+ resource commitment and once people realize that we’re going to see just how nutty Byzantine’s truly are.
At the lower levels players aren't good at defence so if you play a civ that is good at early aggression on this map it's relatively easy to overwhelm your opponent. I think that's one reason why some people dislike this map.

I like Cliffside, but mostly in terms of bombarding people with ranged siege from behind a giant "Hadrian's Wall" built up across the center.
Yeah it has a choke point very close to the player’s base
