He's probably better suited to working with something like Cubase. It all depends on how you approach music making. Usually people either love or hate FL. It mostly gets a bad wrap because there are too many kiddies downloading the wares and whacking something together in 10 minutes using the base samples and some half-assed riff using Sytrus. However if you put more time and effort into it, you can get amazing results. Sasha and Deadmau5 use it.

Yeah most samples are pretty lame. I use CM samples but always promise myself to tweak them in some way. As far as synths go, NI all the way.
