Panasonic KX-TG1031S Display Failure | Screens Blank or Displaying Random Characters and Icons

  • 2 handsets out of the 6 in this Panasonic KX-TG1031S cordless phone system have developed display issues. The one in the bedroom first went blank, then upon setting it into the cradle, random characters started displaying on the screen. Reseating the battery left no display at all.
Later that evening, I discovered the unit in the living room had a very dim display with a few additional icons displayed on the bottom of the screen that shouldn't be there. The display seemed to fade and return a couple times over the few minutes I was testing it. I removed and reseated the batteries and got a fully working display again.
As of this morning, the living room unit's display is showing all the normal characters, but the display is very light. Adjusting the contrast settings had no effect whatsoever, neither did reseating the batteries. Both units still otherwise function properly, it seems to be an issue with the display itself only.
I have received a good number of comments over the years regarding the displays in Panasonic phones behaving this way. Most commonly, it seems to be within the 5.8 GHz era models. I too have encountered this on a handful of sets. This is the first time I've heard of it happening on this particular model.
As of now, I really don't know what it is that causes this. I am convinced it's a software issue if it changes upon rebooting the handset, as well as if random characters are displayed. I would expect dead pixels or consistently no display whatsoever if it were some kind of physical issue.
Even though these symptoms do not point to a physical issue in my mind, I cannot 100% rule it out. The only thing I can think of is that the units are being effected by humidity levels, as it has been quite humid since I put the units out and they were previously stored in a dry basement prior. I have taken the living room handset with the dim display and moved it downstairs. It is about 70% humidity in the living room and about 45% downstairs. I will leave it there for a few days to see if anything changes. I will update with another video if it changes.

Not good! Panasonic really seemed to struggle to make their phones as good as Uniden. At least they lasted as long as they have.
In my experience, Panasonic handsets from the late 900MHz era (around 2001) to, apparently, the early DECT 6 era (although I was under the impression it only extended to middle of the 5.8 era) are vulnerable to the display problem. Symptom include: the screen blanking out and coming back at random, the screen displaying random characters, and the screen displaying lines and/or all the pixels during the time it’s switching between cutting in and out. It’s honestly hard to describe, but I hope this made sense.

Would you say Vtech and AT&T are junk?

@@Johnsolerokar From the early-mid 2000s (and in the case of VTech, going back to the 1990s), they certainly don't hold up as well over time as Uniden, but today, they are the best you can get. They have always been decent or better for design, but it took them until the late 2000s to get their build/material quality right. Although vintage AT&T equipment tends to be really good.

Perhaps find another one at goodwill, maybe swap the screen from another device

It could be the surface mount capacitors leaking or some other component like the ribbon cable you mentioned or the connector it is plugged into.

Sounds like it may be humidity related maybe you could take it apart and put it in a container with silica gel beads and see if it would pull out any moisture

Take the battery out for a few hours then put it back in. That will sometimes make the display work again. However, it will reset the battery indicator to low, so I recommend then running down the battery instead of putting it on charge, because charging a charged battery when the handset thinks it’s low may cause it to spoil/overcharge.

I left the batteries out of this one overnight, but still no display. I have not seen any consistency with these display failures, in regards to the failure or repair. Sometimes it comes back with as little explanation as it goes.
