I'm Mexican, so it's impossible for me to let #4 go, hand embroidered blouses and dresses with square and round necklines are part of our traditional clothing. In fact, I just came back from a holiday and I bought myself a bunch of different blouses and dresses (huipiles). They do make me look older, but they are the perfect clothing for the spring, summer (even autumn) heat. Sorry Marie Anne, I can't follow your advice this time! Lol
@matronarules - I’m completely pro-embroidery, but she’s referring specifically to the square necklines. I’ll continue to sport embellished garments, but the square neckline with embroidery is what is moving out of the fashion cycle. Traditional clothing is always the exception, because it’s linked to a culture, I don’t think she’s referring to that. 😊
I was thinking the same even though I'm not Mexican. I love peasant blouses with embroidery. I think they are a boho classic. And square neck lines look great on some people. Depends on body type
I have always hated the distressed (ripped) jeans! They look like what I wore as a teen when helping my dad with the yard work and that was the only time I wore them! I went shopping for jeans today as I’ve love about 30 pounds or so. Didn’t buy a thing! Couldn’t find any for us on the short end of the stick (I’m 5ft1/2”) - couldn’t find anything that didn’t look like it has been worn and torn! Couldn’t find anything for a slightly mature 75+ year old body! Won’t go to a mall as I prefer nit being shot!!!!! And I refuse to wear what some people call “old lady” clothes! I’ve worn jeans for around 60 years and will keep wearing them as I like to? All I saw weee clothing suited for someone about 50 years or so younger than or more than 6 inches taller than me! Pretty darn disgusted!!!!!
@@sandybruce9092 Loft, Ann Taylor, and White House Black Market make great jeans that are not distressed and ripped. They're affordable and very flattering! All these brands make jeans and pants in regular, curvy-fit, and petite sizes to fit a wide range of body shapes.
Totally agree.I could never understand these ripped ,bleached etc jeans .Proud to say I have never owned a pair of jeans .I hated them .They should be used for the purpose they were designed ,manual labour ! 7:51

@@maryellenrioux2494 In South, Central and part of North America we suffered from spanish colonisation, so that's why many variants of european blouses are now adapted to our traditional clothes. That doesn't mean that here we haven't enchiched the variety of these pieces and their designs with our own iconography and styles, not to talk about of other native morphologies that didn't suffer much changes through colonisation... I have to point that there are other morphologies present in several garments in LATAM that have similarities with other clothes from the world.... so, no surprise with that. Please, tell me where do you find those claims of people saying what you have commented, because I can't relate them with some specialized information. Thanks.
I like the square embroidered neckline. I have one top like that and it makes me happy because the bright colors and also because I associate it with summer vacation.
In defense of my hoodie---well, I can't defend how it looks. But nothing beats it for the chilly pre-dawn dog walk, yard work in early spring or late autumn or adding a warm layer under a coat when the weather is brutally cold. Sometimes, fashion just has to take the back seat to comfort and praticality! I enjoy your videos!
Hi Marie Anne. I think short shorts look pretty unflattering on the whole and worse still, in my opinion, are cycling shorts.I much prefer a lovely pair of tailored Bermuda shorts. I agree totally with leggings and ripped jeans going out of fashion- I’m not a fan of any clothing that accentuates any unwanted bumps and lumps !
100% agreement, especially the cycling shorts. I am an avid cyclist, the bike saddle is the problem if one needs cycling shorts. Plus all that polyester promotes yeast and UTI infections. Those people all decked out in spandex are usually a$$h@£es
Crew necks remind me of men's hanes t-shirts, and I avoid as much as possible. Unflattering as well. I do find square necklines flattering tho. Another case of wear what you like. 🙂
Hi Marieanne. I love this video. Just returned from 2 weeks in beautiful France. Our trip included 5 days in Paris. It was so easy to spot French women in both Paris and smaller towns. Lots of trench coats, scarves, simple but elegant clothes. Unfussy hair and minimal, yet flattering, makeup. And most, especially in Paris, wearing comfortable walking shoes. I love your channel.
Ha... I love French style principles, but it's definitely not the case all over France. Some people wear bad sportswear like they do anywhere else... and that's absolutely fine! Not everyone has the money/time to think of all this.
For over 10 years I have worn leggings as they were meant to be worn-long tops or short dresses with boots or ballet flats. They will always work for me, even at my current age of 67. It is my go-to style in every season except summer. Happily, I don’t wear anything else on your list, as I am by nature not a trendy person.😊
Agree, but I always see so many people who should not be wearing them, and I believe that is who she is speaking to. People who wear them like pants and who don’t seem to realize they are only flattering if you are fairly slim in the legs.
I hope leggings stay around for a log time! They allow me to move without restriction, and don’t feel bulky…..which is why they are more preferable than jeans. Yes, they should be worn with a long top for coverage for most of us, but for those with beautiful, slim,fit figures, no tunic needed!
Oh my goodness, the “crop shrug cardigan”! I remember over 30 years ago an elderly aunt was knitting those for everyone, but NOT to wear as fashion. She made them to wear as either bed-jackets or for an extra layer of warmth on cold winter evenings spent reading or watching TV. She called them “Arms”, and mine was much appreciated during winter evenings in Minnesota.
Besides wearing a shrug in bed, I do prefer wearing one for just a bit of warmth on the shoulders in lieu of a shawl in the spring or fall when an evening event may be quite warm at the start, but then cool off rather quickly as night approaches. Shrugs can look more elegant depending on whether they are knitted from a finer or lace weight yarn or made from a light knit fabric.
@@ruthtorphy2204 I'm glad to find other people that wear shrugs to bed- it's only my arms that get cold. As for leggings, I bought several ugly pair to bake and cook in, as when they get covered in flour and messed up, it doesn't matter; they were ugly to begin with.
Marie-Anne you are so wise and I often hear your voice in my head when I am shopping or looking at outfits on the internet - especially: "if it's not a wow, it's a non!" (this has saved me so much money and closet space). Today I can add to that superb advice: "Good style is always in, but fashion comes and goes." Thank you - that's so true and gives us the freedom to say "Non" to unappealing/unflattering trends. Meanwhile I *wish* that leggings were out of fashion where I live. Today at the mall I estimate that 70% of women were in leggings-as-trousers. sigh. Oh well, to each their own I suppose.
Here in Australia, we call flip flops; thongs. And they will never go out of fashion because of the hot weather, and beachy lifestyle. Also, I have a couple of embroidered square neck line tops from which I’ve received many compliments. It shows off my Eastern European roots, looks folky and endearing. It also makes me look approachable, warm and friendly, which I am. I won’t be discarding them any time soon.
Agree. I'm in Florida and flip flops will always be a thing here. They are classic and the thong sandals with a back-strap are also classic (Key West sandals). The push for women to replace their sandals with slip on shoes made like house shoes is annoying. They don't stay snug on my feet and are uncomfortable to wear.

I agree with everything you said Marianne. I only wear classic clothes. I don’t even wear jeans, only tailored trousers. I lived in jeans for 3 years at university, and have never worn them since,38 years and counting!,I also dislike baseball hats, racer back vest tops, tiered dresses, over the knee boots, very chunky shoes with platforms. I don’t follow trends, but wear the trends that I like, for example I love the wide elegant trousers that are in fashion at the moment. I so enjoy your channel.

Hoodies are one of my favorite choices when I go to walk (30+ miles a week) -- and run errands along the way. They keep my neck warm when it is cold. For summer, I have ones made of sunblocking material so my neck doesnt get sunburned. Stick a ball cap on to keep it back from my face, pop on a seasonal weight hoodie, and get some miles in. :-) I have also lived in apartments that were so cold that hoodies were the only way to get warm enough to sleep. Hoodies are so practical.
Always good advice . Just spring cleaned my closet.. a large bag of clothing gone to donation based on all your excellent videos this past yesterday . Leaving shortly on a 40 day trip ,Turkey, Greece and Italy flying from Vancouver . Feeling very confident about what I’m packing to take . You have been very inspirational to me. I was always anti-Crocs until I found that their line of slip resistant flats are exactly what I need working in the restaurant. They are waterproof and if they do get wet, they dry out with a quick wipe of a towel. Here in rainy South Florida, that is a must. But I only wear them to work and nowhere else!
I agree. I've been wearing a maryjane style of Crocs for several summers here in the Midwest. (Also, I'm surprised you'd impune a brand.) And, Marie-Anne, the shoes your video showed as an alternative were ridiculous.

Even when hoodies are worn "down", I like the drape of the fabric around my neck. I like the look and I like how it helps keep my neck warm. When it is cark and cold and dreary out and I wear my hoodie (only have one), I pretend to be a medieval monk, lol.
I agree on every point, and my worst fashion pet peeves are distressed jeans and flip flops. Maybe it’s because I’m 62, not 18, but I prefer to look more dressy (and dignified, lol).

We are not in the day and age where we tell older women what they “should” wear. They should wear what makes them feel like themselves. “ older” women grew up in the 80’s and you’re not going to make them feel invisible or tell them how to dress. We love color and sexy and things that we can be expressive with. It’s a new dawn and I love it!

My goodness they are out of control and worn so inappropriately-good riddance but I’m in Australia - I don’t think the message has reached some of the girls and women who should never wear them as stand alone pants-perhaps a megaphone throughout the main city streets 😂!!!

Here in Hawaii, we live in flip-flops, many are well-made, comfortable and stylish for going about town, not the cheap plastic ones. What I call flip-flops can be classified as sandals by some. I’ve heard you complain about leggings before, but I’ve held on to a few pairs-and today you said that the way I’ve been wearing them is just right! Footless tights! I wear them under skirts. Much better than tights with feet because I get 2-3 wearings between washes-which I would never do with socks or hosiery with feet. Thanks for this and all your guidance.

@@jaylynn7493 - I agree! Living in cold Michigan, I actually wear my cotton leggings (with only minimal spandex) all winter UNDER jeans and other pants! So cozy, even around the house, which I keep fairly cool due to high heating costs! For me they will always be a layering stable during those long winters!☺️
While I try to maintain my French-chic while living in Southern California, I own two item classes that practically every Southern Californian owns: hoodies, and embroidered peasant tops. I have to fit in !!
I wear various shades of jeans, and I particularly love faded jeans. I love pale blue denim. I have since I was a child and always will. I also love square necked blouses with or without embroidery. The square neckline is so flattering.
It's a good list. I don't think hoodies are associated with teen boys here, but they're comfort wear rather than fashion wear. Perfect for an autumn hike or a visit to the pumkin patch. I'm glad that the leggings are going out of style as bottoms. I know people that wear them because it's easier than getting trousers that fit properly, unfortunately.
Unfortunately, for me, trousers and jeans are a very huge problem because I have sideways scoliosis with one higher hip and very skinny legs, so I am quite the exception, and have to wear leggings with flaref tunic tops or nice long shirts, and I opt for scarves also. To cover up my crooked hips and back.😢
I'm never going to let go of leggings. I don't wear them for every function, but they are always comfortable and forgiving and I love them for it. I also love crocs and flip flops. Like Rick Astley said "Never gonna give you up." No one is going to give up hoodies either. Sorry it seems you don't like American casual style, but these aren't going anywhere. They are standard. Frankly, I think my style is elegant, but I have always been and always will be BOHO. Its just more sophisticated now that I'm 49. I think style is more than an expression of right vs wrong. It is an expression of who I am.

As another Oregonian for Hoodies, please let me add this. Quality hoodies cost less than quality sweaters. The cost of cleaning is less. They last longer. They go Indoors/Outdoors seamlessly. The fit is generally more forgiving of bodies with lumps, rolls etc. They work with a wide variety of movements. Finally, Ive never seen a hoodie pill.!
Love the dark green trousers! Maybe my suggestion has been covered in other videos, I HATE the "cold shoulder" look. I still see it on people and in a few catalogs. I bought ONE dress with cold shoulders about four years ago. I still love the dress but I put a cardigan over it!
I would never discourage anyone from wearing what they love but I agree with all of your choices. And Im glad to say I am relieved someone is finally saying it. I appreciate well made clothes with classic lines that are specifically made to make the wearer look good. Alot of these clothes anger me because they are not designed to compliment the average person. They are made and designed by people who know how easily it is to talk people into wearing certain clothes.(ethnic clothes excluded) through market hype and models who dont even smile as they wear them on the runway or in magazines. Using body language that seems to say like they are above it all. "In the know" and unattainable. It makes them and the clothes they wear desirable. Its phoney. So the hardworking average person puts their trust in someone else to tell them what is "in" and socially acceptable instead of keeping to their own individual style and simply looking great in something that suits them and their bodies. There is no one more beautiful than someone who knows they look great.
Delighted to see all of these items going out of fashion. I must say, I do find myself moving back to a more classic look. Definitely stands the test of time, especially during these inflationary times. Thank you for your video!

Marie-Anne, thank you for mentioning the environmental impact of the bleached jeans. I will be happy to see them go, along with distressed denim. I have heard that the industrial process used to create highly distressed denim garments causes unsafe workplace conditions; for that reason I have avoided those garments. Being a native of Sweden residing in the USA we - I m not bragging - definitely have a built in sense of style. I’ve never worn distressed jeans or cropped sweaters. Black and white, jeans, layers, scarves…….yes indeed never goes out of style
I’ll never give up bleached jeans, flip flops, or leggings. Your other suggestions are right on. I would add colored hair, huge cheap jewelry, fluorescent colors, fake nails, over embellished buckles on shoes, and fake eye lashes.
Marie-Anne, you really made me laugh about the leggings. I live in a state where most people dress like beach bums and fitness extremists and I said to myself just the other day that Camel Toe season is upon us once again.
I know that they do not look good on me, but though I have bigger thighs and bottom (which is why they don't look good and I know it) but I moved to them with tunic tops in 2019 (and loved them in the COVID isolation) since with a smaller waist I could not find pant/trousers/slacks that would fit. To get my butt and thighs into anything meant that the waist was far too big, and I could not find anything even to alter. BTW You do have lovely shoes, but people with what has been called wide peasant feet, especially with any "deformities" (bunions, arthritic toe joints) pointed toe boxes, and dainty shoes do not fit the foot - much like Cinderella's ugly step sisters trying to put on the glass slipper.

Excellent advice! I’ve always stuck to good quality, classic pieces and used accessories to keep in trend. It saves a lot of money as well. I do disagree with the leggings however. I think it depends on the person wearing them and I agree that they should never be worn as trousers. I have long, thin legs and always wear leggings with a tunic or long blazer or sweater/ cardigan and flats. There are other styles I would love to wear but just do not look good on me. You have to know what looks good on you. Also, I only wear good quality, heavier fabric leggings, which makes a huge difference. Leggings will show your flaws, not hide them.
I like a shrug over a skimpy tank or slip dress. Adds a bit of warmth and looks less bare. But not a bulkier sweater type, but a finer knit or lacey top that doesn't visually compete. I don't like wearing a wrap because I'm always fussing with it, it falls down, comes unwrapped, etc.
I agree with everything Marie-Anne denounces! Especially camouflage !! Eeeejous!! (I will make one exception though for faded jeans. If I buy them second hand then they' are not as environmentaly unsound,,,,,). Bravo Marie-Anne!!

I’m 67 and I wear classic jeans as well as ripped jeans. I love dressing the loose ripped jeans with heels and a cute top! Just depends on the occasion! :)
I am petite/ curvy, and find the cropped cardigan to be a godsend for flattering my height/build and making me look 'put together' during cooler months. As for leggings.....agree 100% that 99% of them are not worn properly, outside the gym, post leisurewear trend. I have two luxe brand/quality pair, one black, the other brown, which look like leather. Have found these to be incredibly versatile during the winter months as uber chic layering pieces with oversized or long sweaters....and never fail to garner MANY compliments whenever I wear them---casually with flat-heeled boots, or even with classic high pumps...I always feel chic, comfortable and (quietly) proud that I maintain a fitness regime whenever I put them on, since their cut flatters my waist, legs and bum. As for denim....TOTALLY agree how dark wash will forever remain the more elevated choice, for reasons which are obvious.... but still find the light wash version remains the most versatile during those sun-soaked SUMMER MONTHS. For me, the 'bane' of my fashion preference has ALWAYS been RIPPED JEANS. DESPISE THEM; always have, always will. Thankfully, they're more available sans rips these days, but not so long ago, they were a needle in the haystack!! Ripped jeans annoy me more than anything! LOL
@@shinnam Learned long ago which styles/cuts, colors, textures, etc. work best for my height and build--and stick with them...trends may come and go; but ones body type will always be the same...lol.... Am blessed with a tiny waist; helps to offset my round hips and short legs, so any style/cut which accentuates the waist OR extends all the way to ankle length especially for outerwear and heavier fabrics during winter.. will render the most flattering silhouette for me . That's just the way it is. lol
I agree with everything, except hoodies. Around here (Western Cananda) you need them. It's finally warming up a little for Spring, but the wind is still icy. I often wear a hoodie when walking my dogs on the off leash trails. Beautiful there, but open fields. My ears would freeze of otherwise. Walking on the beach at this time of the year needs a hoodie too. I dislike to wear beenies or toques. When it gets really cold I use my Alpaca scarf.
Great advice, Marie-Anne. Destresed jeans are mind-boggling for me. I see them mostly on young people but when I do see them on older women, I feel they are trying too hard to look young. Not very classy at all.
I agree with you 100% on style and especially glad to say goodbye to the distressed and faded look. I still love my hoodies though. They are too comfortable to part with. I have used the hood on rare occasion when I had to go outside in extreme cold wind. I also like to wear them around the house when my arms get cold, rather than put on a nice sweater. The hoodie can handle the frequent washes. TFS
The only item featured that I do have, and I must confess I will be keeping, is my hoodie! I only have one and I don’t wear it outside other than in my backyard or cottage. There’s nothing better for those chilly Canadian cottage evenings. 😊
@@maryellenrioux2494 Yes, actually I do! That’s one of the reasons why I bought it last year. I have short hair and love the feeling of the soft inside of the hood against my head and neck. I love curling up in a big easy chair with my hood up and my hands, always cold, tucked inside the front pocket. Of course there are other things that can be worn to give a similar effect but why get rid of a perfectly useful article of clothing? It’s a gorgeous soft earthy green colour and really flattering for my skin tone and green eyes. I also bought it on a trip with one of my sons so there’s a lot of sentimental connection as well. To each their own I guess.

I myself am classic, but must say I was surprised to see no Birkies on the list! Years ago, one of my teachers told us our jeans with patches and holes were a mockery of the poor. Thank you, Marie-Anne. I've never actually worn most of those trends, so don't mind that they are going out of fashion. Leggings have a place as underwear in cold weather, or perhaps in the gym, but not in place of trousers. I once had the misfortune to be on an escalator behind (and below) a woman wearing leggings which, she presumably had not realised, were see-through. I quickly discovered what underwear she had on (actually so tiny as to seem she was naked!), and spent the rest of the escalator trip trying desperately to look elsewhere - but it was almost hypnotic!

I am surprised you had the embroidered square neckline in there, as I thought that had been relegated to various ethnic costumes long ago. However, the leggings will be awful hard to get rid of. During lockdown, I wondered if I'd ever wear pants with a zipper again..I am skinny again at 73, but my shape is definitely different than the last time I weighed 120! Leggings and jeggings are just so much easier to wear than many items constructed for young folks. I wear jeggjngs that I buy a bit larger than I need, and my black and dark denim ones really look like pants. But, I could be fooling myself, too!
I like black leggings with different styles of tunics. Next winter I will be looking for a pair of brown velvet leggings and a few oversized cashmere sweaters.
I am pretty much like you, I can’t ditch the leggings because I cannot find jeans or pants that fit my hips and waist which are also crooked from scoliosis and that aren’t too wide for my skinny legs. I’m 71 so my shape is definitely different than when I was young I wear long loose tops tunics, shirts to disguise the spine and hips and to cover the leggings. Of course people like me are a special case.

Whew! Finally! Glad to see the end of all these things. I was starting to believe people forgot how to dress. I was always puzzled as to why anyone would wear flip flops instead of a sturdier sandal and crocs should be worn in the garden. Personally, khaki green has always been one of my favorites. Bonsoir Marie-Anne, I heartily agree with all of these fashion trends to ditch. There are so many other options for comfortable, chic clothing. Hoodies are worn here by so many teenagers. I think sometimes that teenagers hide in their hoodies, shading their faces, and it was worse when they had to wear masks at school, too. The world can be a frightening place for some teens, but hiding doesn't help. Mature women wearing hoodies are seen in too many places here on the west coast, rather than carrying an umbrella or wearing something more stylish with a hood. I could never see what anyone saw in crocs - they make the wearer look like Donald Duck! Merci for your great advice, have a great weekend.

I definitely agree with these and I wish I could get away from leggings, but as an amputee I don’t have many options bc most jeans or trousers don’t have enough stretch. I am starting to incorporate wide leg trousers 😊
I generally agree with everything on this list. I do have some flip flops ( for beach wear ONLY) and hoodies (on a chilly day when I’m working in my garden or cleaning the patio, etc.; they can get a bit of dirt on them and are easily washed). They are appropriate for those situations. And although khaki can look very sophisticated, with my skin tones I would never wear it or any shade of green with a brown undertone, as I’d look like something that’s been left in the fridge too long haha!
I agree with you about khaki! I was analyzed (seasonal color analysis) as a winter, so anything warm-toned is wrong for my skin's cool undertones; khaki is an autumn color!
I sold my cropped cardigans and camo shirts last year at a garage sale and have been swapping out my hoodies for cowl necks. Thank you for letting me know I'm on the right track.
Believe this would depend on where you live and your lifestyle. For trendy cities, yes. If you live in the heat of Florida we are not giving up our flip-flops. They are just well-made and stylish (not the plastic ones shown). Leggings will never go out of style for the fitness crowd. But love your videos!!!
I have just purchased a pair of fairly light coloured jeans. I always tend to go for the darkwash but these suited me and my small frame. I never liked frayed or distressed jeans.
Also recently bought light colored ( Nine West straight leg / classic ) jeans for Summer - wear w/ casual tops & sneakers when darker jeans aren't suited for our hot midwest US days .
I see lots of ripped jeans and light jeans all over the US. I am not a fan of either. I can't ever imagine flip flops going out of style in the US. I love mine but usually only wear them around the house. I love the stripes you are wearing!
I love hoodies, always have, always will. Maybe it’s because most of my life I’ve sported really short hair like a pixie or a short bob. I think the hood balances the short hair well in terms of silhouette, but clashes with longer hair unless it’s put up in a high ponytail. The hood also gives off this “I’m protected, I am secure” vibe.
I totally agree, and I do my hair in a bun when wearing hoodies, I always wear my hair in buns BTW, since I find an adult woman - old woman to be honest - should not leave the house "en cheveux" ; this is a very old fashioned french opinion but I stick to it.
I feel the hoodie is cozier around the neck in cool weather as opposed to say, a crewneck sweater. Still, I don't wear one outside the home, a windy beach, or running to the grocery store. My hair would always be up too!
Such a fun video! I think we could add baseball caps (outside of the ballpark) to this list. I live by Portland ,Oregon so let me tell you about our hoodie culture: Here in the Pacific Northwest our teenagers live in hoodies bc they fit our nearly constant drizzle and overcast skies. The hoods are just right for pulling up over your head at the bus stop or when you don't want to be noticed walking down the hallway. They're such a part of our culture here that schools even have rules against wearing the hoods up in class. See, in our part of the world it doesn't rain as often as it sprinkles, so no one would DREAM of using an umbrella (how embarrassing!) and hoodies fill the niche. The odd thing is that our stores really don't sell many real raincoats. They sell nylon windbreakers and puffy jackets for hiking but very few nice trench coats. I found a good full length raincoat from Stutterheim online. People always ask where I got it! haha
lol, so true. I'm up north in Vancouver and a "true" Vancouverite proudly strides down the sidewalk with umbrella tightly closed in hand unless it's really bucketing down. Who wants to deal with a wet umbrella if they don't have to? 😂😂 Meanwhile, trenchcoats are rare as hens' teeth here too - I got mine from Simon's which is a retailer which originated in Quebec. Like you, everyone wants to know where I got it!

The falling off jeans have been out of style for over a decade. I can't get my grown boys to wear jeans that fit. They have never felt their "boys" restrained without having to wear an athletic cup.
I thought it had finally gone out of fashion and then spotted a young man who would barely be able to run if he had to the jeans were falling off so badly. UHG what a dreadful look.
I do have a beautiful hand knit shrug that my daughter made. I use it as I would use a shawl. It stays on if I move around as when holding babies, or dining. But I don’t wear it as part of an outfit. It’s for going into places I know will be cold. ❄️ Especially in summer here in the midwestern USA, people keep their air conditioners running at temperatures reminiscent of a refrigerator. I’ll be wearing lightweight summer clothing and walk into a restaurant and feel like I need my winter parka. We usually opt for outdoor seating.

Hello Marie-Anne. Thank you for this! I never wore any of these because I never found any to be fashionable. I’m a bigger lady, also very tall, and I also find that clothing retailers offer us very ugly clothing, full of all of these terrible styles.
I'm Mexican, so it's impossible for me to let #4 go, hand embroidered blouses and dresses with square and round necklines are part of our traditional clothing. In fact, I just came back from a holiday and I bought myself a bunch of different blouses and dresses (huipiles). They do make me look older, but they are the perfect clothing for the spring, summer (even autumn) heat. Sorry Marie Anne, I can't follow your advice this time! Lol
@matronarules - I’m completely pro-embroidery, but she’s referring specifically to the square necklines. I’ll continue to sport embellished garments, but the square neckline with embroidery is what is moving out of the fashion cycle. Traditional clothing is always the exception, because it’s linked to a culture, I don’t think she’s referring to that. 😊

I have always hated the distressed (ripped) jeans! They look like what I wore as a teen when helping my dad with the yard work and that was the only time I wore them! I would have died of embarrassment had any of my classmates seen me in them!

I went shopping for jeans today as I’ve love about 30 pounds or so. Didn’t buy a thing! Couldn’t find any for us on the short end of the stick (I’m 5ft1/2”) - couldn’t find anything that didn’t look like it has been worn and torn! Couldn’t find anything for a slightly mature 75+ year old body! Won’t go to a mall as I prefer nit being shot!!!!! And I refuse to wear what some people call “old lady” clothes! I’ve worn jeans for around 60 years and will keep wearing them as I like to? All I saw weee clothing suited for someone about 50 years or so younger than or more than 6 inches taller than me! Pretty darn disgusted!!!!!

@@maryellenrioux2494 In South, Central and part of North America we suffered from spanish colonisation, so that's why many variants of european blouses are now adapted to our traditional clothes. That doesn't mean that here we haven't enchiched the variety of these pieces and their designs with our own iconography and styles, not to talk about of other native morphologies that didn't suffer much changes through colonisation... I have to point that there are other morphologies present in several garments in LATAM that have similarities with other clothes from the world.... so, no surprise with that.

In defense of my hoodie---well, I can't defend how it looks. But nothing beats it for the chilly pre-dawn dog walk, yard work in early spring or late autumn or adding a warm layer under a coat when the weather is brutally cold. Sometimes, fashion just has to take the back seat to comfort and praticality! I enjoy your videos!

Hi Marie Anne. I think short shorts look pretty unflattering on the whole and worse still, in my opinion, are cycling shorts.I much prefer a lovely pair of tailored Bermuda shorts. I agree totally with leggings and ripped jeans going out of fashion- I’m not a fan of any clothing that accentuates any unwanted bumps and lumps !

100% agreement, especially the cycling shorts. I am an avid cyclist, the bike saddle is the problem if one needs cycling shorts. Plus all that polyester promotes yeast and UTI infections. Those people all decked out in spandex are usually a$$h@£es

Hi Marieanne. I love this video. Just returned from 2 weeks in beautiful France. Our trip included 5 days in Paris. It was so easy to spot French women in both Paris and smaller towns. Lots of trench coats, scarves, simple but elegant clothes. Unfussy hair and minimal, yet flattering, makeup. And most, especially in Paris, wearing comfortable walking shoes. I love your channel.

For over 10 years I have worn leggings as they were meant to be worn-long tops or short dresses with boots or ballet flats. They will always work for me, even at my current age of 67. It is my go-to style in every season except summer. Happily, I don’t wear anything else on your list, as I am by nature not a trendy person.😊

Agree, but I always see so many people who should not be wearing them, and I believe that is who she is speaking to. People who wear them like pants and who don’t seem to realize they are only flattering if you are fairly slim in the legs.
I hope leggings stay around for a log time! They allow me to move without restriction, and don’t feel bulky…..which is why they are more preferable than jeans. Yes, they should be worn with a long top for coverage for most of us, but for those with beautiful, slim,fit figures, no tunic needed!
Oh my goodness, the “crop shrug cardigan”! I remember over 30 years ago an elderly aunt was knitting those for everyone, but NOT to wear as fashion. She made them to wear as either bed-jackets or for an extra layer of warmth on cold winter evenings spent reading or watching TV. She called them “Arms”, and mine was much appreciated during winter evenings in Minnesota.
Besides wearing a shrug in bed, I do prefer wearing one for just a bit of warmth on the shoulders in lieu of a shawl in the spring or fall when an evening event may be quite warm at the start, but then cool off rather quickly as night approaches. Shrugs can look more elegant depending on whether they are knitted from a finer or lace weight yarn or made from a light knit fabric.
I must get one for sitting up in bed reading . I like my room on the cold side for sleeping.

Marie-Anne you are so wise and I often hear your voice in my head when I am shopping or looking at outfits on the internet - especially: "if it's not a wow, it's a non!" (this has saved me so much money and closet space). Today I can add to that superb advice: "Good style is always in, but fashion comes and goes." Thank you - that's so true and gives us the freedom to say "Non" to unappealing/unflattering trends. Meanwhile I *wish* that leggings were out of fashion where I live. Today at the mall I estimate that 70% of women were in leggings-as-trousers. sigh. Oh well, to each their own I suppose.

Here in Australia, we call flip flops; thongs. And they will never go out of fashion because of the hot weather, and beachy lifestyle.
Also, I have a couple of embroidered square neck line tops from which I’ve received many compliments. It shows off my Eastern European roots, looks folky and endearing. It also makes me look approachable, warm and friendly, which I am. I won’t be discarding them any time soon.

Agree. I'm in Florida and flip flops will always be a thing here. They are classic and the thong sandals with a back-strap are also classic (Key West sandals). The push for women to replace their sandals with slip on shoes made like house shoes is annoying. They don't stay snug on my feet and are uncomfortable to wear.

I agree with everything you said Marianne. I only wear classic clothes. I don’t even wear jeans, only tailored trousers. I lived in jeans for 3 years at university, and have never worn them since,38 years and counting!,I also dislike baseball hats, racer back vest tops, tiered dresses, over the knee boots, very chunky shoes with platforms. I don’t follow trends, but wear the trends that I like, for example I love the wide elegant trousers that are in fashion at the moment. I so enjoy your channel.

Hoodies are one of my favorite choices when I go to walk (30+ miles a week) -- and run errands along the way. They keep my neck warm when it is cold. For summer, I have ones made of sunblocking material so my neck doesnt get sunburned. Stick a ball cap on to keep it back from my face, pop on a seasonal weight hoodie, and get some miles in. :-) I have also lived in apartments that were so cold that hoodies were the only way to get warm enough to sleep. Hoodies are so practical.

I was always anti-Crocs until I found that their line of slip resistant flats are exactly what I need working in the restaurant. They are waterproof and if they do get wet, they dry out with a quick wipe of a towel. Here in rainy South Florida, that is a must. But I only wear them to work and nowhere else!

Even when hoodies are worn "down", I like the drape of the fabric around my neck. I like the look and I like how it helps keep my neck warm. When it is cark and cold and dreary out and I wear my hoodie (only have one), I pretend to be a medieval monk, lol.

We are not in the day and age where we tell older women what they “should” wear. They should wear what makes them feel like themselves. “ older” women grew up in the 80’s and you’re not going to make them feel invisible or tell them how to dress. We love color and sexy and things that we can be expressive with. It’s a new dawn and I love it!

I’ve heard you complain about leggings before, but I’ve held on to a few pairs-and today you said that the way I’ve been wearing them is just right! Footless tights! I wear them under skirts. Much better than tights with feet because I get 2-3 wearings between washes-which I would never do with socks or hosiery with feet.

While I try to maintain my French-chic while living in Southern California, I own two item classes that practically every Southern Californian owns: hoodies, and embroidered peasant tops. I have to fit in !!
I wear various shades of jeans, and I particularly love faded jeans. I love pale blue denim. I have since I was a child and always will. I also love square necked blouses with or without embroidery. The square neckline is so flattering.
It's a good list. I don't think hoodies are associated with teen boys here, but they're comfort wear rather than fashion wear. Perfect for an autumn hike or a visit to the pumkin patch.
I'm glad that the leggings are going out of style as bottoms. I know people that wear them because it's easier than getting trousers that fit properly, unfortunately.
Unfortunately, for me, trousers and jeans are a very huge problem because I have sideways scoliosis with one higher hip and very skinny legs, so I am quite the exception, and have to wear leggings with flaref tunic tops or nice long shirts, and I opt for scarves also. To cover up my crooked hips and back.😢
I'm never going to let go of leggings. I don't wear them for every function, but they are always comfortable and forgiving and I love them for it. I also love crocs and flip flops. Like Rick Astley said "Never gonna give you up." No one is going to give up hoodies either. Sorry it seems you don't like American casual style, but these aren't going anywhere. They are standard. Frankly, I think my style is elegant, but I have always been and always will be BOHO. Its just more sophisticated now that I'm 49. I think style is more than an expression of right vs wrong. It is an expression of who I am.
I love leggins together with a skirt. And guess what - I'll keep wearing them 😊 whatever people say it is so comfortable.

As another Oregonian for Hoodies, please let me add this. Quality hoodies cost less than quality sweaters. The cost of cleaning is less. They last longer. They go Indoors/Outdoors seamlessly. The fit is generally more forgiving of bodies with lumps, rolls etc. They work with a wide variety of movements. Finally, Ive never seen a hoodie pill.!
They are practical but never chic. This channel is about French chic.

Love the dark green trousers! Maybe my suggestion has been covered in other videos, I HATE the "cold shoulder" look. I still see it on people and in a few catalogs. I bought ONE dress with cold shoulders about four years ago. I still love the dress but I put a cardigan over it!

Alot of these clothes anger me because they are not designed to compliment the average person. They are made and designed by people who know how easily it is to talk people into wearing certain clothes.(ethnic clothes excluded) through market hype and models who dont even smile as they wear them on the runway or in magazines. Using body language that seems to say like they are above it all. "In the know" and unattainable. It makes them and the clothes they wear desirable. Its phoney.
So the hardworking average person puts their trust in someone else to tell them what is "in" and socially acceptable instead of keeping to their own individual style and simply looking great in something that suits them and their bodies. There is no one more beautiful than someone who knows they look great.
Delighted to see all of these items going out of fashion. I must say, I do find myself moving back to a more classic look. Definitely stands the test of time, especially during these inflationary times. Thank you for your video!

Marie-Anne, thank you for mentioning the environmental impact of the bleached jeans. I will be happy to see them go, along with distressed denim. I have heard that the industrial process used to create highly distressed denim garments causes unsafe workplace conditions; for that reason I have avoided those garments. Being a native of Sweden residing in the USA we - I m not bragging - definitely have a built in sense of style. I’ve never worn distressed jeans or cropped sweaters. Black and white, jeans, layers, scarves…….yes indeed never goes out of style
I’ll never give up bleached jeans, flip flops, or leggings. Your other suggestions are right on. I would add colored hair, huge cheap jewelry, fluorescent colors, fake nails, over embellished buckles on shoes, and fake eye lashes.

I know that they do not look good on me, but though I have bigger thighs and bottom (which is why they don't look good and I know it) but I moved to them with tunic tops in 2019 (and loved them in the COVID isolation) since with a smaller waist I could not find pant/trousers/slacks that would fit. To get my butt and thighs into anything meant that the waist was far too big, and I could not find anything even to alter. BTW You do have lovely shoes, but people with what has been called wide peasant feet, especially with any "deformities" (bunions, arthritic toe joints) pointed toe boxes, and dainty shoes do not fit the foot - much like Cinderella's ugly step sisters trying to put on the glass slipper.

Excellent advice! I’ve always stuck to good quality, classic pieces and used accessories to keep in trend. It saves a lot of money as well. I do disagree with the leggings however. I think it depends on the person wearing them and I agree that they should never be worn as trousers. I have long, thin legs and always wear leggings with a tunic or long blazer or sweater/ cardigan and flats. There are other styles I would love to wear but just do not look good on me. You have to know what looks good on you. Also, I only wear good quality, heavier fabric leggings, which makes a huge difference. Leggings will show your flaws, not hide them.
But this is how leggings are supposed to be worn and they look fine this way. It’s just leggings as pants that is the problem.

I like a shrug over a skimpy tank or slip dress. Adds a bit of warmth and looks less bare. But not a bulkier sweater type, but a finer knit or lacey top that doesn't visually compete. I don't like wearing a wrap because I'm always fussing with it, it falls down, comes unwrapped, etc.

I have knit some of these to wear for yoga or stretching until I warm up. Gyms can be chilly early in the morning.
I have some knit boleros that I use to add sleeves to sleeveless tops on colder days. If I get hot flashes I can just take the shrug off.

I’m 67 and I wear classic jeans as well as ripped jeans. I love dressing the loose ripped jeans with heels and a cute top! Just depends on the occasion! :)
I am petite/ curvy, and find the cropped cardigan to be a godsend for flattering my height/build and making me look 'put together' during cooler months. As for leggings.....agree 100% that 99% of them are not worn properly, outside the gym, post leisurewear trend. I have two luxe brand/quality pair, one black, the other brown, which look like leather. Have found these to be incredibly versatile during the winter months as uber chic layering pieces with oversized or long sweaters....and never fail to garner MANY compliments whenever I wear them---casually with flat-heeled boots, or even with classic high pumps...I always feel chic, comfortable and (quietly) proud that I maintain a fitness regime whenever I put them on, since their cut flatters my waist, legs and bum. As for denim....TOTALLY agree how dark wash will forever remain the more elevated choice, for reasons which are obvious.... but still find the light wash version remains the most versatile during those sun-soaked SUMMER MONTHS. For me, the 'bane' of my fashion preference has ALWAYS been RIPPED JEANS. DESPISE THEM; always have, always will. Thankfully, they're more available sans rips these days, but not so long ago, they were a needle in the haystack!! Ripped jeans annoy me more than anything! LOL

@@shinnam Learned long ago which styles/cuts, colors, textures, etc. work best for my height and build--and stick with them...trends may come and go; but ones body type will always be the same...lol.... Am blessed with a tiny waist; helps to offset my round hips and short legs, so any style/cut which accentuates the waist OR extends all the way to ankle length especially for outerwear and heavier fabrics during winter.. will render the most flattering silhouette for me . That's just the way it is. lol

I agree with everything, except hoodies. Around here (Western Cananda) you need them. It's finally warming up a little for Spring, but the wind is still icy. I often wear a hoodie when walking my dogs on the off leash trails. Beautiful there, but open fields. My ears would freeze of otherwise. Walking on the beach at this time of the year needs a hoodie too. I dislike to wear beenies or toques. When it gets really cold I use my Alpaca scarf.
Great advice, Marie-Anne. Destresed jeans are mind-boggling for me. I see them mostly on young people but when I do see them on older women, I feel they are trying too hard to look young. Not very classy at all.

I agree with you 100% on style and especially glad to say goodbye to the distressed and faded look. I still love my hoodies though. They are too comfortable to part with. I have used the hood on rare occasion when I had to go outside in extreme cold wind. I also like to wear them around the house when my arms get cold, rather than put on a nice sweater. The hoodie can handle the frequent washes. TFS
The only item featured that I do have, and I must confess I will be keeping, is my hoodie! I only have one and I don’t wear it outside other than in my backyard or cottage. There’s nothing better for those chilly Canadian cottage evenings. 😊

Why the hood? Do you cover your head with it indoors. A sweatshirt style works, comes in terry, knit, and regular sweatshirt fabric. Cosy.
@@maryellenrioux2494 Yes, actually I do! That’s one of the reasons why I bought it last year. I have short hair and love the feeling of the soft inside of the hood against my head and neck. I love curling up in a big easy chair with my hood up and my hands, always cold, tucked inside the front pocket. Of course there are other things that can be worn to give a similar effect but why get rid of a perfectly useful article of clothing? It’s a gorgeous soft earthy green colour and really flattering for my skin tone and green eyes. I also bought it on a trip with one of my sons so there’s a lot of sentimental connection as well. To each their own I guess.

I myself am classic, but must say I was surprised to see no Birkies on the list! Years ago, one of my teachers told us our jeans with patches and holes were a mockery of the poor. That made quite an impression on me. I couldn't agree with you more about the uneven hemlines, though I've always suspected it's cheaper to sew that way as well.

Leggings have a place as underwear in cold weather, or perhaps in the gym, but not in place of trousers. I once had the misfortune to be on an escalator behind (and below) a woman wearing leggings which, she presumably had not realised, were see-through. I quickly discovered what underwear she had on (actually so tiny as to seem she was naked!), and spent the rest of the escalator trip trying desperately to look elsewhere - but it was almost hypnotic!

Love your videos! I will be so happy when camo, flipflops and crocs are gone! I am surprised you had the embroidered square neckline in there, as I thought that had been relegated to various ethnic costumes long ago. However, the leggings will be awful hard to get rid of. During lockdown, I wondered if I'd ever wear pants with a zipper again..I am skinny again at 73, but my shape is definitely different than the last time I weighed 120! Leggings and jeggings are just so much easier to wear than many items constructed for young folks. I wear jeggjngs that I buy a bit larger than I need, and my black and dark denim ones really look like pants. But, I could be fooling myself, too!
I like black leggings with different styles of tunics. Next winter I will be looking for a pair of brown velvet leggings and a few oversized cashmere sweaters.
I am pretty much like you, I can’t ditch the leggings because I cannot find jeans or pants that fit my hips and waist which are also crooked from scoliosis and that aren’t too wide for my skinny legs. I’m 71 so my shape is definitely different than when I was young I wear long loose tops tunics, shirts to disguise the spine and hips and to cover the leggings. Of course people like me are a special case.

Agree with all but 2 !! I love a square neckline (not necessarily embroidered though) and always get compliments when I wear them ! Plus I do love my leggings, but NEVER with a short top. I do tend to wear them more like footless tights, which is another look I really like. They seem to have been in fashion since about 1987 though, so it's about time they took a break !
I think skinny jeans are also going out. And I wish short length jumpers, cardigans and tops would take a hike as I am short in the body and long-legged, so prefer longer tops to balance me out !

Whew! Finally! Glad to see the end of all these things. I was starting to believe people forgot how to dress. I was always puzzled as to why anyone would wear flip flops instead of a sturdier sandal and crocs should be worn in the garden. Personally, khaki green has always been one of my favorites. I heartily agree with all of these fashion trends to ditch. There are so many other options for comfortable, chic clothing. Hoodies are worn here by so many teenagers. I think sometimes that teenagers hide in their hoodies, shading their faces, and it was worse when they had to wear masks at school, too. The world can be a frightening place for some teens, but hiding doesn't help. Mature women wearing hoodies are seen in too many places here on the west coast, rather than carrying an umbrella or wearing something more stylish with a hood. I could never see what anyone saw in crocs - they make the wearer look like Donald Duck!

I definitely agree with these and I wish I could get away from leggings, but as an amputee I don’t have many options bc most jeans or trousers don’t have enough stretch. I am starting to incorporate wide leg trousers 😊

I generally agree with everything on this list. I do have some flip flops ( for beach wear ONLY) and hoodies (on a chilly day when I’m working in my garden or cleaning the patio, etc.; they can get a bit of dirt on them and are easily washed). They are appropriate for those situations. And although khaki can look very sophisticated, with my skin tones I would never wear it or any shade of green with a brown undertone, as I’d look like something that’s been left in the fridge too long haha!
I agree with you about khaki! I was analyzed (seasonal color analysis) as a winter, so anything warm-toned is wrong for my skin's cool undertones; khaki is an autumn color!
I sold my cropped cardigans and camo shirts last year at a garage sale and have been swapping out my hoodies for cowl necks. Thank you for letting me know I'm on the right track.
Believe this would depend on where you live and your lifestyle. For trendy cities, yes. If you live in the heat of Florida we are not giving up our flip-flops. They are just well-made and stylish (not the plastic ones shown). Leggings will never go out of style for the fitness crowd. But love your videos!!!
Marianne is right. Even in Florida you will look classy wearing sandals. Flip flops are for the beach.
I have just purchased a pair of fairly light coloured jeans. I always tend to go for the darkwash but these suited me and my small frame. I never liked frayed or distressed jeans.

I see lots of ripped jeans and light jeans all over the US. I am not a fan of either. I can't ever imagine flip flops going out of style in the US. I love mine but usually only wear them around the house. I love the stripes you are wearing!

I love hoodies, always have, always will. Maybe it’s because most of my life I’ve sported really short hair like a pixie or a short bob. I think the hood balances the short hair well in terms of silhouette, but clashes with longer hair unless it’s put up in a high ponytail. The hood also gives off this “I’m protected, I am secure” vibe.
I totally agree, and I do my hair in a bun when wearing hoodies, I always wear my hair in buns BTW, since I find an adult woman - old woman to be honest - should not leave the house "en cheveux" ; this is a very old fashioned french opinion but I stick to it.
Butternut Squishy Hoodies do not give off an “I’m protected, I am secure” vibe.
They give off a sloppy, lazy vibe.
I feel the hoodie is cozier around the neck in cool weather as opposed to say, a crewneck sweater. Still, I don't wear one outside the home, a windy beach, or running to the grocery store. My hair would always be up too!

Such a fun video! I think we could add baseball caps (outside of the ballpark) to this list. I live by Portland ,Oregon so let me tell you about our hoodie culture: Here in the Pacific Northwest our teenagers live in hoodies bc they fit our nearly constant drizzle and overcast skies. The hoods are just right for pulling up over your head at the bus stop or when you don't want to be noticed walking down the hallway. They're such a part of our culture here that schools even have rules against wearing the hoods up in class. See, in our part of the world it doesn't rain as often as it sprinkles, so no one would DREAM of using an umbrella (how embarrassing!) and hoodies fill the niche. The odd thing is that our stores really don't sell many real raincoats. They sell nylon windbreakers and puffy jackets for hiking but very few nice trench coats. I found a good full length raincoat from Stutterheim online. People always ask where I got it! haha
So true-I grew up in PNW and lived in PDX for 10 years. Umbrellas, scarce on the ground. Hoodies and hiking wear, ubiquitous-even at the symphony!
lol, so true. I'm up north in Vancouver and a "true" Vancouverite proudly strides down the sidewalk with umbrella tightly closed in hand unless it's really bucketing down. Who wants to deal with a wet umbrella if they don't have to? 😂😂 Meanwhile, trenchcoats are rare as hens' teeth here too - I got mine from Simon's which is a retailer which originated in Quebec. Like you, everyone wants to know where I got it!

The falling off jeans have been out of style for over a decade. I can't get my grown boys to wear jeans that fit. They have never felt their "boys" restrained without having to wear an athletic cup.

I do have a beautiful hand knit shrug that my daughter made. I use it as I would use a shawl. It stays on if I move around as when holding babies, or dining. But I don’t wear it as part of an outfit. It’s for going into places I know will be cold. ❄️ Especially in summer here in the midwestern USA, people keep their air conditioners running at temperatures reminiscent of a refrigerator. I’ll be wearing lightweight summer clothing and walk into a restaurant and feel like I need my winter parka. We usually opt for outdoor seating.
