Before I was out to anyone and was a closeted transfemme majoring in film, I took a history of documentary class and obviously this film came up and I was like the only one who knew about it and certainly the one the most passionate about it. I’m sure that wasn’t suspicious in the slightest. Also Venus Xtravaganza will forever remain the blueprint. Her life, as tragically short as it was, has meant so much to so many.
This is great! My students will be watching "Paris is Burning" and reading Marlon Bailey's wonderful "Butch Queen's Up in Pumps" and this will be an excellent introduction for them
Thank you, Emily! After this I watched the documentary and everyone who hasn‘t yet should. It‘s incredibly beautiful and heartbreaking, sometimes at the same time.
I want to give so much thanks to you for covering such a foundational part of queer history! It's a bit embarrassing to say, but as a person from Gen Z and a conservative upbringing, I had no idea Paris is Burning was a documentary, despite being trans/nonbinary (I'd heard the name referenced in queer contexts but that's it). I'm very excited to watch it! Your commentary was excellent :-)
Bravo Emily!!! O-P-U-LE-N-C-E!!!! This essay is EVERYTHING!!!!! Before this my young gay self had to be satisfied with flashes of queer in Cabaret (my first experience of MLM as blasé), The Last Dragon's trans-woman was in a comedic role but not like in Bachelor Party, she was just partner of man getting beat up by the villain, and her famous line is "Not The Face!!!" wanting to keep her man beautiful. Fright Night's queer-coding. BUT I have to say I loved and still revere both La Cage aux Folles I & II. The high camp melodrama of it all, and their love for each other filled my young heart with joy! I've not seen it again in over 25 years, but still hold it in high regard, even if I wouldn't like it if it came out today. Keep doing what you're doing!!! Glad Nephew Foreign led me to you!
I would like to take people who espouse bigoted ideas and support bigoted policies, strap them into chairs, tape their eyes open, and make them watch videos like this. Since they presumably refuse to interact with the groups they hold these prejudices against, I want to force them to have SOME sort of exposure. I imagine that just watching a couple, becoming even a little more familiar with the reality of the situation, would erode that mindset a bit. Glad I watched this, because I learned a lot. 👍🏾
Incredible video! I desperately need to watch this film at some point if only for historical reasons but also because it appears to genuinely be a great film
Have you ever seen Better Than Chocolate? It's an interesting look at turn-of-the-millennium lesbian culture, with a trans lesbian character as part of the main ensemble. It's kind of "they a little confused, but they got the spirit" in terms of trans representation, because Judy's a very sympathetic character and the movie's politics are very much arguing in favor of trans women's inclusion in the lesbian community, but she's still played by a cis male actor.
I remenber watching this movie on Netflix after some crítical praised came to my atention. I found It a wounderful movie and a pretty impactful even on a cis straight Man as me - only can imagine How It ressonates on the queer comunity at time. Id got schocked that this controversy comes to table on another Netflix documentary about transness on media - Revelation ... Something like that (at least in portuguese). I think now I understand the why Of the criticisms but ... Do you know where we Can find the documentary "Paris Is Burning - the darkside/other side"? I really wanted to know what the people engaged has to say. About the criticisms on itself ... There's a condition on industry that says "intelectual property has one owner and f*** everyone else". Thats why no Mater How many diverse artistas worked for making Disney what It os ALL they receive is the paycheck for services ... Not Fair? Almost certainlly, but that How capitalism operantes... BUT IN THIS CASE ... I BELIEVE, FOR ALL THE POINTS YOU SUM, AN EXCEPTION MUST BE DONE. Give this people money is important, but give them a plataform to spread their voices and living is priceless. And is basically free to Take them to talk and share the ligjts. I believe in this case the approach must bê a bit like when you're dealing with originary people/natives/indigenous - give them money? Right. But not only that BUILD A RELATIOSHIP AND A BRIDGE. Work with marginalizrd group with so little income and so much risk associated MUST BE A COMITMENT, NOT OBLY "ANOTHER JOB" (wich definitivelly was the cadê with Madonna and Vogue - done the music, done something else and move on ... F*** for who started ALL this). Anyway - MARVELLOUS ESSAY AS ALWAYS ❤️💙❤️💙❤️💙
The balls were fucking everything. POSE was the most recent portrayal of that culture and it was fucking incredible. I grew up following that culture intensely.
Thanks for having me ♥️
i clicked on the new upload in your discord without reading your message and i was like "what ?? is this leadhead ??" took me a good 5 minutes 😭

I discovered your channel by Renegade Cut - I love this content! Subscribed, thanks for putting this together 😁✌
Did Roland Emmerich really have some white punk kid shout "GAY POWER" and start the Stonewall riots on his own? >_
This is a wonderful examination of a milestone documentary. Beautiful job, Emily!
