Thanks for posting HDrive7. I noticed on Wikipedia, it said the song was about a family recovering from a disaster at sea. I certainly pictured a small sea-port town with commercial boats and fishing when I first heard it (or a small port-town harboring a bad secret). I was under the impression that were was a finished version, and this was an early demo of it. I would love to have heard the finished version if it existed. It's a got a great atmosphere - a great mood, something I don't hear enough of in music these days. Music doesn't have to be overly complex to be atmospheric, and Phil was really good at that, especially in his earlier years.
It could have been a Peter Gabriel song... the voice... the piano sounds... the atmosphere... Also, we are not so far from "Can't Find My Way" from the same album... Don't you think?
A b-sides compilation, three dvd/bluray with the complete shows of "Live at Perkins Palace", "No ticket required" and "live and loose in Paris". And even one of the Both Sides Tour !!
I would like that these times could turn back..I was in Buenos Aires Argentina when both sides album was released.. those were brave wonderful times...
This is a nice gem. This sounds similar to something Bruce Springsteen would do. Phil could have gave this song to Bruce or sell it to him and Bruce could have easily turned it into something.
He should’ve keeps this part for the intro and they built it up and finished the lyrics and had another parts with drums and everything. If this song was completed, it might’ve been my favorite song on Both Sides. If you put this song and Survivors together it kind of works.
The voice clearly shows that it was in 1993, his voice sounded old in 1996. And it's the same Korg Synth used for the Both Sides sessions. The lyrics too show the sadness of 1993.
+RobLucci9779 Its a demo, so no official lyrics have ever been released, and there are some words that are hard to decipher. But just from listening to it, this is my best guess: "In the deep water town There were things that they never knew In the deep water town There were things that they never knew That they could find That they could find In the deep water town There were things that they never knew In the deep water town There were things that they don't know (?) In the deep water town There were things that they never knew In the deep water town They could believe in oh (?) In the deep water town There were things that they never knew In the deep water town There was life There was life In the deep water town Men's faces always look the same In the deep water town In the deep water town"
+HDrive7 the demo is glaringly unfinished, especially the lyrics, so the parts you can't understand are just phil mumbling because he doesn't have any lyrics. this is also why he repeats the same line so many times
I became a fan of Genesis when Phil took over as vocalist and his first Face Value is a masterpiece and his best works
Love this song remind my town so sad ❣️❣️❣️🇺🇸🇲🇽 perfectly said

My idol
A True great
Both sides could have had 20 hits.
This could have been a great song... it just needs to have another section on the end. This could have been the intro to a 7 min song.
