  • Mayakovsky - Frank O'Hara
    Now I am quietly waiting for
    the catastrophe of my personality
    to seem beautiful again,
    and interesting, and modern.
    The country is grey and
    brown and white in trees,
    snows and skies of laughter
    always diminishing, less funny
    not just darker, not just grey.
    It may be the coldest day of
    the year, what does he think of
    that? I mean, what do I? And if I do,
    perhaps I am myself again.

    I wish someone would pay Jon Hamm to read the entire Meditation in an Emergency and sell it like books on tape. Because anyone can read but few can read poetry.

      I know it's not O'Hara's work, but Hamm recently did the audiobook for Walt Whitman's "Life and Adventures of Jack Engel." Please check it out. Jon is great at reading. No affectation.

    Words! be
    sick as I am sick, swoon,
    roll back your eyes, a pool,
    and I’ll stare down
    at my wounded beauty
    which at best is only a talent
    for poetry.

    Aside from being an excellent series, it's also quite intelligent and literate. One of the things I absolutely loved about "Mad Men" were the various literary references peppered throughout; (Anyone remember Don reading "Portnoy's Complaint"? Brilliant!)

    • @skinner5605
      @skinner5605 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Also the historical references. The burning monk, the death of Marilyn Monroe, the assassinations of both JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald, and so many more. Just makes the show just that much more incredible.

    WOW. This is THE voice. Not in terms of pitch or tembre but substance. It's moody, pillowy, brooding. Perfect.
    I also like the poem. It has this "something". Uses common language and simple statements to create poetry that speaks directly of everyday experience in everyday language, poetry of urbane wit and elegance that contrasts with the pretentious works of Beatniks.

    • @user-sj3lf1uw9j
      @user-sj3lf1uw9j 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@user-sj3lf1uw9j Not really, they mostly produced crappy approximations of the literary project--the mythification of America--people like Melville, Whitman and Hart Crane had already executed much better long before them. And also, it's simply hard to take adult, college-educated men LARPing as teenaged vagrants under the guise of some shoddily conceived mishmash of "spirituality" seriously. I assure you it has little to do with rebelling against the "status quo": after all, Jack Kerouac was an admitted Republican and Ginsberg an apologist for pedophilia.
