      Triple CZ
      The main reason for the title is that I believe that eventually boards like this will be a direct challenge to the old faithful Pi.
      I've been a Pi fanboy since the very first one, but the allure of all that x86 software that the Up brings is appealing.

    Just checked the pricing for the UK: The RPi3 is £25 delivered, the UP is £114. This isn't even a remotely sane comparison.

      Right?
      Pi has always been aimed at programing and basic I/O controlling, and the $100 range SBCs aren't even aimed at accomplishing the same goals.

    Mick, found your channel by accident, but VERY glad I did! Your reviews are very in-depth, humorous & give the exact information needed, so thank you for taking the time, effort & expense to do so!
    I'm a former Network Engineer & although I owned both the RPi 1 & 2, I never really got into doing anything with them. Watching videos & such, I've become very interested & excited about trying this stuff out. I have zero electronic / circuit knowledge, so I'm literally starting from scratch. I just ordered an RPi 3 & thanks too this video the Up Board 4GB / 64GB starter kit. I also liked & subscribed to your channel. Thanks again for everything & take care!

      You've got to make your car setup modular so you can rip out the old SBC and plug in a new one easily. They don't last forever, and while it may be sufficient to get the job done, you will always crave the latest board that is just a bit faster and with more features. XD

    I'm glad there's competition in the RPi space. Competition is always a good thing. Plus, this thing being able to run Windows might give it a chance. Unfortunately the price pushes it out of competition with the Raspberry Pi. $40 is just about impulse-buy territory. $90 for the base model Up Board means you better have something in mind for it.
    Regardless, cool piece of kit and I hope the competition and innovation never stops.

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a nice SBC. The next generation is even better.

    • @zstick
      @zstick 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MickMake I hope as the company grows they can figure out a way to compete on price. Like I said, $35-40 is much easier to swallow than $90, especially for a piece of tech that will be considered non-essential for the majority of people buying it. Spec bumps will have a hard time justifying a jump in price that big, especially when the RPi 3 is so capable already.
      Still, though, glad to see competition. Competition is always a good thing in tech.

      +Modelmat since when has Dos and Windows 3.1 been compiled to run natively on ARM ? oh that's right it hasn't, thats why you need to run them under an x86 emulator. and then it will be slow as a slug.

    pretty good, although you have to remember guys, the pi has been in this race a LOT longer and is cheaper, the bugit limit is $35 per board, so x86 won't make it onto the pi, also arm seems to be fast enough for 90% of the things that i can do over remote desktop.

    EDIT: I'm editing my original post on this because I did it in haste. For the price of an intel cpu based motherboard capable of running full versions of standard operating systems, this is a great inexpensive tool for learning IT with. For simpler projects the PI is terrific but for a cheap solution to learning multiple server/pc configurations this takes the cake. On with my unnecessary original comments:
    3x the cost of a pi? i think i like the pi better. whats the use of that much power for that size unit based on programs and uses. 1.2ghz arm cpu with 1gb ram suits just fine. up's just an overkill with too many resources wasted. $36 gourmet pi for me. happy thanksgiving

    The benefits are outstanding although I note the price and lack of internal wifi and bluetooth (extra cost) and applicability as a full computer, like with it's own display and keyboard/mouse, which is more cost. There are different types of people. Hard-core computer types want more power to do more things. But even some of us like the feeling of elegant minimization. For example, a personal VPN on a $9 C.H.I.P. has more meaning than the same on a $35 RPI (ok,, you don't need the wifi RPI, so less) or $100 UPB, if it does the job. And look at how many maker projects are headless. I can't wait to see your take on the C.H.I.P.

    Interesting board but definitely way too expensive. For less than $70 I can buy DualBoot tablet with decent FullHD screen (including Win10 license). Of course there are no GPIOs pins available easy way. But for such applications it is easier to use simple and cheap Arduino or STM32 controlled via serial from any STB. For me personally the best performance/price STB is Orange Pi PC. It is fast, well equipped but cheap and now with quite good support from the community.

    • @alexatkin
      @alexatkin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much to add GPIO over USB though?
      When I looked it worked out more expensive. It also doesn't have the benefit of size and fitting standard Pi hats.
      Most tablets usually only have one USB port charging and OTG, so you can't have it run off mains AND use GPIO at the same time, that's a huge problem.
      I have an Asus T100 and would love to use it with GPIO in tablet mode, but I would have to hack a second USB port as its part of the keyboard dock.

    What did you mean with "once it gets corrupted you can't use it anymore"? You mean the flash storage on the board has no error correction/detection and is simply dead completely after corrupting?

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +EpicLPer
      I was referring to the fact that eMMC is a lot like SD flash. They don't last through a lot of writes and they weren't intended to be used for OS storage.
      Since eMMC is often soldered to the board once they have enough corruption they become useless in practice.
      But the good old UpBoard can boot off anything so it's not so much of an issue for that SBC.

  • @Shane-Singleton
    @Shane-Singleton 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'd actually rather it have an micro SD card slot. but it looks like a good piece of gear. And a good option for somebody that needs more than a Pi 3 can deliver. Hell I'm thinking about getting one of these for a retro game cabinet.

      If you can still run ARM - there is one other board that is well supported and about as fast as the UPboard but has the micro SD slot and one additional USB3 -- Hardkernel's ODROID-XU4; 2 GHz Cortex-A15 (60% faster per clock and 60% faster clocks = ~ 2.6x faster CPU than Pi 3), 2GB RAM. It costs $74 for board and PSU; add $27 for 16GB eMMC or just use a SD card.

    I think all these CC sized boards are missing the point of the Raspberry Pi, Low Cost and Low power. $30 vs $99, 2A vs 4A recommended power (2.5A for the Pi3 with WiFi and BT).
    Still a very interesting board nonetheless.

    • @CorpusOrganic
      @CorpusOrganic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see it from a little different angle. Though I agree.
      There are different boards that are all very well suited to certain projects. It isn't likely that only one of any of these will be needed. So buy the one that best suits the project and price point.

    • @MsSomeonenew
      @MsSomeonenew 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what you need, anyone looking for a backup PC should be looking at the more powerful versions.

    • @CorpusOrganic
      @CorpusOrganic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MsSomeonenew
      Not really. I wouldn't mind something more powerful then my pi 3 though. It can't play youtube videos very well. Not worth the money for a fully capable PC if it will spend most its time in storage.
      Last time I brought my pi out was when the power was out. I have a small battery backup for my PC. it was enough to keep my pi, modem, and monitor running. I think a regular computer might draw to much power. The monitor was drawing way to much as it was.
      I live off a fixed income (One months income for me is about a weeks income for most other people around here.) I can't really justify it. The cost to usefulness ratio of a fully capable backup PC isn't enough. This thing doesn't need to be fully able to run everything my current PC does. Just be able to access the internet so I can get the parts I need to replace. Being able to use it when the power is out or to edit/read documents is nice to.
      I could always use a public computer. Always remembering how my friend's e-mail accounts send me spam after they logged into a public computer around here. Public computers really aren't something to trust with account information around here.

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cheapest I can get an RPi3 in Oz is for AU$56. The UPboard would cost me AU$140.
      Yes it is more expensive, but as I said in my video: I'm looking at the bank-for-your-buck. The Intel CPU opens up a lot more software opportunities, and boards like these are competing directly with the Pi.
      At the end of the day it all depends on what you want to use it for, but the more we see boards like this, the more it will eat into the Raspberry pie.

      Not to throw them into the garbage disposer. My Pi's are doing a damn fine job 24/7 for a few years now. If you want to use them as mediacenter the newer version have way more power at the old proice point which is half of this "pi killer". If you can double the price where is the fucking limit?
      Are IBM Mainframes now considered pi killers because the have at least 10 intel xeon CPU's? Well they certainly have better software support then this thing here.

    This would be ideal to fit into the expansion bay of a Tandy 1000 HX, while being able to keep the original Tandy fully functional. The hardest part would be making the original keyboard work for both. The keyboard controller is on the Tandy's main board, with a ribbon cable between. That makes it easily accessible to connect to a switch matrix to USB HID keyboard adapter. The "How do I do this?" part would be switching the keyboard from one to the other.

    this cost us$99, I prefer a AMD 5350 a bit more expensive but more complete and powerfull machine, If i need a little pc i prefer the Raspberry pi 3 for us$35

    • @alexatkin
      @alexatkin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But the whole point is its physical size and things like GPIO, neither of which favours the 5350 as you are talking at LEAST ITX size.

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, I run AMD 5350 with 16 GB DDR, two SSDs on two 27+29" monitors and it simply run as absolutely quiet machine. Pi is the best for experimenting (I owe Pi1-3). And I dont see any advantage for this Up, for desktop its too less memory and power and the price is high. Maybe as the terminal, but simply pi cost 3* less... and if you wanna pay 100 USD you may buy normal PC a 5350 with same TDP and compute power in sky.

    • @alexatkin
      @alexatkin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jaromír Adámek I will repeat again, if you want the CPU power AND GPIO, there are NO alternatives in this price range.
      Even if you underclocked a 5350, you won't get its power consumption down as low as the ITX board itself will use a couple of watts. That's the whole point of these Atom SoC.

    This not only will not kill RPi, but will in fact fight to survive couple of generations. There is way to many boards now, and RPi is clear leader, first because of price and secondly, thanks to HUGE community support.
    This board sure can do stuff RPi was not meant to do, but at the same time is too close to modern day computer, which is just bit more expensive and comes with much more. (~150-200 bucks for laptop )
    UDOO X86 claims to be 10X more powerfull, but is at the same time 4-5 times more expensive....

    Nice video! I like the humor that you added to introduce the "Up" board!
    I like that the board comes with a heat sink. Many Pi users don't think it's needed, but if you do anything CPU intensive, the ARM chips on the Raspberry Pi just slow down. .. I run BOINC projects, so I'm hitting the CPU at 100% 24/7 and "slowing down" would be counterproductive!
    Maybe someday, someone will develop a graphics hat that will have a GPU with many cores that BOINC projects can access!
    I can see a big advantage of going Intel over ARM, as you discuss! This is an important point. This would make computing more portable between platforms: small device >> Notebook >> Desktop >> Server. (Fans of ARM might not like that!)
    Sounds like "Up" understands that "support" is critical to their adoption & success!

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate! I just can't help myself.
      As for the Up; this is one company that understands the full End2End cycle of product development. They also are listening to the market to size up what is needed.
      It is a shame that a non-RISC based CPU is coming up with the goods for ProMakers and this board really is for ProMakers.

    So what does anyone think about MAME cabinets? I'm planning on building one, and is this thing really that much better for MAME than a Pi 3? I thought that RetroOS or whatever it's called is supposed to be incredibly smooth on the Pi?

      I haven't run MAME for years, but I believe the Pi can run almost all games with the exceptions being the ones with a lot of emulated hardware and higher end graphics. EG: A lot of those boxing/fighting games that seemed to crop up in the late 80s. Sigh.
      A quick google and there seems to be retropie.org.uk/, www.recalbox.com/ and piplay.org/ now.
      RetroPie has a compatibility list: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IRSmFrSDvIc6gAw0gn12TcQ3HDOwmrETTor8wvvb7VI/edit#gid=1947139826
      And something from PiPlay forum: piplay.org/forum/discussion/300/list-of-mame-roms-that-work-with-pimame/p1
      Basically YMMV with MAME on Pi. I guess it comes down to: Try it on the Pi, if it doesn't work then you might have to get a faster SBC, or even a desktop.

      Yes, and this is something that I should have made clearer in my video. This does fill a need. It just depends on what your need is.

      +MickMake Of course, and to be frank, if I wanted a smoking fast mini computer, this would be it ... I may get one just to say I did - but I could use (and justify) three RPis to myself a lot easier for the price ;)
      Great video BTW! Must ... See ... More ...

      Thanks mate.
      I was a little delayed with this week's video as I was making sure audio balance was right. Once I get into the process of that I'll be faster.

    No normal USB 3.0, DC power jack rather than a USB one, and the price difference. If it was 2.4 amp standard mini usb + usb 3.0 full size and priced closer to 70 bucks for 2gb ram or more I'd be all for that. Definitely interesting... Hopefully version 2 hits a few more of my wants.

    loved the intro, short, sweet, and ended with a pun :) but aside from that, great explanation of the board. Makes me think twice about buying a raspberry pi!!

      Thanks for the great feedback.
      The Up is more expensive, so it really depends on why you want to use it for, but it's a great little board.

    Great video Mick. I'm just now learning about the UP board (thanks by the way!) and only recently purchased my first Raspberry Pi. The official website for the UP board mentions compatibility with all Windows 10 distros; is this limited to Win10 IoT, or actual, full distributions of Windows?
    If the latter is the case, this seems like it would be a great little PC for streaming games with Steam. I'm seeing all sorts of possibilities here.

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's essentially a desktop PC, but a whole lot smaller. So it'll run any major O/S out there, (barring graphics, sound and network drivers).
      I'm no gamer, so not sure if it'll be ideal for Steam.

    I agree with the others that almost the whole point of the Pi is its price. Not many will toss a $99 SBC to a 7 year old without worries that they'll lose or damage it. However, the UP board, if you are right about there being source available for everything, would make for the best OS development board I've ever come across. If you want to develop an OS that might eventually run on a broad range of hardware, going for x86-64 is a no-brainer. I've always wanted to develop a toy OS for an Intel system but everything I found always came up short in some regard. Either it wasn't 64-bit (64 bit is pretty much the end of the road. Why would you bother with 32 when you know you'll just have to upgrade it if it turns into anything serious?) or significant parts of the hardware were walled off or it didn't have UEFI or it was big, hot, noisy, expensive, power-hungry, etc. Just a simple 'everything is here, everything is at the current level of technology, if you write for this you're not guaranteed to have to scrap huge portions of it if you want to show it to someone else'. And yes, you could use a VM. But there will always be gaps. Plus, it is a million percent cooler to have your code twiddling the bits on real hardware.

      I believe there's always a hole to be filled somewhere.
      Will x86 boards challenge the Pi? Who knows? It was after all an open ended question.
      Intel, (with the Galileo series), is about the only company I can think of who realise what's required to challenge the Pi - Education and Community.
      All it requires is some of these companies to think that way and we'll see Pi priced x86 boards everywhere. Once that happens all we'll have is a bucket load more options. Excellent!

    My problem with this board is that in the nicest sense, it seems to have stolen most of the pi. Basically, same footprint, same pcb design: Gpui, usb, Ethernet, HDMI. It's main selling point is "better than the pi" which at its price is rather debatable as the pi isn't designed as a pc but as a board to do awesome stuff with. I honestly don't foresee people putting one of them in a Tupperware box and throwing it into the sea on a rope for some photos whereas they would and have with the cheaper pi. And oh goody, it has an intel core. Perfect for... Um.. Prototyping circuits? At a loss on that one if you're going for the same idea as the pi. Did I mention the "cheap" price?

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer to the "killer" title question lies in how the SBC fulfills your project requirements. For me, (and some others), it's a killer.
      I can use 2 of these to replace a 4 Pi cluster. Then I can use the Pis for other projects I've planned.
      If you are looking at the price per performance of the Up vs Pi, then check this benchmark out: openbenchmarking.org/result/1608052-HA-1608034HA54
      However, if you are looking at the big picture, then it's not a Pi killer, because they haven't entered the education market. *This* is where the Pi has it's roots, and nothing will shake it unless they also enter the education market.
      Anyway... Ultimately, there's no need to do this. The Maker just ends up with more options, and choice is good!

    The 60 frames per second on GLXGears was because of v-sync (I think). Disable it to get the real FPS.

    Hello
    Do you have benchmarks for Cad software like Archicad, Autodesk, Sketchup...? Do you think it would work fair enough with 2D/3D editing software (basic skills)

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't, but it'd be fairly speedy. You could compare some of the graphics benchmarks with other boards, though.
