In one of the live streams about the playtest, they said that they knew that spaceship combat was the most contentious part of Starfinder. So they are planning on not having just one system for it, but three that you can choose from with varying levels of crunch. Including one that they called "naritive style." They also said that these are the only classes in the core rulebook. However, they are going to be starting a regular playtest for new classes like they do with Pathfinder. And that the two classes being playtested next year for the next book will be the Techomancer and the Mechanic. They didn't say what the theme of that book will be. But I think we can figure it out
PF2E Playtest Brag: It was released after the playtest that 2% of groups survived the Worldwound stress-test, and I was in one of those groups ;) We got *really* lucky with two Banishment spells and the Druid took advantage of an error in the writeup up for Dinosaur Form where the Pterodactyl's attack was listed as "unarmed", meaning that Handwraps could be applied to them. And this was when Striking *multiplied* weapon damage rather than just adding one die per rank, so they were chucking like 12 dice on a regular hit xP
According to Paizo they are working to improve ship combat and will be releasing it when it’s “ready”. You play PF2e without ship combat so you could play test SF2e I guess
The starfinder playtest is for me. That's it. Video over (Edit: I'm really hyped for how starfinder plays out because I'm a big fan of spelljammer and the idea of scifi ttrpgs)
@Althaven_ I'm currently running a spelljammer 5e game from module set in my setting with my friends. Spelljammer's flavor Is a problem due to my tastes in flavor and worldbuilding. That's why I'm so excited for starfinder
They have said starship combat is coming in the next playtest before the book is finalized. It's not being stripped from the core rules, just not in the initial playtest. They're probably going to release it in the second playtest with the Mechanic and Technomancer classes which will be early next year I believe.
Pathfinder 2E's 3 Action Economy is great, but I'm afraid I'm going to be a '1st Edition Grognard'. I don't play that much anymore, and I have barely got my 'money's worth' out of the 1E content I've purchased, so I don't see jumping to a new system just yet (felt the same way about Pathfinder 1E vs 2E). I can understand them leaving alone the Starship Combat rules, though. That's the one system that was VERY broken with the release of the Core Rulbook, and had to be 'errata-ed' heavily in reprints, and still fans didn't like it (although I found a fan re-write that makes it MUCH better). I do feel that a Sci-Fi game like this needs some kind of ship combat, though, although maybe not as detailed as it was in 1st Edition (save that for a 'splat book' for players who like the strategy of Starship Combat, and don't mind complex rules).
Space combat has been a tough thing to nail down since the inception of TTRPGS being set in space. From Traveller to Space Opera no one system has gotten it right without breaking into Starfleet Battles and other tactical table simulators.
Starship and vehicle combat and chase rules were a major part of the original Starfinder's appeal. Stripping them out of 2E would be a mistake. However, the actual "starship combat" rules drew mixed reactions. I wouldn't be surprised if they cut that out and just kept vehicle and starship chase rules, something a bit more stripped down.
I don't think they'll completely strip Ship combat out of the game. I will say they will probably strip it out of the base rules. Looking at the game manual in your hands, you have to add base Pathfinder rules into that mass as well. It'll be a baseline for what you need to run adventures into either Pathfinder or Starfinder. I can see the next book in the Starfinder 2e series being about ship combat as well as a host of ships to purchase/build as well as rules to build your own.
the rulebook requires the pathfinder books only because it's a playtest. Later playtests will include ship combat when it's ready, and the finished product won't rely on pathfinder resources
My big issue with the playtest is that there's currently no "tech guy" class; I'm actually really shocked there's no engineer-type role to play off the bat. The science fiction engineer "I can fix anything with paperclips and hammers" Miles O'Brien type is such a fundamental core fantasy for science fiction. You can scratch that itch a little bit with some of the other classes (operative and envoy particularly), but nothing that really capitalizes on that core fantasy of "I'm the tech guy" and that strikes me as a big miss. I hope that gets corrected before the 2nd Ed. gets launched. I think it would be a tremendous shame for Starfinder to launch without one.
not run it yet but have a few games set for dragon con they have said there will be ship rules but they were not ready for the playtest book there genon stuff talked about it
We know that the Mechanic and Technomancer classes will be getting a playtest next year, if I had to guess the starship stuff might be alongside that, and might go into a big tech themed book as the next rulebook after Core
I want to start starfinder. I've never played pathfinder, and my background is 3ed d&d 100 years ago. My question is, should I play 1st or wait for the new 2nd ed starfinder?

HELL YEAH! I am happy we will be seeing you in the stars one day!

(Oh, and three-action system FTW baby! Both a great innovation in the space AND an excellent action system. Makes life so much easier.)
YES!!!!
lol nope

It's for me. I've been a PF2e GM for a while now, but I may well switch mainly over to SF2e once it comes out. I love it.

I would be REALLY surprised if they cut it out. I think it is going to be its own playtest.
Definitely want to see y'all do an SF2e actual play.

oh that is an interesting thought! a release of it's own outside of the core rules.

I see Sam...Thumbs Up!
Cosmic Birthday PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE with Sam as a Barathu!!
Starship combat will be a separate playtest
Some of these designs are very alien, gotta wonder about how they interact with other species

If you want space without ship combat, play spell jammer

I didn't even recognize Sam in the thumbnail
Apparently if you are already subscribed the button does not glow when you say that. :(
BOO! but now we know
